The Dapper Dog grooming specializes in Poodles, Terriers, Toy breeds and Retrievers. Truly uneqqualed in the beach area for grooming winning showdogs. Breed specific haircuts a specialty.

NO NOISY dryer called a force air dryer is used. Towels are washed on the premises with non-​allergen laundry soaps. Towels never re-​used. Each dog also gets a fresh towel to stand on while on the grooming table instead of standing on ribbed rubber. NO NOOSE is used on the dogs or cats.

Over-​sized pens for all size dogs. Walk-​in shower makes this very spa-​like for the pets. Anesthesia-​free teeth cleaning available by the region’s top technician.

History

Established in 1974.

The family founded the first pet grooming/​boarding facility in Central Pennsylvania (1946 – 1971 near Dauphin, PA) and Julie was a big help to her grandmother as a youngster enjoying bathing and kennel duties.

Julie opened Tiara Kennels in 1974 near Newville, PA on her mother’s property and with her mother assisting, Julie was able to be on the road often, successfully showing Standard Poodles.

In 1985, Julie married and moved here to the beach with two beloved Standard Poodle showdogs. That fall, she began working as the exclusive groomer for veterinarian Dr. Goetze on Drapper Avenue (LJ) and developed a large following. After the doctor’s sudden death, Julie purchased The Dapper Dog (1992) which had been in the same location since the Sixties. Julie added her showdog prefix of Tiara to the name of the business.

On 9−9−99, The Dapper Dog by Tiara opened at its present location. The current location has better parking and a wonderful, small yard for the dogs to utilize.

Passionate about proper care of dogs and cats, Julie Reed gladly shares her knowledge of living flea free naturally, proper canine nutrition and the best coat maintenance products and care for your pet.

In recent times, she was the Bird Rock Community Council Secretary from 1999 through 2002 and has since been the secretary for the San Diego Poodle Club and donates to their rescue fund. Julie also volunteers as a conformation instructor from time to time for the Obedience Training Club of San Diego County. She and her husband show a very successful set of Standard Poodle showdogs and the line has produced top winners & pets for people around the world.

Julie works to educate about important legislation affecting pet ownership and she is a volunteer with Noah’s Wish, an emergency response organization for animals.

I purchased a standard poodle puppy as a pet from Julie. The puppy had a vaginal infection when I took her home; Julie just told me to keep it clean and it would be fine. Well, I ended up paying over $ 400 in vet bills to get that cleared up.
I think Julie breeds good poodles; our puppy has a very good temperament, I like her size and she’s a nice poodle. But Julie is really quite difficult to deal with. It took us ten months to get our AKC papers from Julie, despite months of promises to deal with this; Julie will not give you the paperwork to file, she insists on registering the entire litter at once. AND, my puppy’s name is incorrect on the paperwork, so I have to deal with the AKC to get it corrected.
I really don’t feel the lack of cooperation from other owners not providing Julie with names for their puppies is my problem. She has so many rules and paperwork, surely she can just insist that she name the puppies of each litter herself. When I finally contacted the Poodle Club of San Diego, and sent yet another request for this paperwork to Julie, I got a Facebook message basically telling me to stop bugging her. This is really unprofessional and uncalled for. If she had acted professionally and completed the paperwork for this $ 2,900 dog months ago, as promised, I wouldn’t have to ask her for it.
If I had to do it again, I would never consider a Tiara poodle. Which is a shame, because they are very nice dogs. Just rather expensive and you have to deal with a difficult breeder. There are just way too many good breeders out there to have to waste time with this.

