Southernmost Point

Another place you must check out when visiting Key West for the first time is the Southernmost Point It’s a very popular tourists photo spot. Imagine this huge landmark made of concrete, sitting in the intersection of South Street and Whitehead Street, is only about 90 miles away from Cuba. How cool is that?
We purposely planned our trip during the weekdays so we can avoid the weekend crowd. And when we got there, there was still a line but not very bad. What’s surprising to me was that everyone was waiting in line patiently for their turn to take the photos. But on average, most people takes about 5 minutes taking pictures with this giant buoy, and most people in line was happy to take the pictures for your group.
There is street parking, but good luck on getting a spot. Since our hotel was not too far from here, we decided to walk here. It wouldn’t be not too bad if you don’t do it in the summer.

The line to get a picture will probably always be forever long but it’s worth a picture or three:) considering its the southernmost point of the United States on soil that is and you can see Cuba about 97 miles off into the distance it’s pretty cool to say the least. Key West is always delightful and every time I come down here I always have to visit.

We had so much fun at Key West. Can’t wait to go back. The Southernmost Point is just one of the many attractions on this wonderful island. Shopping and food was top shelf if you wanted.

I mean, it’s pretty cool. It’s a gigantic buoy. Nothing too awe-​inspiring on the surface. However, one must admit that it’s pretty damn cool being 90 miles away from Cuba! Southernmost Point is one of those travel spots you have to get a picture with. It’s like if you went to Paris but didn’t get a picture of the Eiffel Tower. No one would believe you! Do what I did-​get someone to drive you and pull over close by, run out and ask a kind looking stranger to take your picture, take fifteen seconds to contemplate your place in the universe, and go do something else.

It seems on a must go list in key west, but the long waiting line made it worth little and less attractive.

You must stop at he Southernmost Point when visiting Key West! There was a small line when we got there, and everyone just asks the person behind them to take their picture. Great stop!

Kinnda, weird because in the map it’s not really the southernmost point in the Continental USA it is located on the base Naval Base of course that’s off the public what is just a dream to be real near to Cuba I don’t know maybe Obama will change that

It’s big.
It’s heavy.
It’s concrete.
It’s a tourist trap.
I fall victim every visit.
I love cliché tourism photos sometimes but I love this one always.
Especially early in the morning when I can find easy parking along the street and a VERY short line of people!

Yes and it all happens in about the same amount of time it takes to read this entire review, LOL.
Not a lot else to see or do here, other than look out across the ocean to see if you can actually see Cuba 90 miles away.
OVERALL: The southernmost point in the US… been there, done that and have the photo to prove it!

It’s a tourist attraction you have to do while in Key West. I know there is a line. I know it is cliché. I know that you need to use the bathroom and it is tiring standing here. You have to get over it though!
This concrete buoy was put here in the early 80s and has been a staple every since. Technically it isn’t the southernmost point as it states, but it is close enough. You cannot access the southernmost point since it is on a military base. Make do with the next best thing and snap a shot.
Plan accordingly:
— Use the bathroom.
— Expect a minimum 30 minute wait.
— Bring H2O for hydration.
— Make sure your camera is ready because you really only get a couple opportunities within a 20 second period to get THE SHOT to prove you were there.
— Read the historical markers around it to take up some of the time you have to stand there to learn of its history beyond the southernmost point marker.
Most of all, enjoy!

I’ve driven by this place so many times but have never stopped until that day. Great view but to over crowded with tourists all waiting to take a picture, but I get it. They had some cool history postings and a cool statue to go along with it. I have to say this is a must stop if you ever come to Key West. All that beautiful ocean view is a reminder of how beautiful Florida truly is, what a great beautiful state we live in

Definitely a tourist spot. But it’s free! Get a good picture.
P. s. be nice to the person behind you and in front of you. They might be able to take your picture for you.

