Keefer’s Inn

We were in a private plane and had to stop at the airport in King City due to weather on our way to Watsonville Airport. Stranded, we called the nearest hotel. What we really wanted to do was get to our car in Watsonville. The nice family that runs the hotel offered to drive us to Watsonville. While we did not stay at the hotel, we can say that the family that owns the hotel was accommodating and very nice. Happily paid them for taking care of us. It should be noted that if you are private pilot, this hotel will pick you up. Thank you for your help!

They need to renovate.
They’d probably make more money.
Carpets are pretty dirty

Pros:
1. Check in swift.
2. password for wi-​fi written on key card holder at check in. Free, but spotty.
3. Every thing looked clean.
4. Remote for heater/​air conditioner. Has a timer. See cons.
5. Nice big screen tv with lots of channels, including Food network.
6. Valet, ironing board and iron in closet area. Hair dryer in bathroom. Nice big basin sink. Complimentary soaps and shampoo.
7. Huge fridge in room. Microwave also in room.
8. Diner on site.
9. Ice machine that worked. See cons.
10. «Continental» breakfast.
11. Pool and hot tub.
12. Soda machine. Prices ranged from .75 to $ 2.50.
13. Couple of envelopes and a memo pad in room with Keefer Inn info card.
14. Very reasonable room rate for 2 queens.
15. Clock in room.
16. There is a single computer next to breakfast area for guests. I believe there is a printer attached.
Cons:
1. Carpet and chairs stained. Not necessarily dirty, just unsightly.
2. Not easy to connect to wi-​fi, had to go the old fashioned way (computer, network, connect to network… etc) then supply password. Spotty connection. Even tho the computer says I’m connected, «unable to locate server» was a frequent page response.
3. No card in room to explain how to operate air with the remote. Not a big issue, had to get up and do it. It does have a timer which is cool when you want to sleep and don’t want to get up to turn it off.
4. Had to call the office for instructions to get tv to work. No card in room to tell you how to do it.
5. Website says coffee maker in room. Not in ours. See additional notes below.
6. Microwave door stuck. Needed two hands. One for the button, one to pull on top of door to get it open. Might be the button that’s kind of broken.
7. Door to ice machine very heavy.
8. Door to room stuck. Had to push hard to get it open.
9. Website says «room service». NOT. The diner has carry out service, but they will not deliver. They really need to fix the website.
10. In room menu for the diner would be nice. What does it take to make 42 plain copies and staple them together. What if I did want carry out? Would have been nice to know what to order.
11. Computer table damaged, door frame to bathroom damaged, and mis-​matched paint around the toilet paper holder.
Ok, so complimentary bk is from 6 — 10 am. So 6:10 or so I go to see about the coffee pot issue. Door locked. No coffee brewing, no juice. Cereal in containers. No milk for cereal. Go back to room. 6:20 now, called office. Phone rang forever. Female with accent finally answers. I ask if coffee pot supposed to be in room. She says yes. That’s it. Nothing else. I ask for coffee maker. She asked me the time, I tell her. She says «Oh, I overslept». She says she’ll make the coffee in the office. I’m done and mad. Not going back over there. About 6:40 knock on door. Lady brings up two cups and creamer. I don’t drink it, but wifey is happy. She tells me the pot for this room somehow got broken. Now she tells me. Nice she walked it over tho.

This place was conveniently located near the freeway, gasoline station, fast food, and a Safeway. If you need a place to stay on your way to Monterey or Big Sur, definitely check this place out. They do accept aaa discounts!
Only reason why I’m giving this place a 4 was because the owner was outrageous, in a way it was hysterical. He couldn’t find my information on his system up until I have him a confirmation number, so definitely keep that when you book with them.
Once we got to our room, everything was unplugged, phone, cable box, tv, and light… So we asked the owner if he could help us get the cable working, once he came up he said to us «are you dumb?», I wasn’t sure if he was joking or not, nonetheless it was pretty funny. I would say just don’t take the owner too seriously, he means no harm.
I’m assuming the people who stayed in the room wanted to pull a fast one on us, and the alarm clock went off at midnight, but it was fine with us because we were still up. The jacuzzi was pretty hot, good for a cool night. Overall, I would come here again to stay if given the opportunity to come back up this way.

