It is very true that only the best businesses are busy. I’ve read comments about it being hard to get in contact with Nick but if he is busy, it’s because people are demanding his work.

I contacted Nick yesterday to help me replace a door at the house I just moved out of. He contacted me back immediately (even on a Sunday) and we were able to schedule the job for the next day! He was very helpful and understanding that this was a last second job because I have my walk through with the property manager tomorrow. He did a great job, quickly and gave me a great deal. I will definitely be contacting him with any other work we need done. Thank you Nick!

Justin, nick’s brother came out to my home on time to install a fan lighting fixture in my child’s bedroom. very efficient, straight up with a quote and did the job promptly same day. he also stated he does other work including full home remodeling. very pleased with his work. highly recommend this guy to anyone who needs home repairs. handymen Oahu has my seal of approval.

Contacted Nick for repairing a door frame and wall. Small job but he was able to take it. On the day it was suppose to get done he got stuck at other jobs so wasn’t able to show on time. However he stayed that night until after 8pm to finish the job, and it was excellent work. Couldn’t even notice it had ever been broke. I would use Nick again if I have more work to be done.

Nick was a extremely accommodating and professional. I had a leak from my bathtub that seeped into the neighboring apartment below. A plumber had to go into my neighbor’s bathroom, cut a hole in the ceiling, and fix the overflow cap. I called Nick to patch the ceiling. Since it was an emergency, Nick handled it promptly and did a perfect job. Unlike other companies who do the shortcut, Nick did 4 mud patches with sanding between each one, spray texture to match the existing, and two coats of paint on the entire ceiling. There is no evidence of a hole at all because he went above and beyond my expectations and did a full day’s work by himself. My neighbor was so impressed with his work that she thanked me as well for hiring him. I am very happy and will hire Nick again in a heartbeat. Mahalo!

Well, this review is LONG overdue. Sorry it’s taken so long, Nick!
First — if you want someone who knows a lot about a lot — nick is your guy. If he doesn’t know, he’s built up a base to be able to give you a solid recommendation of someone who does.
Second — Nick is a nice, honest, personable guy. He was in our house for several days doing our upstairs floor. After the first day, he was like a member of our home who just so happens to leave around 5:00.
Third: his prices are fair. I searched all over the island for a reasonable deal. All I needed was someone to come in and out down the floor. It did not require leveling and I did my own demo. Most people I tried wanted to get rich off me. Not Nick.
Fourth: if you need something done quick, you might want to loom elsewhere. Nick works by himself most of the time and does his own books and scheduling. He’s busy and is in demand. We told him we wanted him to do the work and were willing to wait. I’m glad we did.
Five: he was usually on time to start his day. If he was going to be late, he would call and tell us. I appreciate that.
Overall, we liked nick and are very pleased with the work he did. We want him to come back and do other work in our house!

Nick helped us replace some screens and some hose bibs. I was happy that he gives free estimates, he stayed in communication, and he met our deadline. While working, he respected our home as if it was his own. We are very happy with his work and I’m sure we will use him again if we have a project. Mahalo Nick!

Negative 10 stars … DO NOT USE Nick at Handyman Oahu or his father Loy Sparks at Home Solutions Oahu. Our job seemed too small for Nick so he referred us to his father Loy. Loy provided a written estimate that looked professional and even gave us a start date. He cancelled the entire job 2 minutes before he was scheduled to start. No explanation for cancelling the job. When I told him that I took off from work to be there to help my Dad, he told me that he didn’t ask me to take off from work! When I sent his son an email to complain about his referral. Nick didn’t have the time to take on our job, but spent quite a lot of time sending me rude emails about how it wasn’t his fault… I told him that whomever he refers is a direct reflection of his work ethics and attitude. DO NOT USE these rude people because they are a prime example of how the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree. Be safe and use someone else.

My husband and I are really pleased with Nick’s response time and work. Our house was put on the market and our real estate agent gave us very little time and lots of small renovation projects. We called Nick to help repair some laminate flooring and install new carpet on the stairs.
His voicemail explained that he did not often take calls when he is working, but he did call me back the same day. I sent him some photos and he provided us with an accurate quote. Nick took a break from a larger project to help get our floors ready for the open house. He was on time, professional and cleaned up thoroughly after. He paid attention to detail, a trait that seems very rare in Hawaii.
His pricing was fair and we plan to contact him to help on upcoming projects at our new house. Highly recommended. Be patient, good workmanship is hard to find!

This is a past due, but well deserved review. Nick has done work for us twice now (he tiled our lanai and recently remodeled our shower). One of the top reasons we will continue to work with Nick is that he is meticulous, not taking any shortcuts. He communicates well and listened to our wants. He also worked in our condo, with all it’s rules. His pricing is fair and he was able to work within our timeline. We will be using him again and we won’t be disappointed.

