I love Mavericks!!! We found it by accident when we were looking for a cool place to enjoy a late lunch, and it was marvelous. On our second visit, the owner Greg greeted us, and he is great! He treated us like family from the first meeting, and it has always been a treat to return. The tacos are remarkable, the margaritas are superbly intoxicating :-), and the atmosphere is «salty» and fun. Woohoo! This truly is as good as it gets!

This place was delicious! We came here visiting from California and it was legit Cali mex. fresh and so flavorful. The chips and salsa were amazing, as well as the chicken tacos and the skinny margs. Wish we had a Mavericks close by, we would be regulars! I have never left a Unilocal review but really wanted people to know how special this place is!

Decided to eat here due the the high ratings. Came on a Friday evening, but were seated immediately. Place was busy, but not super busy with a wait. Server greeted us immediately and brought out the staple of chips and salsa. We order the queso for appetizer, which was just melted cheese with no spice. The kids were hungry, so we decided to order their meals first. My son wanted the cheese quesadilla and my daughter wanted a soft taco with beans. When we placed the order, the waitress informed us that the restaurant policy is no substitutions ATALL. All she wanted was a taco with no chicken or beef, just beans. Because of this policy, my daughter decided to have a cheese quesadilla. When it came time to order our meal, we placed our order with the notion of no substitutions. My wife ordered her meal, but she didn’t want the sour cream on the taco. Well, at any other restaurant, that would be fine, but the waitress told her that she couldn’t request no sour cream, because no modification are allowed. Well, in my many years of eating at restaurants, this was a first. We told the waitress, what if the person is allergic to sour cream, would you not allow to modify? She said she would talk to her manager and after a few minutes came back and said«my manager said we can do it this one time, but we are not allowed any modifications» Wow, I’m so glad the manager did this HUGEFAVOR for us in leaving the sour cream off. I really don’t know what we would have done if they couldn’t leave it off(sense my sarcasm here). Unfortunately, this experience turned us off and don’t think we’ll be visiting again.

Worst place ever… if you are open until 9:30, then server people until 9:30…want be back. Told us at 9:15 on a Friday they were closed… give you less than 24 months to stay open with that type of customer service. Your bartender needs to be replaced too… poor attitude

How did I not know about this place? Oh right. I have a 2.5-year-old and a 15-month-old and we never go out to dinner anymore. That is until tonight. Husband and I ventured out on the spur of the moment this evening with the kids in tow to brave dinner with toddlers and no grandparents to back us up on defense. Would we survive? Would we get dirty looks from management and other patrons? The answer to the first question was yes. And, blessedly, the answer to the second question was no. We arrived for an earlier dinner and were warmly greeted by what I presume was the manager/owner. He complimented our family and shared with us a picture on the door of his own family, his son-in-law being the chef and also the owner of another award-winning restaurant that I now want to try. Maybe he could see the«we don’t get out to restaurants often with the kids; please forgive us» look of anxiety in our eyes, but he immediately put me at ease and set up a booster seat and high chair at our table. Our entire meal was enjoyable(thank you, children!) as we ordered and were served relatively quickly. The menu wasn’t overwhelming, but it had a great variety of flavors to choose from. I l-o-v-e-d my fried chicken tacos. The chow-chow/relish on top was sweet but had enough kick to break a small sweat. My husband and I each traded one taco, so I also sampled his steak tacos. Also amazing. It would be a difficult choice in the future between the two. I also got to sample my kids’ cheese quesadillas because the 2.5-year-old filled up on chips while the 15-month-old ate better than he has in weeks while taking in every detail of the restaurant. One fantastic observation I made was that the rice on the side with the«grown up» meals has all the fancy fixins of the cilantro lime with queso fresco, while the kids’ meals come with just plain old white rice. Thank you for that, Mavericks. You have been trained in the ways of the toddler, I see. Definitely putting this one on my «safe for an early dinner with kids» list.