We found Keefer’s just randomly on the Internet, and we definitely got lucky. Immaculate, tasteful rooms with great shower (what I look for in a hotel room!), and comfy beds.
But far beyond that, the owners are extremely nice people! We had a bit of an emergency that they went FAR above and beyond the call of duty to help us out with– way more than we had any right to expect.
Definitely stay here if you’re ever coming through the area.

I chose this hotel because it wasn’t (as far as I know) a chain and it was about halfway on my journey so I could meander (LA to SF).
It is old fashioned — probably same décor from 80s or earlier, but clean and comfortable and inexpensive. Staff was friendly (clerk who signed me in had some mighty cheesy lines but it was funny, not irritating). Unlike several other reviewers, I was going to say (and still say) GREAT shower pressure unlike yucky SoCal low flow shower heads! This actually stood out as a positive for me! Also noted that unlike some more upscale places I’ve stayed recently, there was a lamp on each side of the king bed and each lamp had an outlet for a cell phone charger. I recently stayed at a $ 315/​night hotel where I had to pull the bed out to find an outlet! :-(so this was much appreciated.
Also so convenient to the freeway. No frills (which is why 4 stars — I save 5 stars for stellar experiences) but it was exactly what I expected and wanted. Good value.
As an aside, had breakfast at the restaurant across the parking lot and it was perhaps the best omelette i’ve ever had!

Wonderful night of sleep! Clean and friendly! We usually only stay at Marriott’s but this was very convenient!

Love the staff. Paid for two nights a situation came up to were i may have needed just one night & they offered to refund the other day if needed. Staff is always smiling and very personable. The rooms have a nice mini fridge, microwave, iron, blow dryer, HD TV, coffee maker.

Great spot off the 101. I hit it on my way up from SoCal after meetings in Coalinga. Took 198 across as I was heading to Mountain View for a morning apt but left to late. Good little restaurant on premise straight shot from the 1950’s.
Rooms clean and HD TV park in front of your room or get one upstairs. In room fridge and Microwave

Nice place to stay for a night. Quiet, clean, firm bed, new refrigerator and continental breakfast included.
Friendly and helpful staff. Only negative comment is that the water pressure in tbe shower needs to improve. I would stay here again
The restaurant attached is expensive, mediocre and pretty empty most of the time. We were the only ones in the place. Try somewhere else.

This was a nice roadside gem. Very personable and kind «inn-​keeper» greeted me after I decided to pull off and finish my drive in the morning. Nice size room and a comfortable bed and nice linens. Big flat screen television with free wifi and a nice array of cable channels. Fridge with freezer and microwave. A curved out shower curtain and great water pressure. made for a nice shower. Breakfast of fresh fruit (including apples from the owner’s tree) hot and cold cereal, danish and coffee. It was quiet and I slept well. The owners have paid attention to detail and it makes for a much nicer experience than you’ll get from your average roadside inn.

If you can, continue driving to Paso Robles or Salinas 50 miles north or south. If you must stay in King City, then this is ok. Shower had no pressure. I am working in town for a while and bring towels from home, just put it that way

This hotel is truly a gem. Great quality for a great price. I found this hotel by coincident. Tired and wanting a place to settle in for the night, I looked up hotels near me and based on ratings I chose Keefers. I’m glad I did. Clean, great bed, fridge with micro doesn’t get any better than this. Only thing I was frighten about was that we got the last room in the building… kinda scared.

This is the gem on the way to Pinnacle NP.
Big room, clean and cheap. Good quality of the bathroom supply items. Very nice staff/​owner.
The big refrigerator is great ! Although the breakfast items are not fancy, we really appreciate the efforts of the owner.

