I have been going to a local barbershop that specialized in fast cuts geared to military clients. They were fast, sometimes less than 20 minutes but I was never really satisfied with the cut. After having my hair styled in Japan last November I realized that I didn’t have to settle for a fast barbershop cut. When I returned to Hawaii I began my look for a good salon in earnest. Looking on Unilocal I found the perfect salon and stylist.
The overall experience was very pleasant. The salon had a very comfortable atmosphere, and they even asked if I wanted something to drink while I waited for my stylist. The stylist Earl was very pleasant he showed me that my natural part wasn’t where I was actually parting my hair for years. Earl then proceeded to cut exactly the amount that I wanted using my natural part. I was so pleased and impressed with Earl and Fringe that I decided to make my next appointment before I left. I finally found a good salon and stylist and looking forward to being a regular customer. No more cheap and fast haircuts for me.

My regular stylist was booked so I searched Unilocal for a salon on WW side to do partial low lights. Found Fringe and was able to get an appt w Kanaia. Salon is clean and nice. Parking meter st parking. Kanaia Really cute friendly young woman. She listened to what I wanted and gave suggestions which I appreciated.
2 hours later, my hair was not changing color. She seemed perplexed, asked me what my regular stylist was using on my hair… something about ammonia or MDX MMA or something. I frequently change salons as I’m impulsive w my hair… I’ve never been asked what products r used on my hair. She’s the pro, I thought, I go to a salon to get my hair done, I sit, make conversation and let the stylist do their thing. Finally she asked for advise from a more experienced stylist. Kanaia wanted to start over! I thought NO WAY am I staying another two hours! She said no charge. Duh.
Booked another appt for week after. When I arrived she was w another customer and made me wait 25 min! I was very irritated but waited. 1 ½ hours later using a darker color, my hair came out just like I wanted. So, in the end I’m happy but I would suggest waiting a few more yrs for Kanaia to get more experience.

Right before we had to leave Oahu for a wedding my husband announced his impending need for a haircut. I was wary about being able to find an appointment in the four hours prior to our departure on a Friday afternoon, but we finally found Fringe and were able to get an appointment in 30 minutes from calling.
We had some challenges finding the place, but once we realized it was inside the building and not visible from the street, we were golden. My husband’s stylist was friendly, thorough, and very talented. She gave him the hair cut that he usually asks for, a modified Navy cut, but with a contemporary twist that was both flattering and quite chic. Price was $ 35, but included the neck shave and they used prestige products, so I thought that was worth it.
I hope my husband returns here, because with ease of appointment availability and attention to detail, with the good price, I think Fringe is going to be our go-​to salon for his hair. Who knows, maybe I will even give them a try with my locks that I guard so jealously…

Kanai’a cut my hair and it was a good haircut but not what I asked for. I also was rushed out and didn’t notice the back was not how I wanted it until I got home. I did however have a great shampoo by someone else while Kanai’a finished up with her client.
I contemplated going back to Kanai’a but opted to drive out to my former regular stylist on the Westside and will continue to do so for future cuts/​colors.

I was very nervous while looking for someone to cut my little girl’s hair, as she had very long hair and wanted to go drastically short. I’m so happy With the work kanaia was able to accomplish. We showed her a picture and she went to it. My daughter loves her hair!

After moving to Kailua a few months ago I was so nervous finding a new hair stylist. Not only did I find a hairstylist but I found the best! Kanai’a at Fringe salon is AMAZING. I have seen her twice now and both times I have had the best haircuts I’ve ever had. Being someone in the beauty industry myself that says a lot about Kanai’a. I would and will recommend her to everyone. The salon itself was wonderful as well. Five stars for the whole package.

I’m a townie and I drive to Kailua for Lisa at Fringe.
The salon is average sized and you kinda have to look for it when you come in the building.
Parking is pretty easy. Street or parking garage.
Lisa is amazing and mega professional. She has a huge heart and makes you feel welcome.
Cuts, colors and more. Trust her with my blonde for life.

