Makena Stables offers quality horseback riding tours to Maui residents and visitors. Specializing in small groups of riders, maximum six per day and excellent quality horses, we ride through the wild ranch lands of Ulupalakua Ranch on the south slop of Haleakala on the island of Maui. The trail rides offer beautiful views of La Perouse Bay and Ahihi Kinau Natural Area Reserve along shoreline and mountain trails of the private ranch lands. Climbing upwards along amazing lava fields we stop for a break at Kalua O Lapa, the vent of the most recent eruption from Haleakala. Our family-​run business of 30 years, continues under the quality management of our head wrangler, Christine R., who also competes in rodeos and trains horses. With her extensive knowledge of the history of the area, excellent horsemanship and aloha, she excels at offering guests the best possible trail riding experience on Maui.

History

Established in 1983.

Founded by Pat and Helaine Borge, Makena Stables has been a family run business from the start. Pat is a 3^rd generation local Maui born cowboy, who’s love of his island home and horses inspired Makena Stables. Together Pat and Helaine raised and trained many of the original horses, breeding and training young horses to use on the ranch and also competing in local rodeos. They agreed to offer trail riding only if they could provide the quality and care for their horses as well as any private owned horse. Building a reputation for consistent quality horses and rides with genuine aloha for their guests they have continued for the past 30 years.

Now the tradition continues under the «amazing, awesome, etc» Christine Rose, who is head wrangler and working manager of the stables. Pat still trains horses and competes with Christine in rodeos, but has retired from the trail rides, leaving them in Christine’s capable hands. She carries on the tradition with her own unique style and grace.

Manager

Originally from California, Christine has been with Makena Stables for over 7 years. She is an excellent horse trainer and rider. Competing in team roping events as a heeler and also in occasional barrel racer, she loves the Maui rodeo scene. She shares her genuine love of the horses and Maui with all our guests and has a wonderful ability to teach western riding skills to the novice and beginner riders in the groups.