I’m late writing a review, and almost didn’t, because everything I want to say has already been said. But here’s my two cents. Our family of four went this past Thursday night and were warmly greeted by the owners(husband and wife duo). They proudly showed us a family photo posted just inside the entrance and paid close attention to my kids. It was a huge contrast to the typical lukewarm/disinterested greeting that happens in many restaurants and I, quite frankly, loved it. Our waitress told us that Thursdays are Ladies Night with half-priced drinks, so I ordered the Paloma margarita, a delicious grapefruit drink that tasted fresh and light. My husband had a beer. My kids ordered off their kids menu, and both enjoyed their enchiladas. I ordered the steak tacos — three tacos served with a cup of beans and a cup of white rice topped with crumbled queso fresco. The tacos were good, but the steak was a bit chewy. My husband ordered the hit of the night — fried chicken tacos with chow chow. The description was so strange and frankly unappealing that he almost missed out on the best, most creative taco we have had in years. Trust me, try it! It’s an awesome blend of crispy friend chicken, a white sauce, and a sweet/spiced/acidic chow chow and it’s like nothing you’ve ever tried. So good! We were doing some serious taco trading at our table, since his dish was the clear winner. Our experience was awesome. The owners and staff are warm and welcoming and make the dining experience so inviting. I have a few very minor critiques, but this experience was still 5 stars for me: 1. My drink came without a garnish. Since I love fresh grapefruit, our waitress quickly brought me a slice. But it’s always a bummer when every other drink at every other table is picture perfect and yours isn’t — c’mon, you know you’re looking at the other guests’ orders. Also, my husband got his beer well after his meal was served. 2. The steak in my tacos was chewy. That’s all the negative I have — not much! The bottom line is that we will certainly be back very soon for the great people, fresh cocktails, and those fried chicken tacos!

I went here a while back, but all I can remember is the EXTREMELYSMALLPROTEINS. The wait took forever at least 30 minutes for the food. I ordered the fajitas; first of all, it was small, it was mediocre and tasted very American to me. My Brother ordered some kind of popcorn soup. I was outraged, the amount of soup in there was unbelievablely small. The only reason I’m giving this place 2 stars is because the salsa and churros were okay. Don’t come here, it well disappoint you.

Ok Mexican food, great service, with a high price tag. I guess it has something to do with it’s location being Johns Creek. $ 8 for a Margherita, $ 13 for 3 fish tacos are a bit expensive. We also ordered the Braised Brisket Enchilada, and it looks like a stack of tortillas with layers of beef, cheese, and sauce on top, almost looks like TacoBell Mexican Pizza. For $ 13 I want the chef work hard by rolling and baking the enchila, not a lazy stack of tortillas. The fish taco is so so. It maybe my palate towards the corn tortilla. I found them coarse and flaky. There is no sauce on the fish taco so they tasted blant too.

Great food, great service, and of course, fabulous hand-made margaritas! I’m not a big fan of Mexican food, but I’m a huge fan of Maverick’s! It’s tucked away in the northwest corner of Johns Creek Walk – away from the street noise. Indoor and outdoor seating makes it perfect for dinner for two, ladies’ night out, or any occasion! Don’t miss it!

I absolutely LOVED the food. In fact, the steak taco was probably the best steak taco that I’ve ever had in my life. The atomosphere is very beachy and chill and the music that was playing while we ate was fun(Beach Boys, and other beach bands from the 50s/60s). My boys each ordered the cheese quesadillas and to my delight, ate all of their food(this never happens). The chips and gringo dip were really yummy and you get a lot of queso with the order. My husband had the briskett enchaladas and he really enjoyed them and raved about the rice. Because I can’t eat cilantro, I had the steak tacos minus the pico(they happily added diced tomatoes for me) and minus cilantro. I asked if there was cilantro on anything else and was told the rice had cilantro on it, so I was able to get just white rice without the extras. Our food was fabulous, the environment was exceptional, and the service was outstanding. This is not like any other Mexican place in the area and if you’re looking for something fantastic, look no further than Mavericks!!!

Awesome first experience at Mavericks! My boyfriend and I noticed this restaurant when we were getting brunch at Another Broken Egg Café. I love a horse named Maverick, so we had to come check this place out. We were greeted by a man named Greg, who I believe is the owner, he was very friendly and welcoming. He brought us over to our table and said whatever we don’t like, let him know. The décor inside is very hip rustic, I love it. My boyfriend and I both ordered the California styled munchies tacos which came with a side of rice and black beans. Very delicious. Our server was very sweet and fast. I will definitely be back to try the wild grouper tacos.

You absolutely have to try the grouper tacos. They are spicy, juicy and work well with a wedge of lime. You also get a nice side or rice and black beans. Top this off with flesh tortillas with medium spicy salsa and you have a great evening upon you. The environment is warm and has a California canteen beach look. The owner is very gracious and inviting. Give this place a try an enjoy the warm southern hospitality.

