Kapolei Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

As a practitioner of Brazilian Jiu-​Jitsu in Hawaii for over 8 years, and visited many schools on this island, Kapolei BJJ is the premier academy west of HNL airport. If I’m ever central of Oahu and can’t make it back to my home BJJ school, I’ll drop in here for some great instruction and training. This is definitely a place you won’t have to question the legitimacy of anyone’s belt ranking. If I see their white belts with a single stripe, I know they put in the quality time to earn that piece of tape.
With that being said, this place is great for the persons that want to get a great workout in, in a family oriented environment. Everyone makes you feel welcome, even to visitors stopping by. Professor Shane and Kimmie spend the necessary time to help with your overall BJJ game and health and fitness.

Great place for children and adults. A safe and friendly environment to learn one of the most effective martial arts. Instructors are top-​notch, provide appropriate training for all levels, and are always willing to give their time to assist the students. People from all over the island come to train here. Extremely convenient for those who live on the leeward side. And if you’re new to the gym, they give you a free trial run! It’s definitely worth a try.

My boys have been coming to KBJJ for about two years now. They started off shy and unsure of their abilities and have gained so much confidence. My boys love coming to class. As if learning BJJ isn’t enough for the children, they also have a little time segment at the end of class where Shane will go over a value (compassion, perseverance, determination, etc). Qualities that the children learn about and are encouraged to exemplify. Belts are Earned here. Not just handed out because you’ve attended X amount of classes. I think this is very important. It gives a much more rewarding sense of accomplishment and enables the kids and adults alike to work hard to achieve their goals. Which is applicable throughout life.
I also love the family friendly environment and I’ve loved watching our KBJJ ohana grow. I started taking the adult class for a while, but went on hiatus for a lengthy period. Now that life is beginning to be a little less chaotic schedule wise I can get back into the swing of things.
I really enjoy the all women’s class. Not only do we learn self defense and BJJ techniques, but you come into a welcoming sisterhood of women from all walks of life. You get a great workout as you’re having fun. Everyone needs an outlet for their personal Me Time. KBJJ is an awesome positive outlet to help you release the negative stresses in life. You’re bound to have some good laughs through class while we are having fun learning moves and rolling. Lots of the women in the women’s class are moms of children in the kids classes.
Kimmie and Shane are very helpful in answering questions or providing assistance 1:1 in guiding you to execute a move accurately that have been having trouble with. They are more than happy to help before and after class if you’re trying to figure something out, but don’t quite got it right. During class they are attentive to everyone on the mat and have a great teaching style that works.

I recently dropped in to Kapolei BJJ’s space for a special open mat session and I got to say, I’m impressed with the space! KBJJ’s space is efficiently organized, with benches along the sides, but a nice amount of mat area to roll and drill on.
The space itself is «warehouse-​y» and it can get really hot but it can have a nice airflow going through it as well. It’s pretty easy to find and close to the Costco in Kapolei.
Kimmie Agena is one of the nicest and most welcoming people around! She is currently a purple belt and rolling with her is a fierce experience in itself! She instructs some of the classes, as well as the weekly women’s BJJ class! (One day, I’ll make it in to train with them!) I usually roll with Kimmie in various locations and it’s been a wonderful learning experience each time. I have no doubt that wonderful attitude and personality translates to her students at KBJJ! Personally, I consider her a very supportive mentor! Shane Agena is the head instructor of Kapolei BJJ and a black belt under Relson Gracie. He is a friend of my head instructor, Todd Tanaka, and has a great reputation in the community. I have heard nothing but good things about Shane and Kimmie.
Having a met a few of the women that train out of KBJJ, I am also impressed with the atmosphere and respectful attitude from them. They have been friendly and fun to roll with.
I frequently see photos of the events KBJJ puts on, such as the kids classes bringing their parents in to train with them and have mini contests to compete in. I think that is adorable and a great way to bring in an interactive element that welcomes in more families. Brilliant! I look forward to seeing what other events KBJJ offers to their students.

This the best place to train. The staff is very helpful and professional. They are family oriented and make you feel very welcome. The instructions are easy to follow and make training informative and fun. I have been training there for over a year and I have made tremendous gains in my ground game.

Great place to train at… Everyone is friendly… All types of classes between kids adults and even women’s… The coach is really attentive to the student… Not like other big gyms where the coach don’t know who you are… This one is family type and friendly… Love it…

Shane and Kim Agena are some of the best people in and out of the Jiu jitsu family, they represent greatness, respect, and have great love for preserving the Gracie art of jiu jitsu

My daughters look forward to class every week. With the world nowadays, I am so glad we have KBJJ to give them the tools and confidence they need. The classes are not only fun but my girls leave learning helpful skills and techniques that prepare them for life. We’ve been members (more like family) since about 2011 because we love it so much and I know you will too!
