Sheehan’s Irish Imports

My family and I had just finished lunch down the street and needed to kill some time before heading back to Phoenix when we passed Sheehan’s Irish Imports. With the last name of Doherty and being about 189% Irish, I had to stop. I told my wife I was going to just «run» in. Yeah, that didn’t happen. I went back out and had my wife and two boys (8 & 6) join me. I have visited some decent Irish import stores in my time here in the states and this one was THE BEST. Molly was so kind to my wife and I and patient with my two boys. I told her if we didn’t have a flight to catch, we would have stayed another hour and spent three times as much. We were able to purchase about 10 items from jerseys to Celtic knot work frames to a wool driver cap made in County Donegal where my clan is from to hand made stuffed sheep for the kids from Dublin amongst other things. I am all about the experience and Molly Sheehan and her associate absolutely delivered. The detail in her shop is amazing and if you care about your Irish heritage or you need some great Irish garb for St. Patrick’s Day, this is the place. Please stop in and support Sheehan’s, it’s one of my favorite Irish Import Shops in the country!

I’m really surprised I haven’t reviewed Sheehan’s yet! We don’t stop in here very often, but when we do, we always find not only what we’re looking for, but also things that we didn’t know we needed… or great gifts for friends.
This cute store seems small, but there are rooms upon rooms of interesting gifts, jewelry, artwork, food, music, garden items, items on sale, and more. The main focus, obviously, is on Irish items, but plenty of the rest of the Celtic nations are represented as well.
The staff that work here are very friendly, and quick to offer a cup of Irish tea. Some of them are from Ireland, and funnily enough, the last time we were in, one of the girls working there went to the same university in Ireland that my husband went to, and was very familiar with the towns near where he lived. They quite enjoyed talking about «home» and their upcoming holiday plans.
Since the holidays are coming up, on this visit we were searching for mince pies, Cadbury’s roses, and all of the fixings for a full Irish breakfast. We found everything we needed (and more!) at Sheehan’s, and will certainly have a proper Irish-​American Xmas with all of the tastes of home and abroad. The best of both worlds!
As many of the items are imported, the prices are a bit higher than one might expect; but since you just can’t get most of the things Sheehan’s offers without making an international trip, it’s certainly worth it to pay a little bit more.
There really isn’t a big Browne’s vs. Sheehan’s debate, but if I was pressed to pick a favorite between the two, I think I prefer Sheehan’s. We’ll be sure to make a return visit the next time we need to restock our Irish supplies.

This shop is amazing. I bought a lotion there last year and then headed overseas for the year. I came back to Sheehan’s to buy a couple of things and mentioned that the lotion I’d bought was super runny (like water). I wasn’t complaining, just wanting the owner to have a ‘heads up’ that the product was faulty. She took a brand new bottle off the shelf, opened to see if it was in good condition and then gave it to me. GAVE IT TO ME. I had no receipt, no proof of purchase – nothing. What a great way to look at customer service. I highly recommend this lovely shop!

Sheehan’s was a most lovely find on a drizzly day in Kansas City! I was in town a few weeks ago for the Hospital Hill Half Marathon and after the race and lunch, I and a friend went hobbling into the store and were immediately greeted by the owner with a big smile and an offer of a cup of tea. Now that’s true Irish hospitality. The tea was wonderful, and it was so nice to see my favorites (Bewley’s and Barry’s) in their tea section. I was really impressed with the wide selection of just about anything Irish you can think of – I bought a Clannad CD I actually didn’t own, a lovely wall plaque with one of my favorite Irish blessings on it, and a few other little things. Between the tea and the music playing as we browsed, I didn’t want to leave.
The atmosphere of the store really does transport you back to Ireland, and made me want to visit again (both the store and the country). There are so many awesome things tucked away in little crannies of the store that it seems to go on and on, and just when you think you’ve seen it all, you stumble upon another little room. Typically Irish and very adorable. No matter what you are looking for-​a gift for yourself or someone else, you will find it at Sheehan’s. And the warm hospitality cannot be topped anywhere.