We’ve been to Mavericks Cantina about 4 times now. Mavericks has a cozy yet cool neighborhood eatery feel. Super cute and clean restaurant tucked away in a small shopping strip. Love the cool interior inside especially the neat branch light fixture they have at the long high top table. They also have a nice and pretty spacious patio our front. Wonder if they are dog friendly? The service has always been great especially from the individuals at the hostess stand near the entrance. I always feel like I’m being warmly welcomed into their home. Love Tuesday Taco nights! All tacos on the menu are just $ 3 and they load them up with all yumminess just like they would on any other day. I also like their guacamole which they load up in the serving container. It’s always been fresh along with their homemade chips. Very light and crispy chips which o prefer over the heavier tortilla chips at some other places. They also have a cool and quick payment option off the iPad’s that the servers have. This helps for quick check closings at the end of your meal, and it’s also environmental friendly. Go green! Go Mavericks!

Now, this place is a refreshing and much needed addition to the restaurants avaiable in Johns Creek. Do you have a sophisticated food palette? Are you over the chain burritos and overdone tex-mex places? Do you have an appreciation for a creative collaboration of flavors and textures? If so, welcome to the world of fabulous food flavors complimented by a laid back, fresh very Southern California atmosphere of Mavericks! My husband and I stumbled on this awesomeness and it’s our new favorite place. The chef has really put some thought into these amazing recipes and created some truly unique combinations. If you like some meat, lettuce, rice and beans thrown into a taco, this is NOT the place for you. Each menu item is thought out and really should not be altered from its original form. Though the combinations offered may throw you off on paper, trust that there will be a full on party in your mouth when you are eating here. We would come back for the salsa alone! Ask for what the special tacos are. My husband had one that was Chorizo and I had the fried okra… both are amazing. The last time we went, he had the brisket and I had the fried chicken tacos. Neither of us were disappointed. To top it all off… I am in love with their hot sauce. Forget Siracha! This is some flavorful kick in a bottle. I practically begged the owner to let me buy a bottle to take it home. Then… At the end of our meal, my wish came true! Woohoo! This girl is happy :) it’s the little things in life people! I am seriously grateful for this restaurant. It’s about time that all the good chefs are not only found ITP! This is a OTP dream come true! I would highly encourage trying this restaurant. Thank you Mavericks!

I came here on a weekend afternoon for a quick bite. When I entered, I waited several minutes before someone actually greeted me so I just decided to eat at the bar. Luckily, the bartender was helpful and brought me chips and salsa before I even ordered. She answered all my questions about tacos and specialties on their menu. They also had a deal where you could download the Stealz app and get a free queso so be sure to check that out! They don’t allow you to mix and match tacos which is a bummer but you can order individual tacos on Tuesdays. Eventually, I decided to go with the fried chicken tacos that came with white bbq sauces and chow-chow. My food came out in a few minutes and the tacos tasted great. They were served with rice and black beans on the side as well. The sides were just ok, didn’t have too much flavor. The cost of my meal was $ 12 so a little more than other comparable spots for about the same food quality. The queso was decent too but pretty standard. This place seemed average to me as for price and quality. Would definitely like to come back on a Tuesday to try different types of tacos though!

Honestly, I’m not quite sure how I feel about Mavericks Cantina just yet. It’s not quite Mexican, Southwestern, or Tex-Mex. I may have been ready to sign off on calling it «contemporary Californian», but where does«Fried Chicken Tacos with Alabama white BBQ sauce and chow-chow» fit into that? The constant playing of The Beach Boys, surfer music, and other 50’s-60’s tunes had me looking around for a vintage jukebox, milkshakes served in metal cups, and curly fries(of course, none of which was to be found here). So, contemporary but nostalgic. Californian, but Mexican and Southern. Very enigmatic indeed. We were served the standard complementary chips and salsa. The salsa was certainly fresh and flavorful — clearly made in-house. We ordered the Mavericks Guacamole, which was also very fresh, but overpriced considering the small portion size. We also ordered the Fried Chicken Tacos with Alabama white BBQ sauce and chow-chow and the Dos Equis Braised Brisket Tacos with salsa verde, pickled red onions and lime crema. Yum. Both varieties of tacos were tasty, but I am curious to know whether or not the tortillas, chow-chow, and white BBQ sauce were made in-house or were supplied from elsewhere(not an accusation, but perhaps a suspicion). The tacos and black beans and rice sides tasted like a combination of pre-prepared foods jazzed up with some in-house prep… kinda like what happens in an average suburban home kitchen. I could be wrong in this suspicion, but that’s what it tasted like. Though I have no doubt that the residents of Johns Creek will benefit from having Mavericks Cantina as a viable lunch option, I’ll be scratching my head about this place for awhile.
