Exchange Place Eye Associates

I have to say that I’m delighted that Exchange Place Eye Associates opened so close to my apartment. It’s a small office, but they have a good selection of frames, and my experience with both doctors Chen (I believe that now only Dr. Mamie Chen practices here) was excellent. I am also impressed by the low-​key office environment and the wonderful receptionist, who is competent and knowledgeable. They don’t try to sell you anything — and even wrote out my prescriptions to give to me (I’ve found that obtaining them from other optometrists is like pulling teeth, because they want you to buy frames at their business). Both Dr. Chen and Nina explained procedures and choices in a fair and informative way. I recommend the office highly,

Dr. Mamie Chen is terrific, and so is the receptionist (alas, I’ve forgotten her name). They are prompt and friendly, and Dr. Chen is very thorough and happy to answer questions (no matter how many you have) without rushing you. She doesn’t try to push products — she just tells you the benefits and downsides of the different options and really lets you decide without pressure. I was very happy to find this office a year ago for updating my rigid gas permeable contact lenses (an area of expertise that isn’t so common as it once was), and was back last week for another exam and to update my eyeglasses. This is the best eye doctor/​exam experience I’ve had so far, and I’ve been wearing glasses/​contacts for 25 years.

I have been wearing glasses/​contacts for more than 20 years, so I’ve seen my fair share of eye doctors. This has to be one of my best experiences yet.
As with most people, I dread going to most doctors. Sadly, in order to get new contacts, I have to go every year. After looking through Unilocal reviews, and seeing that this place accepts VSO eye insurance, I decided to give it a shot. Upon arriving, I checked in at the front desk. Since I had conveniently filled out all the paperwork online before my appointment, I just had to quickly sign off on it. The woman at the front desk explained all of my insurance benefits, which was awesome! Nobody ever does that, and insurance is always so confusing, so it was great to have her lay out exactly what would be covered. I also usually go as cheap as possible for eye exams but with insurance, the appointment didn’t cost me a dime. I had arrived about 10 minutes early, and there were other people in the office, so I thought I would have to wait forever (like always). But to my surprise, Dr. Chen took me right away! She was quick, efficient, and thorough, which I appreciate, but didn’t make me feel like she was rushing me out or pressed for time.
While I normally always advocate for buying glasses or contacts online, for obvious price benefits, with the benefits from my insurance, it was actually cheaper to order my contacts through the office. So I did! Once again, the woman at the front desk quickly told me the price with my insurance discount, and didn’t make me feel pressure to order through them (which I absolutely HATE).
Overall, awesome experience! Very professional but personable.

Both Dr. Jason Chen and Mamie Chen were very professional and helpful. They demonstrated a strong knowledge of their field, as they answered my many questions thoroughly and clearly. Checkup felt very comprehensive and the service was excellent. I did not feel rushed at all. Neither did they pressure me to purchase any frames or lenses in-​store (of which they have an extensive collection).

Dr Chen was great. Friendly and attentive, I’m so happy to have found an eye doctor in my community!
He explained everything to me thoroughly which was nice. I hate feeling rushed at doctor’s offices. I also ended up getting my eyeglasses there and I did not feel any pressure from his assistant when making my purchase.

Very pleased with our first visit to Exchange Place Eye Associates. The office is small but comfortable, and the small staff is pleasant. The exam was the most thorough eye exam I’ve had, and Dr. Chen was very patient, friendly and professional. We also purchased eye glasses, and the office made it very easy (and affordable) through our insurance. Glad we found this place for eye exams and glasses.
