History

Established in 2000.

The Franciscan Guest House started out as a Catholic boarding school for boys mostly of Lithuanian descent. The friars of St. Anthony’s Monastery taught the classes and managed the school. The school closed but the buildings went on to become a guest house starting in the 60’s. About 15 years ago, it became a non-profit hotel. It’s been a very slow process of improving the buildings and rooms. Some people love the informal, plain, simple accommodations which admittedly haven’t changed that much since the 70’s. However, guests that have been coming for 40 years have seen the changes to the improvements to the rooms and hotel that may not be noticeable to a new guest. While the property is non-profit, to make improvements, the hotel charges rates based on location more than style. In addition, the Franciscan Guest House provides much needed retreat facilities for all religious groups. Income goes into the hotel, to subsidize religious retreats and to other non-profit organizations.
