Jaylin is AMAZING. He’s a hair genius! I came to him 2 months before my wedding. Let me tell you how he changed my hair’s life! I had gotten a terrible dye job from ANOTHER salon. I’d asked for light blonde with highlights … I got dark brown with one highlight! :(I found Jaylin and my hair was BEYOND gorgeous in only ONE sitting. I amazingly had blonde bombshell hair with tons of highlights! He has completely transformed my hair. And his haircuts last for months! I adore his positivity and will never go anywhere else!

Min gave me such a fantastic haircut — I have medium length to long hair and she gave me a dry cut, which allowed me to leave the salon looking like a million bucks. Before this I would only go to Helmut in LA, but this was even better. So glad I found this place. The ambiance is perfect, and I look forward to coming back to have Min cut my girlfriend’s hair.

This 2^nd review is long overdue. It’s been about ²¹⁄₂ years since I first walked into this salon in need of a color correction (Jaylin transformed my «orangey» hair to a beautiful, rich brown).
And, I’m happy to say that I am just as thrilled with his work as I was back then. I come in regularly for my haircut and color and leave pleased with both every time.
Jaylin is a true master of his trade combining artistry and the utmost precision. Yes, I am impressed that he works with top designers at New York Fashion Week and Milan, but even more impressive for me is what he does to MY hair. I love that he cuts my hair so that I don’t need to spend time styling and fussing with it. It’s about as wash and go as you can get. And what’s great is that people always think that I’ve spent hours blow-​drying it!

I had my hair cut at Jax and King at the beginning of December it is now the beginning of March. I was super disappointed in how my hair turned out. I am from the Midwest and was visiting family so I made an appointment to have Jaylin cut and color my hair. Jaylin never actually did any work on my hair although the he did give direction. He had some health issues a couple weeks prior so he was trying to take it easy. I would have appreciated knowing so I could have cancelled. I didn’t want to complain but I should have walked out.
The goal for my hair was low maintenance and natural. What I got was far from either. The color (balayage sombre) was brassy yellow toward the ends. Wherever it is yellow, it is now dry and splitting like crazy. The Keratin treatment made my hair stick flat to my head and I had to start washing it daily because it starting getting so greasy by the end of the day. I was able to go a few days between shampoos before the keratin. To top it off the color or the Keratin fried a chunk off the front. I was never able to simply let it dry as I was told would be possible because of all the damage. The cut took off a lot of the length in back but in reality was just a boring trim that leaves my hair awkwardly hanging.
I am not someone to write bad reviews but after emailing Jax and King and not receiving a response I decided to give others a warning.

I’ve been on a quest to become an Asian blonde the last few years, and I admit I have gone through a couple of stylists. Finicky? Perhaps, but a gal deserves to have a good hair day nearly every day! Once Jaylin did his magic, I knew I’ve found a permanent home. Jaylin is a master at his craft, and he stays informed of all the latest, modern trends.
My biggest hair goal is to be a blonde without the brassiness and warmth in the color, which often accompany dark, pigmented hair such as mine. I understand that this can’t be done overnight — that it’s a journey, but I want to see progress with each salon visit, and Jaylin certainly achieves that. Somehow, he’s able to create a natural look with a typically unnatural color for an Asian person!
Jaylin’s hair cuts are also amazing. I have stick-​straight hair, which I used to have to curl if I wanted something less ho-​hum. Not anymore: he worked with my hair texture and expertly added layers where needed, so that all I have to do is spray on a texturizing product and off I go!
Jax & King is a top-​notch salon. I feel like I am visiting close friends every time I go.

I completely trust Carla with my hair, she always looks out to do all processes with the least damage to my hair, I know that she really tries to make sure you I am happy with the results. Love the small setting of the salon, very cozy and personal, overall a great experience at Jax & King in La Jolla :)

I have been coming to Jay and Paul now I think over two years. They know hair, believe me. Jay saved my hair from an imminent haircut from a bad job done at another salon. He is a great colorist and Paul his husband comes regularly from the Vancouver salon I love the way he cuts my hair. They are super nice people too. Love to go there always get out feeling oh so pretty.

