Specialties
The Pit Surf Shop is houses the largest selection of surfboard and skimboards on the Outer Banks and has been keeping folks looking good, in and out of the water, since 1994!
From 1999 through 2014, The Boardriders’ Grill (adjacent to The Pit Surf Shop) was a casual surf-themed restaurant and nightspot specializing in burrito-wraps and known for a busy Taco Tuesday. In 2015, in partnership with Booty Treats Ice Cream & Shave Ice, the space will continue to have Teen Nights on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays in season as well as be available for special events and catering.
History
Established in 1994.
The Pit started out in a little shack on the beach road in 1994, the classic pipe-dream of two surfers trying to stay at the beach year-round and dodge getting real jobs. Chasing that dream, Ben & Steve set out to create a surf shop that was friendly and unintimidating, and a place where you could just «hang out».
In 1996, The Pit made like a hermit crab and expanded into a bigger shell, a run-down log cabin on the big road. Then, in 1999, they built a «cozy» kitchen in the tiny former porch and introduced Cali-style, two-handed burrito wraps to the Outer Banks. 2000 saw the addition of a full scale venue downstairs from the grill, and the construction of a huge retail building to house the surf shop in style on the back of the lot.
2015 brought the move away from alcohol and daily food and toward ice cream and shave ice under the Booty Treats brand, while continuing a long tradition of offering Teen Nights during the summer!
