To fulfill our mission, we:

— Publish easy-​to-​read books, and teacher manuals

— Organize an annual continuing education health literacy conference

— Offer health literacy rewrite/​redesign and original writing and graphic design service

— Evaluate your patient education materials and communications (field testing with focus groups and one-​on-​one interviews)

— Sponsor and administer the health literacy discussion list

— Run the La Habra Family Resource Center

— Help residents of Orange County, California, sign up for health insurance

History

Established in 1993.

The Institute for Healthcare Advancement (IHA) is a California 501©(3) nonprofit, charitable organization with a dedicated mission of empowering people to better health. Founded in 1993, IHA is a direct creator and publisher of easy to read and easy to use self-​help health care books and a recognized expert in health literacy issues. More than 4 million copies of IHA’s initial book, «What To Do When Your Child Is Sick» have been sold with more than half of these to State Departments of Health, managed care organizations and head start programs across the country. IHA provides consultation, training, and review and revision of health information services to numerous health plans, hospital systems and other organizations throughout the country. IHA founded and ran the Friends of Children Health Center, now Friends of Family Health Center, for over a decade until they became a standalone Federally Qualified Health Center in 2012.