Ah, tourists. How we must love thee.
This is one of those things that everyone who instagrams needs to go and stand in front of so they can #hashtag how it’s #socool. Too bad it’s not actually true (read Glenn’s review!) and at the end of the day it’s a giant buoy.
Came here with BF and parents who are all the picture taking type, so we stood in line for a good 20 – 30 minutes at 2:00 or so to get the obligatory picture. I can’t imagine how bad said line would be at sunset. If I could climb on top of the damn thing I’d want a picture of that, that would be cool.
There’s a couple historical blurbs about how the point came to be and such if you’re so inclined to learn while you’re here. Tours will inevitably go by in trolleys and make fun of you for standing in line to see a painted buoy. And you don’t care. Sort of.
For the guy who owns the gated property immediately to the left of this thing-​I envy and yet pity you. There will always be a million people in your driveway…

1. Get your butt here.
2. Stand in line. Depending on the time of the day, it could be long. If you are smart, you would come at night, like me. The wait was 30 seconds.
3. Pose, take a photo.
4. Head to a bar and continue drinking.
*Sometimes the tides are high so the whole place might be super wet.
Questions: Will I see Cuba? No.
Questions: Is it free? Yes.
Questions: Is there a photographer? No, bring your own camera. There will usually be other tourists there who can take the photo for you, if not bring your selfie stick or selfie stand.

We arrived here about 5.30pm, just as the sun was setting. There was a line. It moved pretty quickly but there was almost no chance of getting a photo without people in it so we just lined up.
I decided to ask the people in front of us if they wanted us to take a picture of the 3 of them together which was a great move for everyone because they got a picture together, they returned the favour and it went faster for everyone.
Most other people stand there and take a picture, then swap, then swap. It’s very annoying. No matter what you’ll probably get people in the background though.

Southernmost Point is definitely one of those must-​do tourist destinations in Key West, but it’s not very charming. At the end of the day, it’s a literally just a ocean buoy with some paint on it.
Every time I walk around here, there is always 20 or 30 people on line waiting to get their picture taken. So all the pictures may look pretty nice, you have to wait in line for 20 minutes. There’s no real infrastructure or museum associated with this place. There are some stands selling coconuts or hotdogs and stuff like that, but that’s about it.
If you’re in Key West, you have to go, but once is by far enough.

Muss man sicherlich gesehen haben wenn man in Key West ist. Auch ein Photo ist ganz schick. Ob man sich dafür aber in die (kostenlose) Schlange stellen muss, bei der Hitze, kann ja jeder für sich selbst entscheiden. Ich habe es gerne getan.

Tourist trap — but hey, it’s a free attraction with a lot of meaning.
This is the literally the southernmost point of the US. 90 miles from Cuba, I wished for a brief second to be Cuban so I could feel the significance of this monument.
There was a long line to take pictures with the buoy, so we decided to skip the line and try to get a selfie with it several feet away. All there is to do at this tourist attraction is take your picture and go. There is a lot of hype for such a brief experience. There are some booths selling some coconut water and other refreshments nearby, and the view of the sunset was pretty nice from here.
Overall, maybe it’s great to stop by once if you have time to smell the roses and appreciate the meaning behind this monument. Otherwise, I don’t think it makes sense if you don’t appreciate it respectfully — it seems like some of the tourists here didn’t even understand what this was, other than it literally being the «southernmost part of the US.»

Simple marker that draws a ton of tourists for pictures all around the clock
We have walked by it early in the morning, during the day and even kind of late at night and there has always been a fairly long line to take a picture of yourself with the brightly colored buoy marker.
But I can say I have been to the far south now. :)

Definitely a must see in Key West, but there’s really only one thing to do here — take a picture of this nuke-​looking buoy.
Reasons why this is such a tourist trap:
* Street parking only ($ 1 per hour), but you are not going to spend more than 30 minutes here.
* You’ll have to wait in line for 10 ~ 15 minutes JUST to take pictures (absolutely free) and the guy behind me jokingly said, «I’ll charge you $ 20 for taking pictures.» Heck, I didn’t even have to wait in line when I took pictures of the Cloud Gate in Chicago!
* Tour buses constantly stopped right in front of the attraction for a good minute or so and it was really annoying (not to mention these buses clogged traffic).
Well, at least you can say I was 90 miles away from Cuba!

