Specialties
A vinyl treasure trove just minutes from Manhattan, Iris Records aims to satisfy the most ardent and idiosyncratic of record collectors. Iris stocks used full-length vinyl of all genres, including punk, psych and classic rock, 60s-70s-80s soul, all types of jazz, hip-hop tracks, country ballads, easy listening, a fantastic array of 12 inch disco and house (from IrisDance), along with oddities like ukelele records, spoken word LPs, military marches, crazy album covers, a growing pop vocals section, endless 45s (rare and not-so-rare), along with thousands of dollar records of all types. Iris also stocks the latest in current release indie rock like Bön Iver and Grizzly Bear along with great reissues from Weather Report, The Beatles, and A Tribe Called Quest. We also feature a listening station for checking out LPs before purchase, a literate and interesting customer base to mingle with, and a classic DJ booth that has guest DJs most weekends. We provide a full tilt vinyl experience!
History
Established in 1996.
Iris Records began as a extremely underground store when vinyl was solely the medium of DJs/hiphop producers and CDs were king. I mean, who cared about a record store? Vinyl was so «old-fashioned.» We were open just one day a week (Friday) and was home to a crazy bunch of vinyl junkies: Chill and Dirty and Gil and Speed, just to name a few. In those days, the store was quite disorganized with crates piled everywhere. You never knew what you would find!
As Jersey City changed through the years, Iris Records has morphed into a different animal, but with the same sharp record-hunting teeth. A store that looks to please everyone (not easy to do in a small shop), Iris prides itself in maintaining very strong usedsoul, jazz and rock sections, along with specialty stock in British rock and all types of reggae. We also enjoy offering a select smattering of great new release vinyl, ranging from the best indie rock to classic re-issues from labels all over the country and world. Check us out!
Meet the Business Owner
Stephen G.
Business Owner
A sometimes flea market dealer/scrounger and former rogue stockbroker, Stephen counts most musical genres among his favorites, but especially Britpop, hillbilly music, The Ramones (yes, they are a genre), filmstrip records too. Favorite individual artists include The Mekons, Saint Etienne, the Pet Shop Boys, Gram Parsons, Otis Redding, John Phillips, Scott Walker, Patti Smith and Fairport Convention (just a sampling). He stands in awe of his store and business, shocked that it has lasted through all the crazy changes in the music industry. Who knows what is next?