Having kids, they became the priority and I was resolved to get the mall haircuts. My last kid graduated and I thought I should treat myself after 15 years of hair neglect. I called several places recommended on Unilocal and I was finally able to get an appt. at Fringe. LOVED it! Hi’ilani was awesome… She knew my hair type (Hawaiian mother) I wanted to look fresh not trying to recapture my youth. She made recommendations on hair highlights which I have never had. Definitely recommend this place! Everyone here is so friendly: Kanai’a, Jodi and Linda!

I went on a Sunday afternoon. Parking was easy and free! I didn’t have to wait at all.
Jodi was very patient with me since I didn’t know what kind of cut I wanted. The shampoo was my favorite part… it was so relaxing that I wanted to fall asleep! Talk about an awesome scalp massage!
I will definitely return to Jodi!!!

Got great service from Elaine. She took the time to teach me how to style my hair. One thing I know is that you could have a great cut, but if you don’t know how to style it — it won’t look good.

This place rocks. I’m new to town so I decided to try my luck with at Fringe, and man am I glad that I did. Jared (aka Texas) is fantastic and really knows what he’s doing. I didn’t know what to expect when I walked in, but Jared was very concerned about fully understanding what kind of style I was looking for. I told him as long as I can put it in a bun, do whatever you think will look good. I had very light highlights when I came in, and he helped me pick out a great color that better suited my complexion.
He also gave me a great haircut that had a lot of volume and took away the bulk. I love it! He truly seems to care about his customers and their comfort – when my meter ran out of quarters, he even went out to refresh the meter for me (I would have gotten some looks going out there with all the foil on my head…). I found the staff to be very professional and the salon was very clean and nice. I am so pleased with my experience and I would highly recommend Jared to anyone looking for a more fresh look and a pleasant experience!
Oh, and I got a piece of chocolate pecan pie ;)

I came into Fringe for the first time today to treat myself to a shampoo, blow dry, and light styling before a friend’s wedding. Texas took wonderful care of me, and I loved the waves he gave my hair! It took about an hour for shampoo, scalp and shoulder massage, blow dry and styling. I need to pamper myself more often! Definitely planning to come back next time I’m in town to see my family.

I found Fringe through a Google search after moving to Kailua and looking for Paul Mitchell products. I was set up with Texas and he was great! His personality rocks and let me tell you prepare for the best head massage during shampoo, I didn’t want to get out of the chair. Been back three times (once for an updo with a glass of champagne!) and left satisfied every time. I will always book with Texas for future treatments. Thanks friend!

So it turns out living on the fringe is a good thing. To be honest, my appointment started out a pretty rough because I arrived on time while my stylist did not (she came in about five minutes later smelling strongly of cigarette smoke). By way of greeting me, she walked up behind me and started running her hands through my hair and asking what I wanted done. A proper greeting before the consultation would have been a lot more professional!
Thankfully, Jen did a good job of salvaging things. She did a nice job with my haircut and color, and she maintained a friendly conversation throughout. (I can’t stand it when stylists, nail techs and other people working on you say absolutely NOTHING throughout your appointment, it seems really uncomfortable to me.)
Other than the fumbled initial greeting, my only other big complaint is that there is no on-​site parking and street parking (metered) is difficult to find. I ended up parking a couple of blocks away in a paid lot so I was a bit worried about needing to leave mid-​session to feed the meter. Thankfully, Jen was fairly quick with the hair appointment so I got done just in the nick of time.
Fringe is located on the first floor of the Kailua Medical Arts Building – the one with A Cup of Tea facing the street. Go through the main entrance and make an immediate left.

This review is for Earl’s hair highlighting services at Fringe in Kailua.
My hair was dyed brown and I wanted to go back to blonde and booked Earl for highlights. I’d had him cut my hair before, but never highlight.
He did my highlights, but after shampooing and blow-​drying, it turned out that I was not blonde at all but still brown. So he had to RE-​DO my highlights ALL OVER again. I had to wait for him to finish a hair cut on another customer, and just sat there with nothing to drink and no offer of a magazine or anything.
Then, he re-​did my highlights a second time. After a shampoo and the start of blow-​drying, it turned out that he had died my hair ORANGE instead of blonde. So, on went the third coat of hair dye to my hair. This time, he had to put on a toner to try to get the orange out.
I took a THIRD trip to the back sink to get my hair washed. Then he began to blow dry it and my hair looks so weird now. It is not what I wanted AT ALL. It still has a strange orange hue to it. I was nearly in tears.
I don’t know how hard it is to to simple blonde highlights, but for Earl is was absolutely impossible. I was in that hell hole from 1:30 — 6:30!!! I could not wait to get out of there as soon as possible, even though I hated my hair. Now I’m out $ 175 and will still probably have to go pay that again to another salon just to fix my hair.
I HATE MY HAIR. DO NOT GO TO EARL AT FRINGE FOR HIGHLIGHTS!!!