I had my service done by Carla and I absolutely love my hair! I asked for a grayish color and she totally achieved it. I also love the cut! I have straight hair And most people make my hair very choppy looking but I love the way mine was cut! And what I loved most about Carla was that she was realistic about the color and how my hair will take to it. Most places I’ve gone to don’t tell me anything about after care and how long the color would last. I am diff going to go back to Carla when I need a touch up. Happy customer!

I met Jaylin and Tanya recently at a ramen place and they were so nice. We talked about their salon location in La Jolla, and they suggested I come by. By the next week I was coming in to have a top model makeover. First of all I have coarse 4a/​4b curls that hit my bra strap. Once you get to a certain level in hair length, you get stuck with certain styles: a bun or a ponytail. Anything else on my curly hair would feel like a small dog was just resting there. I had worn weaves and wigs that were a shorter bob length and was yearning for my real hair to be that length.
I show up to J&K, the décor is AMAZING. A mix of industrial, forest, uptown style that I immediately vibed with and incredible hospitality. I honestly had no idea what I wanted to do with my hair, but I knew I wanted it shorter. Jaylin set up the entire itinerary for my makeover. A keratin treatment for more convenience, a one length robert (long bob), and a golden glaze that complimented my natural hair color.
Pary handled my keratin treatment and all the blow drying of my massive mane. Honestly, she the real MVP cause my stuff is not easy! After a wash, long keratin treatment, blowdry, and flat iron my hair was soooo straight. I was amazed. She really knows what she’s doing, and I am most definitely coming back to her!
Next was Santiago, who also has amazing hair. Santi gave me a laser A-​line cut that was so incredible to watch. Paired with the techno music, I thought I was getting my hair done in TRON or something. It was like Soon Siki was cutting my hair! He was the best. I’m making my boyfriend go to him from now on! His last hair cut saw someone waaaay too scissor happy. Def get your hair cut by him. And thank you Santi.
After this, Pary put a glaze over my hair and washed it. When it was time to blowdry, it was so easy to work with and SOFT; my God, it’s soft. No lie, it feels like baby hair, and it sooo much healthier. Later Santi came back and styled my hair. I swear he gave me that secret agent hair I’ve always wanted!
Anyway, I am extremely grateful to the entire team at J&K. They really fixed my life and set the tone for me to be more motivated to do… everything really! Pary and Santi, thank you thank you thank you! PLEASE hit them up if you’re looking for you life to be fixed! And go to Jax and King right now! Go! Go right now!

I was a bit weary to write this review and I called the salon before I came on here. I was looking for a new salon after I was left a little disappointed with my last cut and I was really excited after reading reviews! I looked up the price list online and saw that a woman’s cut was «$ 60 and up» I was fine with this price. I figured it wouldn’t be too much more than the posted amount and if it would be the website says «STYLIST’S PRICES VARY AND MAY BE BASED ON THE AMOUNT OF HAIR + TIME. PRICES MAY CHANGE AS OUR STYLIST ADVANCE IN THEIR LEVEL OF EDUCATION BUT WE HOPE TO GIVE YOU AS MUCH ADVANCED NOTICE OF PRICE INCREASE AS POSSIBLE.»
Onto the salon experience, everything was fine up until I was charged $ 125 for a basic layered haircut. I was shocked. My stylist didn’t mention any increase when I booked this cut when I had my bangs trimmed with her 5 days prior. I just find it pretty shocking that my cut could be more that double what is listed on their published price list with no notice/​communication. Needless to say, I am super disappointed.

I enjoyed pampering and «hair therapy» at Jax & King in La Jolla. It’s pricey, but I’m worth it. And my fine, fragile hair needs help. Tanya massaged my head when she washed my hair! Ooooh I melted into my glass of white wine. Yes, they offered me a complimentary drink… I chose a glass of white wine.
I need a no-​fuss hair style. I just get up, comb and go. Tanya listened well and gave me a cut that was appropriate for my hair. She also gave me tips on how to wash my scalp instead of tangling up my hair. (Normally I rip out half my hair during the process of washing, conditioning, and combing.) Tanya’s tip worked, along with the shampoo & conditioner that she recommended, which I bought at Jax & King.
I bought the Kevin Murphy «Angel Rinse» and «Angel Wash» for my fine hair. Works better than any product I’ve been able to purchase anywhere else. And it doesn’t make my scalp itch. I have a sensitive scalp, and this product is sulfate-​free.
I loved this place so much that I’d like to return to try something more daring for me… maybe a streak of red or purple in my hair. My little granddaughter says I should try pink!
If you have a special occasion, this is a great place for you to make an appointment. I highly recommend it.

