Specialties
Maui West Coast Swing is focusing on building up the dance scene on Maui. Partner dancing can simply be a way to socialize and meet new people, or it can be an outlet to test ones abilities. WCS is a dance fiercely bases on connection and communication with ones partner. Not only are we responsible for our foot placements, but on how that affects our partner as well. It can bring a surprising amount of insight into our own personality and characteristics, as well as that of others around us.
At Maui West Coast Swing we look to progress out current students to the next level of technique and connection, and we look to attract new dancers to come and join us. The more the merrier! WCS is an incredible blend of structure and character.
We have visiting Champion level dancers who visit throughout the year and help our isolated scene blossom and bloom for the dancers to reach their potential.
Above all, we look to create a friendly environment where people don’t have to be afraid of judgement or harsh critiques. We are built out of community, and look to help each other as that helps us all.
Come join us and see what the fuss is all about. :-)
History
Established in 2013.
Maui West Coast Swing was started last year by Christopher Chung, a dancer from New York. He moved to Maui for work and wanted to use his passion for West Coast Swing to help the dancers of Maui. Being so isolated, Maui has struggled to get and keep instructing dancers to help grow the scene in numbers and in talent. Chris has managed to do both, and organized for Champion level dancers to teach on the island.
As his contract through work ended, Chris moved off island. Just prior to his departure, Natalie moved on island and assisted in the weekly classes. She has now taken over Maui West Coast Swing and runs weekly classes in Kihei.
Meet the Business Owner
Natalie L.
Business Owner
Natalie is originally from California, and arrived on Maui in March of 2014. She has been dancing since she was 5. She took her first ballet class at that age and never turned back. Her love of ballet led her to join the dance program at her high school, where she tried her hand at jazz and modern dance. It wasn’t until University that she was introduced to partner dancing.
Being a fan of jazz music, she took to Lindy Hop with a passion. However, her studies took her abroad for a year and a half where her dancing took a pause. When she returned to California she decided to try West Coast Swing. Due to all her ballet training, West Coast Swing came easily to her. She was fortunate enough to have very close friends and Champion level dancers take her under their wing and train her.
Along side her passion for dance is her passion for travel. While in Australia she taught many workshops and assisted in classes. She is now ready to share her passion and training with the Maui community.