I had a groupon here that was between $ 25 or $ 35…can’t remember exactly, which included a wash, cut and blow-​dry. I had to reschedule my appointment a few times and they were very helpful with my schedule and the times I wanted to book. After you book an appointment, they send you a text to ask if you want to get appointment reminders. If you select yes, the reminders are sent 1 – 2 days before your appointment.
I had an early 9:30 appointment so there was only one other person getting their hair done. I loved that I was greeted by all the workers there when I walked through the door. I was offered something to drink when I sat down. I liked that my stylist asked twice how many inches to cut off and where I wanted my layers to start. It’s a good reassuring feeling when they double check… I’ve been to other salons where I could tell they definitely didn’t listen to my request. The wash was very relaxing and so was the head massage. I noticed that in chain salons, like The Hair Cuttery, that I’ve never had a head massage or a thorough shampoo like these places do for you.
The cut went very well and my stylist put in a leave-​in oil treatment that made my hair feel super soft and silky. She styled my hair really nice. I probably won’t be able to style it the same way since it looked that good, but maybe I can someday if I become rich and famous and have my own hair team to do it for me. Then again, that still means I wouldn’t be doing it myself! My ends were really split so I knew I needed around 1 – 1.5 inches cut off, but I needed to keep the length of it. It looked shorter than I wanted it to, but my boyfriend said he didn’t notice the length difference, and just assumed I styled it. (men! lol!) But it really isn’t that much shorter than what I wanted, now that it is straightened.
The salon was clean and the stations were kept neat. The employees had a very positive attitude and you can tell they care about their customers. The only drawbacks are that for women, prices start at around $ 45, which I think includes wash and dry besides the cut. That may be pricey for a lot of people but as the saying goes, «you get what you pay for». I’m glad I had the Groupon though since it saved me some money and I was able to test out if I liked this salon or not – which I ended up liking very much. The last thing that I didn’t like, which I know the salon can’t control, is that its inside the Medical & Arts building, so there isn’t any windows or natural light to see outside while you get your hair done. But hey, you’re only in there for an hour average, so no big deal.
Despite what the low raters like Dawn B. say, I have had multiple «real haircuts» and this place gives real haircuts, thus the reason for the excellent rate.

Had a great experience here with Eloisa! She gave me one of the best haircuts I’ve ever had. She listened to what I wanted and advised on products without being pushy.
The neck and scalp massage was an unexpected treat. Her attention to detail was remarkable — for instance, she had this particular technique of removing the aromatherapy towel from my face so it lifts gently off in a circle with no brushing. Sounds odd to mention it specifically but my point is she took her time to make it a great experience. And I’ve never been happier with my hair!

I was pleased with Eva, she cut both of my son’s hair. They had a special going on as well, buy one service, and get the second half off. I had no idea, so that was a nice treat!
Eva was very good with kids, and she was FAST. She listened to what I wanted, and she made sure to check in with me to see if I was satisfied with the cuts. Overall, a really good experience. I ended up paying less than I would have at Pigtails and Crewcuts, or even Supercuts, at a cute little salon.
The only thing I didn’t like was that there is barely any seating for waiting, and the easiest parking was street parking (if you could find any on Uluniu.)

Although my boyfriend loves getting his hair cut here by Ashley the salon itself isn’t designed to accommodate those who are waiting. It has no additional seating besides a small adomin which after 5mins begins to get uncomfortable. So don’t plan on coming to early because if someone else does to, ull be left to wait standing. When I go to a salon I like to feel relaxed even if I’m just waiting for someone. I didn’t feel that way here. I did see a nice blow out tho. But other than that I can’t comment to much on the work they do.
