This hospital is a joke! They wouldn’t let me go back with my fiancée while he got stitches and they are slow and such idiots!!!

As much as I absolutely hate hospitals, Research Medical and their specialists have literally saved my grandma’s life in a few serious moments.
The hospital is older and they have quite a few departments dedicated to various issues including (but not limited to…): kidney issues, cardiovascular, burn unit, outpatient, cancer center, maternity, ICU, ER, etc.
They move extremely quick when they need to, by bringing my grandmother down to an emergency right renal stint procedure because her right kidney was over 95% blocked. And they move at a more leisurely pace by not being overbearing while my grandma does her physical therapy slow as molasses, haha!
Does it smell like a hospital? Yes. Does the food suck? Yes. Do they have crappy coffee? Yes. But they have taken great care of my loved one and I appreciate that immensely!

My grandmother was admitted here after breaking her ankle and arm. They put her on a floor that focuses on treating severe burns and gun shot wounds — who knows why. The ortho doctor assigned to her was an incompetent boob. Between the inept doctor and the physical therapist she saw, neither could properly fit her into the compression walking boot that they slapped on her leg. She laid in bed unable to move her leg because the boot wasn’t on correctly. Similarly, they put her broken arm in a sling incorrectly. Several family members mentioned the fact that she was uncomfortable and unable to move. The poor nurses couldn’t do anything to help because the crappy doctor was unresponsive when they called him. Finally, two days later, the nurse was able to find a PRN physical therapist who actually gave a crap and was able to put the boot on correctly. Just like magic, Grandma’s condition improved dramatically once the boot was secured correctly. She was comfortable and could get herself into and out of bed. Someone (hospital staff) pointed out to the doctor that the boot was not on correctly, and every interaction our family had with him after that was terrible. The guy was a grade-​A jerk. Thank God she was released to a rehab center so she isn’t stuck with this incompetent, non-​caring doctor anymore! F that guy! The nurses and the PRN OT that saw Grandma were nice to deal with and the facility was ok, but I’ve only got one star for this p.o.s. doctor. I’ve only got one finger for that S.O.B. too, you can guess which one.

My mom had spinal surgery here. Her neurosurgeon, Dr. Basta is fannnnn-​tactic. If anyone is having a brain or spinal surgery I would recommend him or anyone here. All of the nurses are very friendly. Amazingly compassionate staff. I can’t thank everyone enough! The cafeteria isn’t too bad, it’s what you’d expect. Research gets tons of brownie points for communication for the patient’s family. There is a screen that updates telling what stage of the surgery is going on, such as «Procedure Start», «Procedure end», «Anesthesia end», etc. A nurse also came around and gave us personal updates periodically. The staff is fabulous, I would let these surgeons operate on anyone I know! Great, great!

I’m sitting here with a friend who is dying of cancer. She is peaceful and not in any pain. The nursing staff are EXCELLENT. They know the sound my friend likes. What shows she watched while she could still talk and have kept us informed of every step in the process of hospice.
Highly recommend to anyone when the time comes.

In the burn ward. I must admit the place seemed sketchy at first. But after my surgery I have had a good group of nurses.

My Mom is here in the cardio department. The staff is very professional, caring and eager to service. I have no complaints at all, heck even the cleaning crew are a joy to be around! Thanks Research Medical Center for taking good care of my Mother Dearest!

This is a hospital located in one if the least desirable locations in KC. Despite that fact, they have a good group of physicians and are nationally recognized in different areas. It does seem as though there is always construction going on. Parking has never been a problem. The clergy on staff of different faiths are very helpful and can help you prepare documents about what should be done if you are unable to make decisions for yourself.

My husband had to have Spinal Surgery here. If I have my choice of hospitals ever again this will be the place. The entire staff has been fantastic. I have never been to a hospital where the entire staff has ever been so compassionate and caring. From the housekeeping staff all the way to the CEO. Yes, the CEO… She held the elevator for us and was so kind and caring and friendly… I can’t think of one negative word to say about this entire place… KUDOS to everyone!!!