AWESOME customer service!!! Old style, but clean and friendly. B-​fast and coffee included. Its an old-​time traveller’s hotel and a good choice for a road trip stop.

What a pit!!! The one star is for the fact that they tried. They really did try. Sadly, this hotel/​motel is not a good place to stay. There was no security lock on the door. I brought my own sheets and used them on EVERYTHING! All the furniture was stained. This hotel/​motel needs a facelift! The pillows were so old they had no fluff left. The «free continental breakfast» was bananas, apples, cereal in Tupperware, and some gross Danish pastries from Costco. Needless to say, we drove to Starbucks! The workers, who appeared to be a family, were nice. I think the worst part for me aside from the stained furniture was the fact that when we checked in, we were given keys to our room but when we walked in, the room was filthy from the people who had it before us. Yuk!!! That’s gross! You are all probably wondering why I was even here. Well, my aunt lives in King City and she had more people than usual for thanksgiving so we offered to stay at a hotel. Next time, I will sleep on the floor at my aunts, if necessary!

Clean rooms, quiet. The room had microwave, coffee machine, refridge. The best cable channel selection I’ve seen at a hotel. We will definitely make this our regular stop. Restaurant in the parking lot had good breakfast, sorry I can’t remember the name but it’s the only one. The Indian lady who checked us in was very pleasant and helpful. Nice place, highly recommended.

Perfect place to sleep if you want to do a day of bicycling around Lake San Antonio (along with lots of people training for the Wildflower). Reasonable price, clean room, run by a friendly Indian couple. Also a popular staging point for trips to Pinnacles National Park.

First off this is probably really a 3 star accommodations, but the staff and their willingness to bend over backwards bumps it up. Is there a nicer place to stay in King City? Probably not. Some folks I worked with stayed at the nearby Days Inn and they were much more excited to be done with work and able to leave than I was.
The rooms are relatively clean and spacious. The fridge and microwave are nice. I did find a few hairs in the bathroom but also found them at some Marriott properties I stayed at before and after.
Did you know Keefer’s has a fitness center? They have an agreement with a gym about 8 minutes away. That is above and beyond expectations. The owner even offered to give me a ride over.
Wifi is decent. I’ve had better and worse, but I did keep losing the signal.
I stayed on the second floor, but in hind sight I might have preferred an exterior door on the ground floor. The owners do a great job with what they have and very much want to improve and welcome constructive feedback. The fact that they offer a continental breakfast and have a gym arrangement I take as proof. There were not many signatures of folks sent over by Keefer’s at the gym, so either people are not there long enough to use a gym, or just don’t read the information in the roomand know it is listed as an amenity.
I first was going to stay at nearby Fort Hunter Liggett where I was working. If you are working on post, I’d rather stay at Keefer’s than what I saw of post lodging. If I were in the area for one night passing through, I’d stay again. Nothing against Keefer’s, but next time I’d probably stay further away and deal with the drive if I’m there for a few days. King City is just not my kind of town. The nearby Safeway is arguably the friendliest staff of any Safeway I have been too though.
The beds were surprisingly comfortable. Better than many, many other hotels I have stayed in.

I stayed at Keefer’s in twice in the last 7 days — on the night of my wedding as a rest stop between our final destination and two nights on the way home a week later to take a quick break before resuming our drive. We checked in super late on both Saturdays with no problem and we were even given a complimentary bottle of a yummy Riesling because we were on our honeymoon. The husband joked around with us and even stopped to talk with us before we left (just as he was running errands. His wife was the one at the actual check out counter) and his wife gave us a fun suggestion of a great driving route if we wanted to do a day trip. They also upgraded us to King rooms both nights. The rates are very reasonable and the accommodations are better than what I expected.
Only smallish downsides: They give 3 – 4 pillows but I would bring a few from home for extra comfort because they could use a little more fluff — but i’m a pillow lover — and the water pressure was ok, but not great.
Those are the biggest quibbles I have, and they’re SO small. You’re not going to find a better way to stop while travelling on the 101. Just book ‘em :D