I would give more stars if possible. This is a small, boutique salon where Jaylin and his team create amazing art. The interior is rich and warm. You feel like you’re sitting in a cozy library surrounded by your favorite books. You may not immediately notice, but there are no mirrors on the walls. Jaylin explained to me that clients will pick themselves apart while staring into a mirror for hours. The experience is ruined by too much self criticism. I had never thought about that until my first session sans mirror. It was so relaxing to not stare into a mirror for a few hours.
They carry and use both Kevin Murphy and Kerastase. Jaylin has assembled a great team of upcoming stylists. Not only is Jaylin hands on with his clients, he is constantly teaching his team at the same time. While listening to him talk about his craft, you realize how much experience he has. Every little detail is important when it comes to your style, your color, your cut. Before your first appointment begins, there is a detailed conversation between you and Jaylin. He tailors your appointment to your lifestyle and how much maintenance you care to have between appointments.
For me, my hair is an investment. I only want the best products and people touching it. That’s why I go to Jax&King. I get exactly what I pay for. :)

So disappointing. After reading all the great reviews, I called and requested an appointment with Jaylin on Sunday September 20. The man who answered (who was not friendly and sounded annoyed that my phone dropped the call once) told me that the next appointment with him was a few weeks away but that all the stylists have been trained by him. I thought that sounded good and agreed to an appointment for Saturday September 26 at 12:30 with Amy.
I showed up and one of the two stylists tells me there is no record of me or my appointment. What?! She then asks me if I want to reschedule — no thanks. I needed it specifically for today. And then she tells me they’ll contact me.
Wait…I thought they did not have any information on me… I was really looking forward to a great experience and having my hair updated before a very important work event. I’m really surprised and disappointed that a place with these types of high reviews would treat a customer like this.

I can’t begin to describe the amazing hair experience I had here. I was surprised that I was able to schedule my cut and color with my fellow Thai friend Jaylin a month in advance. He’s extremely popular and I hear that he is now booked 6 months out! Anyway, I had a consultation with Tyler first and then with Jaylin. We decided on a sombre and layered cut. The entire process with cut, color correction (to get rid of the redness from a previous bad coloring experience at Hair Drezzers), soft blonde sombre, and styling took about 5 hours.
In the end, the entire experience and end result is worth the pricy cut and color. My hair has never looked better, especially after having a baby a year ago.

¹⁰⁄₁₀ experience! I had the pleasure of having Tyler dye/​style my hair and he was simply the sweetest. We looked at pictures and talked for about 15 – 20 min before he even started on my hair. I can say for sure that he is not only talented but also pays special attention to the client’s best interest. For my hair, I wanted to go lighter and Tyler did just that with this beautiful sombre. Amazing customer service (w/​complementary drinks and snacks for clients & even able to leave to repark my car) — I definitely will come here again!

I have been seeing Jaylin for over 5 years, thanks to a friend’s recommendation. He has finally opened his own salon in downtown La Jolla. He knows exactly what to do with any type of hair and he is always first to know trendy, current color, cut and styles compared to other salons. The salon has a modern yet relaxed vibe. Jaylin knows exactly what to do with my hair without having to tell him. Each haircut is a work of art and I feel wonderful each time. I love it when I get compliments on my hair months after a haircut. Definitely recommend Jax and King for quality services.

I have been seeing Jay for about a year now and both of my teenage daughters have seen Jay and Amy. They are both fabulous and we love their work.
Our girls wanted to color their hair different shades about every other month and Amy has been great working within their (my) «budget» and making them feel great without overdoing it.
Jay has been great in maintaining my blonde without having to get touchups every other month like I have done in the past. It’s the most natural coloring I have ever had and I love that they use minimal bleach.
They are really just great all around and we love them.

I almost don’t want to share my thoughts about J&K… but if you want the best hair ever… go here! You cannot go wrong with choosing J&K — the folks who work here are simply fabulous — super talented and just amazing. You will come out of this salon looking and feeling oober great.
I would give them (esp my stylist Phavy) infinity stars!
