Dr. Makini focuses on developing patient & public awareness about the critical importance of proper vision care in the lives of infants, students of all ages, professionals, athletes & the elderly with efforts of making a difference in the quality of each life. Although Dr. Makini offers regular services (Eye Exams, Contacts, Eyewear Boutique, Lasik), he also offers services not found anywhere else: The Academic Vision Care Program: Academic-performance based vision care that comprehensively addresses the ever changing 21st century demands that children/students face today, placing them on a level to which professional athletes are examined. Eyes Plus Inc is also the home of the public awareness program: Project S.A.V.E. (Supporting Academic & Visual Excellence) This program’s vital information often provides parents & professionals with the solution to a child’s seemingly unsolvable or frustrating academic difficulties that could be easily mistaken for behavior conditions like ADHD.
History
Established in 1990.
Dr. Hank Makini, a ’79 grad of St. Louis High School, attended Pacific University & Pacific University College of Optometry while simultaneously living (8 yrs) at the Forest Grove Fire Department serving as a ‘resident’ fire fighter. He earned his B.S. degree in Visual Science (1983) & his doctorate degree (1987)(doctoral thesis in Sports Vision). Returning to Hawaii, Dr. Makini began his optometric career as an associate in Leeward Oahu. In 1990, Dr. Makini opened his first private practice in Nanakuli, where at the same time, began a screening program in conjunction with the local elementary schools for Chapter One readers. In ’95, the office was relocated to Kapolei. Community Service History: 1992 – 94 served as Secretary-Nanakuli Neighborhood Housing Board, 1999 – 2000 served as Secretary-Executive Board of the Hawaii Optometric Association, 2000, ran for a Hawaii State Senate seat, 2001-03 served on Ewa Neighborhood Board, 2007 – 2011 served on the Hawaii State Board of Examiners.