I’m totally in love with Sheehan’s. They may not have the history that Browne’s does, but they are just the nicest folks. (I have to say, Kansas City, I’m slightly disappointed I don’t see a Sheehan’s vs. Browne’s rumble in the reviews, since it’s a surprise to me that a town like this has more than one Irish import store. I don’t think Houston, a city of four million, has a single one.)
We walked in on a chilly, rainy day post-​St. Pat’s and the older ladies who run the store asked us if we’d like a mug of Irish tea. It totally hit the spot as we browsed Sheehan’s myriad rooms of Irish doodads. And there’s a lot to browse. T-​shirts, books, mugs, music, crystal, linens, food, home décor and jewelry – it’s all here. I spent almost an entire hour picking and choosing things, both as gifts and for myself.
Some of my favorites: my new lunch bag is a «GO GREEN!» bag from Sheehan’s ($ 3) and my sterling silver St. Bridgid’s Cross necklace (around $ 40) hasn’t left my neck since I put it on. My mom got a «lucky» leash (~$ 22) for her pup made out of shamrock fabrics and it’s become a new favorite since it keeps the dog in line better than her current leash. I also found the second volume of an Irish language book I had in college, Buntus Cainte (~$ 25) and bought it for my sister, language nerd extraordinaire.
And did I mention the ladies who run this place are nice? We got to chatting about my Irish language studies and dance classes, because the Irish community is always happy to find another one of their own.
When I pass through Kansas City again, I’ll definitely find the time to head over to Sheehan’s. It wasn’t just a great shopping experience – with the smell of the tea and the traditional Irish music playing in the background, it was a great memory.

Sheehan’s looks small from the outside but it’s definitely is much larger than it looks. They have a great selection of Irish Imports. They have a wide selection of crystal, puter, jewelry, nicknacks, food, wall hangings and clothes from Ireland.
I have actually been back to visit since our first trip since my daughter wanted to get her hubby a guiness hat. Nice selection of Guiness wear.
Well worth a visit to check out the selection if looking for Irish imports. I did feel they are a little on the pricey side after visiting a few other irish import stores but they have a huge selection.

Easily the most extensive Irish import shop in the metro, as far as I know. I, too, am always enchanted by the smell of burning turf immediately upon entering the shop, and as anybody who’s spent time in Ireland knows, if coziness were to have a scent, it would be that of burning peat. A couple of Christmases ago, I purchased their small turf incense burner for me auld Irish ma along with a refill pack of tiny peat brick refills for it. It was a big hit! I have no idea why I haven’t gotten one for my own place.
The store is much bigger than it looks (it just keeps going back, and back, and back, into li’l rooms full of treasures), and the breadth of items offered is almost catalog-​like in its scope. Many Irish shops are good for a handful of Aran sweaters, some Beleek, and little shamrock trinkets and that’s it. Not so with Sheehan’s. They have an outstanding jewelry selection, artisan garments from a wide range of well-​regarded woolen mills (whenever my beloved Branigan Weavers cape/​shawl gives up the ghost, I know where I’ll be going for its replacement), and a nice imported foods selection, too. Books, music, film, it’s all here.
The people who work here are very attentive, if perhaps a bit TOO attentive, sometimes (the only reason I’ve not gone with five stars is that, at times, one can feel a little «stalked» through the store, and since it’s my own personal browser’s paradise, that can feel a little awkward. Not sure if they have a big shoplifting problem that they’re determined to nip in the bud, or if they’re just that enthusiastic about their wares that they are pretty much always at your elbow. At any rate, ultra-​attentiveness on the floor notwithstanding, it’s great shop, and one to hit up, for sure, for anybody with a love of all things Celtic.

As I walked in the door i was struck by the most familiar smell «What is it, where have i smelled that before» then it hit me I was smelling peat. If you ever have the pleasure of visiting the Irish countryside then you will be familiar with the very distinct aroma of peat and it turns out the Sheehan’s actually sell peat incense or if you prefer bricks of turf that you can throw on your fire to create that earthy, smokey smell. But enough about my love of burning peat.
Sheehan’s seem’s like a tiny little shop but it is much larger than it looks. They have a great selection of Irish Imports. If you want your beautiful Irish wool hat, sweater, scarf or wrap, they have it, Irish crystal, they have it, Irish football jerseys and souvenirs, they have those as well. They even import some great Irish food items such as tea, bangers and much more. The brown bread has always been my favorite. If you are looking for that perfect Irish gift or just an interesting little shop to visit check out Sheehan’s.

This is a great little Irish imports store. The people are friendly and the quality of the goods is incredible. I had the pleasure of meeting three of the Irish artisans, John Branigan of Branigan Weavers, John Condron of Fado & Co (jewelry) and Peter Collins of Mullingar Pewter. They are wonderful people with beautiful pieces. I am happily warm in my John Branigan original. So if you are looking for wonderful gifts that are beautifully hand crafted I recommend Sheehan’s.
