KKFI FM – 90.1 Community Radio

This community radio has the BEST music! And shows dedicated to women and rockabilly. Blues, classic rock, great voices and a good vibe for honesty and fairness. What a wonderful way to stay in touch with a good crowd and all you need is a radio.

I am writing this review about KKFI FM (Kansas City, MO) because i appreciate shows like Tom Klammer’s Tell Somebody. I appreciate his service to the community through interviewing provocative guests. His variety of public interest programming brings a level of thoughtful, relevant information and conversation to the airwaves at a time when our mainstream media is simply failing to do that.
I am a documentary filmmaker and really appreciates a show like Tell Somebody that challenges my thinking. Thank you for providing this program to the public!

KKFI is the kind of organization and hosts the kind of music and programs I dig, and the kind that most commercial ventures would never dream of hosting. So kudos to KKFI for keeping this all together. I’m sure it’s not easy and any time you have an organization using a lot of volunteer and low-​paying employees it makes it all the more challenging.
In all fairness, the reason for my review was that a band I play in volunteered our services for a fund-​raising auction. We played on the air, bids came in and the money will go to the station and we’ll do the work. But it’s just one more testament to the strong feelings I have about true community radio.
Long live KKFI, and if you haven’t given them a listen, you’re missing it!

I am listening to one of my favorite shows on KKFI as I write this review. It’s the Tasty Brew. The host plays Americana, Bluegrass, etc… from 6am-​8am. There are a lot of artists played on this show I wouldn’t normally hear on other stations.
Now that I’m thinking about it I listen pretty much every day to all the shows. One of my favorite non-​music show is the «Anything Goes» show on Friday at noon. Everyone on the show gets me through my lunchtime with laughs. Then there’s the Rockabilly Mood Swing show on at 5pm on Friday. This show jump starts my weekend. I also listen on Saturday morning to the Blues Kitchen. Again, I have heard a lot of artists I normally wouldn’t on other stations.
If you can, go to their website and check out all the different shows they have. I bet you will find one or two or more that will interest you. Plus you’re supporting a great community station!

What’s the difference between public and community radio? Practically everything. They may sound synonymous, but for many reasons community radio stations like KKFI-​FM 90.1 are the true voice of their city. The shows on KKFI, most of which are presented by local volunteers, cover grassroots issues, under-​represented populations and niche music styles that are usually overlooked by mainstream media.
Want to know more about the health of local workers’ unions? Heartland Labor Forum explores labor-​related issues each week. Heard about a local soldier who returned from duty and became an anti-​war activist? There’s a good chance he’ll be interviewed on the public affairs show Tell Somebody. Down because you never hear blues on the radio? Soothe your soul with some help from Blue’s Kitchen, Mother’s Mix or one of eight other shows devoted to the blues.
If variety is the spice of life, commercial radio is the epitome of bland. So if you’re tired of the listening to the same old thing, tune into KKFI. The issues you learn about and music you hear will make you a more informed citizen, and heaven knows our community needs more of those.