It is within a walking distance from the other attractions in Key West. I didn’t take any pictures here as I didn’t think it was anything outstanding.
The drive to Key West during a sunny day was much more impressive and stunning.

Ein großer, bunt angemalter Pfosten, der den kürzesten Weg nach Kuba markieren soll und der nicht mal an der richtigen Stelle steht. Also wenn ich ehrlich bin, nenne ich sowas nicht Sehenswürdigkeit. Dennoch haben sich Massen an Amerikanern in die Schlange eingereiht, Wartezeit war etwa 30 Minuten, um sich dort fotografieren zu lassen. Wir haben uns das erspart, hatten aber dann sogar Schwierigkeiten, den Souternmost Point ohne Touristen zu fotografieren.
Home of the Sunset ist auch Quatsch, da die Sonne auf der anderen Seite der Insel untergeht — was übrigens tatsächlich sehr sehenswert ist.
Angepriesen durch den Reiseführer war dies mit Sicherheit die größte Enttäuschung der Reise, ein etwas dickerer Pfosten — suuper… Und dann gilt das auch noch als Pflicht-​Urlaubsmotiv für alle Amerikaner, die nach Key West kommen. Echte Begeisterung wollte da nicht aufkommen. Das muss man definitiv nicht gesehen haben… Da war das andere Schild, «Mile 0 — Das Ende der Route 1 — deutlich interessanter. Und da stand keine Schlange davor.
So eine Touristenfalle habe ich wirklich selten gesehen. Drum herum haben sich natürlich die Straßenverkäufer aufgebaut und verkaufen überteuert Getränke. Für mich ist das dann doch alles sehr fragwürdig…

Ponto mais ao sul nos EUA, cerca de 90 milhas de Cuba. Não fui tirar foto ao lado do marco, mas prepare-​se para fila as vezes. Embora chamem de ponto continental mais ao Sul nos EUA, não bem correto já que as Keys são ilhas, em minha opinião, e há um ponto militar sem acesso a civis mais ao sul, então é o ponto turístico mais ao sul que se pode visitar, nada demais.

Touristenmagnet, ja, aber wenig schön oder eindrucksvoll. Ist halt ejne bunte Bojenformige Steinmasse auf der steht wie weit es bis nach Kuba ist. Ich würde mich da nicht für ein Foto anstellen.

Der Southernmost Point wird als südlichster Punkt der USA bezeichnet und liegt in Key West am Ende der Whitehead Street. Der tatsächlich südlichste Punkt liegt allerdings auf der benachbarten Militärbasis.
Auf dem Weg von unserem Hotel kreuzten wir die Duval-​Street und konnten die hübschen Häuschen bewundern.
Ich denke dieser bunte Steinklotz ist auch der meistfotografierte Ort in den USA. Von hier sind es dann nur noch 90 Meilen nach Kuba. Wir mussten uns in die Warteschlange einreihen, um die Fotos zu schießen und wurden auch noch von überaus hilfsbereiten Amerikanern fotografiert. In der Saison bilden sich zeitweise enorm lange Warteschlangen und man sollte dann abwägen, ob es nicht wichtigere Besuchsziele gibt.
Wer etwas abgelegen wohnt kann auch im Rahmen einer Stadtrundfahrt mit dem Conch Train dort einen Stopp einlegen.
Ich fand es unspektakulär aber es gehört eben einfach zum Besuch von Key West. Eine schöné Erinnerung und umsonst. Von dort kann man einen Bummel über die schöné Duval Street starten.

Auch ein Punkt den man in key West besuchen muss. Manchmal ist die Wartezeit allerdings länger, schließlich wollen alle ein Foto vom südlichen Ende von den USA.
