Coconut Marketplace

It was closed! Although there were signs all over saying they were open during the reconstruction. There may have been a two or three little shops in the outdoor portion that were still open but they weren’t when I stopped by. I hope next time I visit the island this place has been totally redone and open for business.

By reading the many reviews of this place, it is sad to see that the place has not yet flourished with business. The Coconut Marketplace is conveniently located near some resorts. It was walking distance from our room so we decided to check it out. As of April 2016, many of the retail spaces are still empty. There are signs saying «Yes shops are open» but only a handful of shops are there. There is construction going on as of April 2016. Went to check out the Coconut Marketplace during the night. Although they say they close at 9PM, they close much earlier. As of now, all the shops close at 3PM. I asked around and workers said that business is extremely slow due to the construction. This place would be booming once they get the retail places filled and construction is completed! I hope to come back to Coconut Marketplace in a year or so to see if business is flourishing. It really is a nice shopping center.

Most stores do not open until 10am. Overall, I think this shopping mall is decent, not spectacular. Most store owners are generally friendly. One of them was a bit pushy. They do have farmers market in the parking lot every Tuesday and Thursday. We came here late and I miss out on fresh coconut. If you want to visit their farmers market, you might want to come here early.

Overall this market place is ok. It looks like they were doing some renovations while I was visiting and there were quite a number of store fronts available for rent, but if you’re looking for souvenirs & snacks, and staying close to this locations it’s worth a visit.

It’s disappointing to return here six years later and not really see more business open in the marketplace.
It seems like the same businesses are here, which is a great thing. You can find plenty of souvenirs items in each store. If you are looking for bargains, you may want to check elsewhere.

Closes earlier than advertised, super touristy, generally no character. Tons of shopping for souvenirs if needed. Under construction

Its okay. There is a whaler general store in there and also the supposedly famous but expensive Lappert’s ice-​cream place. Every saturday and wednesday they have a free Hula show which is not worthy at all. Its more of a propaganda machine for one lady named Leilanie who is selling her CDs and fresh flower Lei. We did not visit any restaurant’s while we stayed next door at Plantation Hale. There is plenty of parking around the market.

Compaired to 10 years ago when we were here last, it is so so sad. It was clearly hit hard by the bad economy :(And even worse is that some of it is under construction as hopefully a regeneration process. There are a few shops and a few food places still left and the culteral center still has fun low cost classes along with the free Hula shows on Wednesdays at 5. The food places are yum! Our favorite was and still is Harvey’s. They are also on Unilocal.Also, the farmers market is still good to come to. I really hope it is able to come alive again. It is still definitely worth stopping by :) pls send your money on the shops here and not at walmart… these shops are family owned by locals and it will help boost their local economy :)

Although many retail spots are still empty, Coconut Marketplace still boasts a bunch of fun stores! There is a good strip of stores with a variety of merchandise.
I missed the farmer’s market and hula shows but I got handmade ice cream and Iz’s «Facing Future» album from the music stand. The music stand owner is awesome. Her husband sometimes plays live Hawaiian music by the stand, and he’s great! No wonder, since he’s the first cousin of Iz Kamakawiwo’olé, the famed Hawaiian musician.
Then my husband and I had brunch at Eggbert’s. We got the Egg’s Benedict, and it was tasty. Loved the whole relaxed Hawaiian vibe of Coconut Marketplace. If you have 1 – 2 hours to spare, and you come from the port, hop on a free shuttle and visit! The free shuttle arrives every hour, so don’t miss it!

Kinda sad that most of the shops here are gone. I hope one day they can breath new life into this old place.

A very eclectic collection of stores. The free Hula shows are simply awesome. The gift shops and t-​shirt shops are also amazing and carry a variety of souvenirs.

Generally overpriced tourist stuff In Wialua. Close to resorts but that’s about it.
Eggbert’s is a saving grace but not cheep.

This place has a lot of potential, but as of June 2013 it’s really sad. More than half of the retail spaces are empty and yet they are still building more retail kiosks in the middle of the complex.
I arrived around 11 am for the farmer’s market that took about 20 seconds to walk through. Nothing really special about any of the fruit vendors. A couple of vendors did offer free samples of papaya and mango.
All in all, this is not a place that you need to visit in Kapaa.

Ghost town. Tourist trap.

Was here for Tuesday morning Farmer’s market. There were fewer than a dozen vendors and they pretty much had similar products. But you’ve got to try everything they offer: Rambutan,
Egg fruits (Filipino Chesa) (
), Papayas, pineapples, gigantic avocados and mangoes, different types of bananas, several types of oranges. I had just missed the season for atis (
). Try purple sweet potatoes, fern heads, winged beans (Psophocarpus tetragonolobus), long beans, eggplants, tomatoes, Maui onions, longan fruit and Lilikoi.
A vendor had Lilikoi mousse and that was absolutely the best: her name is Priscilla. (

Oh my!

This little shopping center is the main shopping (and only) in Kapa’a town. It has been run down over the years, especially since the theatre went out of business. That said, the ABC Stores group recently purchased the property and it is coming back to life. There are free hula shows three times a week. The performers are all young students from a local hula halau (troupe). There is also a farmer’s market twice a week.
Some of the best stores are the Jackson Clark Art Gallery, Kauai Pearls, the Hawaiian Cultural Center, the clothes stores and of course Lappert’s ice cream!

I love the little Coconut MarketPlace. There’s a Lapperts, and a lot of shops to get your tourist shopping done. Great little restaurants to eat too, that are not overpriced and great little places to feed the kids.

I am so disappointed. I thought for sure from all the signs on the outside that this would be a great place to shop. We got there at 10am and nothing and when I say nothing I mean NOTHING was open. They didnt open till noon. Even if we did come back there was hardly any shops there. We walked around to check everything out and there were more restaurants than shops.
Overall— not impressed.

The most disappointing thing about shopping in Kauai is that there is nothing authentic to buy.
The stores are nothing but junk and expensive knockoffs imported from China, Taiwan, and Indonesia. If you are looking to buy an actual Kauai product, your options are mostly limited to coffee, candy, honey, or Red Dirt Shirts (which, by the way, are pointlessly overrated and overpriced). Don’t let the retailers fool you. Neither they, nor their Auntie nor Uncle made anything that they are selling. It is pretty obvious, too, since every single store (even the seemingly homemade tents and ever present «craft fairs» found along the road) sells the exact same things at varying prices. Never buy anything until you have visited at least 3 other stores AND Walmart to see if the same thing can be found for much cheaper.
The vast majority of the market is deserted with empty shops and decade old water damage from the hurricanes. There are a few places to get a snack, but they aren’t very good.
Aside from wasting time on a rainy East side day, there is really no need to come here, but if you have a hoard of family members at home expecting crappy gifts, what else do you have to do? There is a free Hula Show on Wednesdays at 5pm and Saturdays at 1pm which is OK, but not as good as others on the island.

Yeah, it’s partially deserted here but that does not mean there aren’t a few good gems.
If you’re looking for a great Tahitian pearl, then Kauai Pearls & Gold is your stop. For the Denny Wong collection that doesn’t tarnish, then Grande’s Gems is located in here. And finally if you’re looking to upgrade your shoes or sandals, then Sole Mates is your stop. And for a great breakfast or brunch, then you’ve got Eggberts.
It’s got potential here, but it is definitely on the quiet side.