I have read the reviews and could not disagree with the negative comments more. I have been taking my Yorkie to Dapper Dog for more than three years. I have never found Julie to be rude or inappropriate. She handles situations in a business-​like manner… she is a business woman after all. I don’t think Julie has a lot of tolerance for people who do not take care of their pets and to that I say «good for her». I don’t either. If you don’t have the time and energy to take care of a pet, you shouldn’t have one and you shouldn’t expect someone like Julie or any other groomer to take an unkept animal and make them look like they just stepped out of a spa. If your dog is a mess and hasn’t been groomed or brushed in months, I thnk you should get what you get. My dog loves Julie and Duke and since he doesn’t really like anyone but me, that is saying lots. He gets excited and can not wait to get to the shop to see her when I put him in the car and tell him we are going to see Julie. He goes to Dapper Dog once a month and I have never had a complaint about his grooming. She treats him with the same love and affection she shows her own dogs and she has some of the most beautiful and sweet tempered dogs I have ever seen. I feel very lucky to have found Julie and the Dapper Dog by Tiara. I wouldn’t have to drive to La Jolla for a groomer. There are many much closer to my home but my dog is family and he only gets the best. That’s why I take him to Julie at Dapper Dog.

Unprofessional, unholistic, unbalanced, and meh… grooming.
I had read the reviews from people who thought that Julie is rude but decided to give Dapper Dog the benefit of the doubt since there were some favorable reviews here too. Plus, I noticed that she had responded to a review saying that she was perfectly reasonable with reasonable people. I consider myself to be a relatively reasonable person so…
Mistake.
Wow. Julie is a piece of work. Imagine the looniest, angriest handler from Best in Show and you won’t come close. I can take a lot and I get that we’re not all 100% all the time. But seriously, Julie takes angry and insulting to the next level. There’s no need to take a misunderstanding and crucify the customer over it. And then there’s no need to make it personal. I’m honestly embarrassed for her. Her behavior was not appropriate, it wasn’t warranted, and it certainly wasn’t professional. Dogs pick up on attitude, I’m sure this kind of negativity can’t be a good experience for them.
Not to mention she didn’t do a very good job of grooming. Sorry I didn’t have an AKC Standard Poodle, maybe then she’d have bothered.
This lady thinks she’s the Queen of England, not a dog groomer. And even Her Royal Highness wouldn’t dream of talking to a stranger this way. I wish I could give her a negative star rating. Consider yourself warned.

There’s the «she must have had a bad day» kind if rude, and then there’s stark raving mad, mean, inflammatory, and insulting rude. As a paying customer, I expect neither from the proprietor. Apparently, that’s too much to ask of Julie.
She uncorked an irrational can of bee itch on my girlfriend today the likes of which I’ve rarely seen.
Save yourself the emotional trauma and go to a professional service.

Its good place dont let the «rude» reviews put you off — not what I saw or heard. They are pros. We just had super experience here with our havanese — a great cut (not too much off, but thorough), high quality shampoo and smell, cleaned up his eyes, ears, feet, etc too. Dog treat (lamb) was nice touch. And the store + back room area is pleasant and small, friendly which is better for our dog who hates loud noise of any kind. We will be back–

We first started visiting the Dapper Dog after deciding to feed our dog a better diet. Through her experience with animal grooming and research into the best foods on the market, Julie was able to make several recommendations that greatly improved our dog’s coat and improved the quality of her life.
The Dapper Dog does cater to specific breeds and is aimed more at the professional show dog world, but one thing La Jolla does not want for is dog groomers. The Dapper Dog definitely has the best researched selection of holistic, high grade food in the area.

The owner of this business is rude and obnoxious. I went in to discuss food & grooming options for my dogs and she was a complete arse.
Zero class, zero business sense, zero hope… zero, the times I’ll bring my business there. All About Animals just up the street knows all about customer service and they do excellent grooming.

I brought my dog there and immediately thought they were overpriced, but really wanted my dog groomed that day. She was not gentle with my dog and it showed in her condition afterward. She came back with bumps all over her skin from being nicked and irritated. Her leg was cut and she was in so much pain it had to be wrapped. One of her nails was also cut so short that when I put her in the car I noticed it was still bleeding. My dog use to love being brushed and now when we try to brush her, she takes off running. Very unfortunate :(
