June Mountain

When the snow is good here, it is one of my favorite resorts in the world. Why? You look around – powder and more staff than people around. A clean canvas. Lay fresh tracks. Use your imagination.

We came here during president’s day weekend because we got a 50% off deal ($ 45 each) and Mammoth Mountain was at $ 125. Such a deal, we were SO glad we went! Even though we were staying right by Eagle Lodge in Mammoth, the drive to June Mountain was no longer than 20 minutes and it’s really pretty much just the mountain over. Even on the most packed
snowboarding weekend of the year the runs were WIDE OPEN and just as long as mammoth. My only complaint was the initial lift from the parking lot to the main lodge is suuuper slow and
with everyone getting there at the same time the line took quite a while. Other than that, there were no lines anywhere else so it was up and down the mountain all day long. I really like the
last run that you can take down that hugs the outside of the mountain. You get a good view of
June lake and it winds down in zig zags even though it looks like it goes straight down initially. It’s the alternative to taking the lifts back down. That run can be quite narrow at some parts so do be careful! Anyway, I loved June mountain. It’s a great price and the workers are really friendly. Oh and kids 12 and under are FREE! It really IS California’s family mountain

Though we live in mammoth lakes, June mountain is our favorite spot. Living up to their reputation as the «family mountain,» kids under 12 ride for free! Also, ski and snowboarding school rates are much more affordable. Got a friend in town who has never rode on snow before? Bring them here. Lessons are about $ 80 for a 3 hour session (10a-​1p). Then hit the slopes and have entire runs to yourself.
It’s a bit of an upside down mountain. J1 is first lift up and the steepest with mostly black diamond runs to get back down. The chair takes about 12 minutes to ride one way. You can download on this lift at the end of your riding day if you like. Don’t forget to look behind you for a view of mono lake and the eastern Sierra mountains on any lift you ride. It’s just magical here.

A great family trip!
Arrived on a Friday morning and had no problem getting up on the slopes with 3 young kids! The staff was amazing and always eager to assist when needed. The kids didn’t like the helmets we brought so we rented helmets at the château for only $ 7 per day and the staff made everything so effortless. The slopes were kept up each night so every morning it was like fresh powder. I definetely recommend June mountain to families wanting to avoid the crowds at Mammoth (and it’s a quick 6 hours from San Diego).

This was my first snowboarding class and I just felt love with it.
Getting rentals was real quick even though it was MLK weekend. Dropped my daughter in ski school and found my place in snowboarding class.
The instructor was very helpful, friendly and focused.
Even though some of the students were very slow, the instructor was always encouraging them.
He never get pissed off from similar questions many times. When in trail, he was always with the slowest runner [which was ME :)].
June mountain has very nice beginner trails. Silverado is the longest (2miles) but well maintained slow slopes. After completing once, I felt confident and rest of the runs were fun.
I heard my daughter later, she also liked it there.

No lines at the lifts on a Saturday? Woo hoo! If you want to get your runs in on a weekend, then come to June Mountain, especially during this El Niño season. The only lines I encountered were in the ticket area and cafeteria. The kids got to meet Bucky the mascot, decorate their helmets, and drink free hot cocoa. The whole family had fun!

This resort is excellent for family with kids. They are very family friendly and the prices are very reasonable for lift tickets.

In fact, it sucks so bad, it’s awesome.
Big Sky, Montana made waves when they unveiled Yellowstone Club — a vast subdivision of gentleman’s ranches surrounding a private golf course and a PRIVATE SKI AREA. It is a magical place. It is a place with tremendous views, 1500 acres of private powder, and a direct trail connection to 5,400 more acres of Big Sky powder… which is already empty as it is! There is just one little problem: if you aren’t lucky enough to be a guest of a member, your ski pass is a whopping $ 36k a year. Better work on getting adopted by Daddy Warbucks.
But here’s a secret… you don’t need to pay 36k a year for private powder on 1500 acres of mountain with runs for skiers of every age, ability, and temperament. You don’t need to hop three planes and drive an hour to get there either. In fact, you need only drive 20 minutes north of Mammoth. And there it lies: June Mountain. 1500 empty acres of powder that lasts for weeks, where fresh tracks can be had days after a snowstorm. And with its special brand of views and vibe and weather, it’s hard to imagine that it could possibly be yours and yours alone.
June Mountain consists of a network of four «peaks,» each with their own character. The «Face» fronting the parking lot and ticketing office provides steeps and canyons, while «The Wall» provides an intermediate terrain park and beginner runs. «Rainbow Summit» serves as graduation day — long beginner and extensive intermediate runs slip off its hilltop, and «June Mountain Summit» provides advanced blues and lengthy advanced runs. The mountain is the ultimate resort for progression — the runs are graduated in difficulty, with the transition from beginner to intermediate to advanced occurring with wonderful ease. And the fact that you will practically be the only person on a run at any one time makes it easy to concentrate on technique without fear of getting mowed down by a runaway board. My girlfriend, who hadn’t skied since 7^th grade, found herself slipping down even the most difficult intermediate runs by the end of her first day at June (we were there December 28 by the way — a VERY busy weekend at Mammoth). By the end of two days (plus a day at Mammoth), she was a pro. She credits June’s wide open runs, nonexistent crowd, and gladed setting and views as being the relaxing necessity she required to face her fears and relearn the sport. She’s now plotting further adventures and skis of her own. Something I never thought would happen. (Tip: If you have a significant other who has a deep fear of sliding on snow, bring them here. It just might convert them).
As far as base facilities, June is funky. A ticket office and lounge at the base welcomes guests, who must then board J1 for a 12 minute (And very steep) 1,100 foot ascent to the true base lodge — June Mountain Chalet, located at mid mountain. Unlike Mammoth’s base lodges, June’s mid-​mountain chalet provides a one-​stop shopping deal for rentals, lockers, sport shop, food, and bar. It’s all right there. Rentals are quick and efficient — we were done in 5 minutes. Lockers are cheap (50 cents a day). And upstairs, a gorgeous rock, wood-​burning fireplace and dining room with floor to ceiling windows brings the majestic «Swiss Alps of the Sierra» indoors. The chalet practically hangs over the edge of the Face, and I challenge you to find a more spectacular lunch view in California, or anywhere else for that matter. Food is classic burgers and dogs and sandwiches and salads, with daily specials ranging from Fish-​n-​Chips to burritos. As with all Mammoth Resorts, a heavy premium comes attached with on-​mountain dining. Luckily, the food is very good. For what it is. In all, the place is a bit old, and can stand for a refub, but it’s all quite comfortable.
The mountain also offers day care, ski school for all levels, free naturalist tours, a mascot that roams the mountains and leads gladed tree skiing adventures… the place has it all.
The only flaw is if you are not the most advanced skier in the world and capable of skiing the Face (or if there is no snow on the Face), you have to down-​load on J1 back to the parking lot, which provides tremendous views of the valley, but requires you carrying you gear in your hands and disembarking with a quick side-​step… which is a challenge when your feet are encased in plastic blocks.
But this flaw is easily overlooked by June’s nigh-​perfection in every other area. This is a resort that, unlike Tahoe, Colorado, or Mammoth, is AMONG the mountains. You feel like you are skiing into a forever dreamscape of craggy peaks and free leaping waterfalls. And this is a resort where you can truly make fresh tracks — on powder days the powder is yours and yours alone. And at $ 72 for an adult ticket, the resort offers a tremendous value. If you ever wondered what having your own, private resort is like, this is it. Complete and utter perfection.
Too bad it sux.