I found this company through Unilocal reviews and decided to give it a try. All the positive comments that I read are true! From the moment I reached out to Nick to the moment he left our home, was all a very positive experience. Nick answered his phone immediately, his quote for pricing on the job we wanted done immediately and was prompt at our door. Results from putting curtains in our baby’s room were beautiful. It was better than anything we could of done ourselves. Nick was very professional & I am extremely pleased with his work. We bought our first home a year ago and as all homeowners know, every weekend was spent fixing things around the house. A few weeks ago we accidentally punched a hole through our ceiling (don’t ask!) and it was beyond our expertise. My husband BEGRUDGINGLY admitted that we needed a professional. Nick was a godsend — answered all of our questions, gave me a very fair price, and I was able to text him a photo of the hole for an estimate (such a timesaver instead of getting him out to do an estimate) — easy peezy.
We were so appreciative of his help that my husband, who does not like to hire outside help ever, asked him to complete other jobs on top of the original request. That is the ultimate compliment!

When you look up the dependable and professional you will find Nick from Handyman Oahu. I contacted him on a Friday and he stop by my house on Monday to do an estimate. We agreed to the work and price via email, which I thought was very professional. He was on time to start the project (blinds, closet doors, washer and dryer door and lanai blinds). The thing that I like about Nick is that he is very thorough and pays attention to details. He is not one to rush a project. Great craftsmanship, and very honest in his price to complete the job. I would recommend him to everybody I know. I can’t thank him enough for helping me to complete my home projects

Nick responded promptly to a request for estimate on leveling our second floor sub flooring before we started a DIY floating wood floor installation. After assessing floor sections that were uneven by up to ¼″, he provided an estimate and a scheduled work date and duration. On the scheduled day, he texted and arrived as scheduled. The job was completed in a few hours and he provided some suggestions on troubleshooting any future uneven floor solutions. Over the next week, our wood floor project was completed on a level and solid subfloor. Nick’s reliability, service, and work quality were excellent. We will definitely use him again.

I left a voicemail for Nick. He called me back right away. I explained the issues I had with the house specially the moldy AC that needed to be replaced ASAP. He told me to go buy the AC I wanted and he would be by the same evening or next day to give an estimate of all the things I needed to be done and get to the AC ASAP. He told me to email him a list of the things as well, which I did. He said he or his father would be able to helpful w/​the critical things and then when he returned from vacation he would take care of the rest. He also responded to me email same day and said he would get back to me. Day of the 2^nd no other word. Day of the 3^rd no response to voicemail or email. Day 4 I called and his voicemail said he was off island. He totally flaked out and left me hanging after he told me he would get back to me and take care of AC. How can a business owner say he will do something then disappear. If he was leaving so soon he should have told me. Now I’m left trying to find someone else to do these repairs. I dont appreciate his unprofessional behavior by saying he would get back to me then disappear! Bad business!!!
Update after getting reply from Nick. Nick you told me you would get back to me next day. You did not. You said you would come by and do the estimate for sure. You did not do this which again in my opinion is bad business to tell a potential client you will do something and then never get back to me. To answer your question, no I would not have written a bad review if your price was too high or I went with someone else. That is your prerogative. But leaving me hanging like that, telling someone you are going to do something then don’t follow through IS bad business. Bottom line, If you were too busy then you should not have told me you would come by to do the estimate and be able to fit in the change of the AC. The only rude part is leaving someone with the expectation that you are going to do something and then not get back to that person. So I recommend not telling people that if you cant fit them in.

Nick just completed a bathroom renovation for me that took a little over two weeks. In that time I got to know him and his workmanship pretty well. So I’m going to write a comprehensive review.

The first thing you’ll notice about Nick is that he’s an affable, likable, positive person. He’s genuinely a great guy. He cares about his customers. He listens when you have concerns about any aspect of the project, and he tries to accommodate you.

The written estimate Nick created at the start of the job was probably the clearest, most useful estimate I’ve ever received from a handyman. He kept in constant communication with me throughout the project so I was never left wondering what was going on. He responded promptly (usually immediately) to my emails, phone calls, and text messages.
He also stands by his work. If something goes wrong he’ll come back and fix it.

One day when I was out of the house, Nick and his helper moved an incredibly heavy cast iron tub up a flight of stairs. As soon as I returned home, Nick immediately showed me a couple of places where the tub had caused damage during the move. The damage was very minor and nearly invisible, but he wanted to be completely forthright about it and take responsibility for it.

