History

Established in 1947.

Mario and Martha Ventura purchased an old school house on a dirt road that connected Chicago and Milwaukee. They converted it into a roadside stop, small diner and deli with a selection of cheeses and meats. After a few years, the store burned down and was rebuilt, only this time, adding a sign to attract travelers. Years passed by and the dirt road was converted into an interstate highway. Fearing that they would not survive this change, the Ventura’s moved their family to California and spent a few years away while the highway was built. When they returned, the travelers found their way to the store and the Mars’ Cheese Castle was reborn! In 2008, the store began the process of relocating because the state of Wisconsin needed the land it was on for the next phase in highway expansion. March of 2011 was the grand opening of the new facility 100 yards west of the former location. 66 years and 3 generations later, the castle has become a state icon and destination for travelers.