This was my first time trying snowboarding, heck this was my first time ever being in snow period!
I took an all day lesson for $ 140 that included rentals. Our instructor Brian was super friendly and very patient with us. He was an awesome instructor. The lesson started at 10am so get there a bit early so they can size you up for your equipment. It’s a 5 hour lesson with a lunch break.
After a couple of hours I was able to go up to the slopes. Brian took care of us and assisted us every time we fell. Which was a lot!
The next day we were comfortable enough to go try different slopes alone. The all day lesson really helped and now I feel I can snowboard alone, still falling on my ass of course!

Great resort for families with young ones. The ski instructors are top notch and the rates on lifts and rentals are terrific. The views from the café are picturesque.

I’ve been skiing here since 1998 and have had a pleasant experience every single time. Now that I have a 4 yr. old and an 8yr old, both on the slopes now, this place makes it even more enjoyable. Slow paced & family oriented, it makes for a great weekend up from L.A.
Tree skiing is unprecedented here. The lack of crowds is unprecedented here…

Are the kindest employees of June mountain I dropped my credit card key and $ 20 bill and Abigail emailed me that night he told me she’ll she found it and she’ll keep it for me in the morning Theninstructors we are amazing they helped my son ski and I say he was able to go down the bunny hills by himself afterwards with the help of the instructors. Therein no need to go to mammoth when u have a family friendly place (sister mountain) like June
if you lost your wallet with all the money in it in a place like this they would return it The bar was fun and the food was fantastic
i enjoyed deer bowl trail and the j7 lift chair, I could rave on and on just go there and it will be like heaven on earth with fresh powder and angels for employees !!!

June mountain is a way fun .ski destination. in an exquisite setting and great back country access if you you want go Off Piste… Mammoth is fabulous too but just to crowded on the weekends especially. Skied most of the resorts in Ca. and if you want the least crowded experience and super fun moderates you want June. Friendly staff too… the views from the main lodge dining are completely off the charts as well…

I guess I did t post a review on our last trip to June, but I remember it was our best trip there! As always, the lift operators are SO friendly and always extremely helpful with my littles.
We live far, but I am really hoping we will be able to renew our passes there for next winter!
I bought a few things in the sport shop and the same gentleman helped us just as he’s done previously. He’s always helpful and really friendly.
The staff is really nice no matter where you go. The runs were well groomed and perfect for us! Great coverage, even though it was a drought year.

June Mountain seems to get better and better. Though this trip the snow was a little thin, it snowed 2″ for the second day.
June is as close as it gets to having your own private ski mountain.
I’ll never go to Mammoth again on a holiday weekend.

To add to the family friendly nature, they have wagons that they bring to your car to help haul your kids gear. This is really nice if you have a few kids.
Every staff member I encountered was friendly and professional. It’s just a nicer more intimate place than Mammoth.
June Lake is one of the prettiest places in California. It might be hard to believe but it’s prettier than Mammoth

Love love LOVE June Mountain. All the awesome snow that Mammoth has, but NONE of the crowds! Friendly staff, open runs, and while it’s much smaller than Mammoth, it’s bigger than our SoCal resorts (though, now they’re all part of the same family), reasonable, and super fun. There’s good tree runs, some fun terrain, and beautiful views from all over the park. The couple of seasons we were fortunate enough to do the $ 99 college pass were so unbelievably worth it — we made so many awesome memories!!! :)

Gorgeous location. I loved being surrounded by the mountains. Many lakes nearby to walk to or hike to. A few store to stock up on supplies and even a restaurant and bar.
The place is beautiful.
Many types of rentals to enjoy here. From homes, A frame homes, and hotels. A few campground locations too.