The breadth of Nick’s knowledge of construction is impressive. He started in construction when he was just a kid working for his dad, so he developed expertise at a young age. He invents clever solutions to problems that crop up. When he doesn’t know the best way forward he has the humility to consult with other experts. And most importantly, he is extremely careful, deliberate, and detail-​oriented, and he takes the time to do things right. He doesn’t rush or take shortcuts. As a result, he does excellent work.
Some specifics:
* He carefully braced all the pipes in the wall of the shower, which I didn’t even know to ask for.
* He did a great job installing our tiles. He has smart strategies for installing tiles to keep them as straight and symmetrical as possible.
* He applied commercial epoxy grout rather than standard sanded grout. The epoxy grout is waterproof and requires less maintenance, but it’s harder to apply and if you try DIY you’ll probably mess it up. The grout lines in the bathroom are clean and straight.
* He spent extra time to get rid of the sandy texture on the old drywall in the bathroom before applying the softer orange-​peel texture I wanted. He applied skim coat and sanded multiple times. (He claims he doesn’t do «level 5» drywall work, which is a premium finish where the wall is perfectly smooth. But as I read the definition of level 5 online and look at what Nick did, he sure comes close to that standard.)
* He created a niche in our shower surround. He cleverly sloped the bottom ever-​so-​slightly inward so water would run off into the tub. It looks and works great. Much nicer than using the side of the tub as a shelf and accidentally knocking bottles over all the time.

So when you put all these qualities together, and add positive Unilocal reviews to the mix, what do you get? A handyman who is in demand.
Nick hires helpers as needed, but he has discovered that he needs to be personally involved in every project in order to guarantee the level of quality he wants associated with his business. This is admirable and I think it’s the right decision. But it means his business cannot scale to match the demand. He wants to reply to everybody promptly, but there are only so many hours in a day and he is just one person. He can’t make phone calls while also installing drywall. I think he’d like to take every job that comes his way, but that’s impossible.
My advice is that if you think you’d like to work with Nick, be patient & understanding with the other demands on his schedule, and be as flexible as you can with your own schedule. His work for his current client takes priority over responding to new calls. So it may take a little time to schedule your estimate. Once he starts work on your project, you can rest assured that he’ll focus on your project like a laser, and the job will get done and get done right.

In conclusion: Nick Sparks provides excellent service. He is reliable and trustworthy. I’d gladly work with him again in a heartbeat. I give him my highest recommendation.

**UPDATE**
I’m a fan of Nick the Handyman now. He finally contacted me and had a long conversation with me explaining his situation and workload and giving tips and advice on my project NONE of which he had to do! And the thing that sold me on Nick was that he wasn’t contacting me because I wrote a negative review but just because he ALWAYS tries to follow up on calls. HE DID NOT KNOW I HAD WRITTEN A NEGATIVE REVIEW. Nick is a standup guy. He’s busy. He’s a small business owner that understands how to take care of his clients. If you try to contact him and it takes longer than you’re used to just know that if he can fit you in he will.
Unilocal is all about reviews from people with actual experience with the people/​companies we review. To be fair, I only gave Nick 4 stars simply because we haven’t actually done a project together yet. But based on his character (just talk to him and you’ll know what I mean) I’d give him FIVE stars but to be true to the spirit of Unilocal and people like you and me who trust the reviews you read I’m forced to give 4 stars because I am a fan of Nick the Handyman.

Called Nick the handyman to help me install a tiled soap holder to the bathroom shower wall since it was a fail when I tried. Didn’t help that a rep from the Home Depot tile department recommended me the wrong thinset. At least they returned my money back when I returned the product.
So… Nick was able to come over on a day we scheduled and completed the job. It was nice of him to recommend different commercial thinsets to use (not the premade stuff) as one dries faster than the other. I told him that i was not in a rush as we had another bathroom to use. On top of that he also recommended some things that I could do on my own to save some money. Thanks again Nick.

I have known Nick Sparks for over 5 years now. Its great to see his progression through the years with his work. He is a man of integrity and has a great work ethic. I have refereed him to many of my customers. And they are all pleased with his work and him, in general. Nicks only fault that i’m aware of is, he’s an extremely poor golfer.
Call Nick he gets the job done.

Had Nick back to do both of my bathrooms — and it turned out beautifully! I had ugly old 1970s bathrooms (rotting fiberboard cabinets, mold, and other hideousness). Again, Nick was so easy to work with — giving me realistic advice when I told him my HGTV-​inspired plans — and keeping me posted daily as the job progressed. The guys he has working with him are also very skilled, and he kept my building manager happy throughout the project (very important for condo living)!
Interestingly, Nick was working on my project when apparently Danielle H had her negative experience with him. I must say that what she describes doesn’t sound like Nick AT ALL — having worked with him for weeks at this point, he’s always been very responsive and punctual. Perhaps I was the demanding other client that was overwhelming him via text, phone and email during that time. I hope not! At any rate, he gets 5 stars in my book. I’ve posted some photos so you can see the transformation — so pleased with the results!