I have felt ill for a good chunk of 2013. If it wasn’t one thing it was another. I missed a lot of work, and began annoying everyone I know including myself. Being the doctor hating fool I am I spent all of this time on my couch sick, and unhappy without ever seeking care. Then I was sitting at my desk when a pain so awful hit me that I was not sure if I wanted to continue living. I had these pains for the past 2 – 3 years, but they always went away within an hour to hour and a half. This pain lasted nearly 24 hours. No sleep. No relief. No eating. Just pain. My mother who is also very anti doctor suggested I go to the emergency room so I knew it was time to go. Research Medical had the best reviews for hospitals closest to me so I decided to go there. The ER staff were very friendly, and attentive. I waited zero minutes to be seen by someone and they seemed genuinely concerned about my health. Previous ER visits I always left feeling like the doctor couldn’t wait to get me out, and that they didn’t believe my illness was real. Not the case with Research Medical. I ended up being hospitalized and having surgery. I feel like I had a really good view of how this hospital is. Seeing as I spent 3 days there, interacted with the ER, and interacted with the surgeons (Dr. Floyd Scott).

Attentive and empathetic without being too cheesy

Cons for ER–
My bed was broken and I kept getting ran into walls by every poor attending that took me to and from x-​ray, ultrasound, and to my hospital room
Pros for my Hospitalization–
Every nurse was sweet and helpful
Every room is private and they allow you to have one person to stay
Cons for Hospitalization–
The food was god awful, and when I said I can’t have dairy they still sent my yogurt and mashed potatoes (which have dairy).
Pros for Surgeon–
Such a nice guy. Explained every aspect of my surgery and even drew me a picture
anesthesiologist listened to my concerns about being put under and followed all my requests
Nurses on surgery floor did an excellent job keeping my boyfriend and best friend up to date and making sure my family out of town were up to date.
Cons–
None
This hospital is a little dated in regards to how it appears, but not in the quality of care they provide. My biggest suggestion to the hospital would be to more closely monitor patients and guests smoking out front of the hospital. The orderly who wheeled me out when I left placed me right in a cloud of smoke while I waited for my ride. He was young, and acted annoyed when I asked him to wheel me somewhere else or let me get up.

My sister received treatment here and I was horrified when I went to visit her. The place is filthy, the staff is rude and the doctors seem inept. She had to be treated a few days later for a serious infection that she contracted here.

This review is for the Endoscopy Clinic at Research. As a disclaimer, this was my only experience with the medical center but I have to say I was impressed. SUPER impressed. As someone who studied health care administration in graduate school and who has worked in a hospital as both an administrator and human resources person, I am always interested to see how different hospitals are run. I am most interested in their patient/​customer service, since we seem to be seeing helath care move to a more consumer-​driven industry where the patient experience can often be as important as the care provided.
I have to say that the staff at Research were incredibly helpful to a groggy patient reporting at 6am for an upper GI scope. I got a little turned around when I got there but the kind folks in Outpatient effectively guided me to the front desk check in.
Our admissions clerk was very helpful and provided a map of the hospital with very specific written and oral instructions on how to to get to the Endoscopy Clinic, resulting in a stress free tranfer.
Once I got to the clinic and was prepping for my procedure, the service was even better. Every person I came in contact with from the RNs to the Anethesiologists, to the Physician performing the procedure was informative and explained every step of the procedure and made sure to introduce themselves and explain their role in my care. I felt that I had a 100% understanding of what was going to happen and what to expect after.
Once in the OR, my physician again made sure I completely understood why were doing the procedure and they had me repeat back to them what we were doing and why to make sure we were all on the same page. Some might think this is crazyor excessive but after studying surgical errors in school, I know that this conversation is actually vital in the OR to ensure that no medical mistakes are made and I fully appreciated this check.
My entire expereince from start to finish was awesome. but I’m not done! The next day after my procedure I received a phone call from the clnic to make sure I was doing ok and to check how my service had been. About a week later, I received a thank you card signed by the clnic staff that had taken care of me… this seems cheesy, but I thought it was awesome that these busy professionals took the time to thank me for choosing them. GREAT patient satisfaction program happening there!
I had a great experience and would and will be back to Research for my care!

I recently spent about 10 days at the hospital attending someone in the ICU, and my experience with the facilities and the people was very positive.
I am impressed with the knowledge and capability of the nurses. They answered my questions with patience and took the time to explain in detail what the treatment was, the rationale for the choices, and the expected outcomes for changes.
My hope is that no one reading this review needs to spend time in ICU (either as a patient or as a visitor), but if it should happen, I encourage you to be comforted that you will receive high-​quality care and treatment.

My daughter was in a very serious accident and driven directly to research medical center, surgical intensive care unit. She has remained there for 3 weeks due to the dificulty and severeness of her injuries. We are very grateful to the medical team who has made major efforts as well as to the rest of the staff. They worked relentlessly to keep my daughter comfortable, clean and with extreme care, and I was highly impressed with their display of never ending efort. We are thankful and grateful and can’t express enough how good this medical center and specially the intensive care unit is. Thank you
