History

Established in 2004.

In the late 1940s an affluent family named Black purchased a prime parcel of land from the prominent Scripps family in the Southern California coastal village (La Jolla) near San Diego. The Blacks soon turned the nearly ten acres into an equestrian estate and training ground for young thoroughbreds.

Inspired by the rich history of the property, Mustangs & Burros and Estanica La Jolla Hotel & Spa pays homage to the early California rancho-​style setting through architecture, landscape and even cuisine.

Many of the original bricks from the Equestrian estate have been incorporated into Mustangs & Burros and the adjacent Private Event function space called the Caretaker’s Suite– once the Estate Caretaker’s living quarters.

I ordered the fish tacos for take out during my stay at the Estancia hotel. Let’s just say that they were pretty darn terrible. The salsa that came with the tacos was acidic and flavorless. I also ordered chocolate «gelato» that was just chocolate ice cream really. Service was fine.

I’ve been coming to Mustang and Burros for years and have always been a huge fan. So it isn’t lightly that I enter this review. My last 3 visits have been very disappointing. I expect more from a Meritage property. The service has been hit or miss during the last few trips. But last night’s service and food and drink quality was really poor. The mixologist used to be great. Using fresh ingredients. They were cocktails that I could look forward to. I ordered a gimlet last night and specifically requested fresh lime juice but was given Roses instead. The server disappeared for 20 minutes so I didn’t try to swap it out. I also tried the orange tequila drink. Last time I had it. It was served with fresh juices. This time it had a really cheap mixer. Also disappointing were the Mustang Nachos. I live for these nachos. But they were soggy. And everyone who ate them in our party suffered from intense gastro distress at around 3 a.m. I am really bummed and will miss the patio dining.

My favorite after work happy hour. There again tonight for the 500th time in 2 years. :) the staff has always been great and super helpful. Their drink selection is great and definitely get their nachos. Not my go-​to for normal happy hour fare, but their nachos are strangely amazing.
They have Buffalo Trace whiskey, which makes me super happy. :)

The nachos are a meal and not you football game nachos. Tasty chicken, fresh Guac and tomatoes, sour cream and good cheese top these freshly fried chips. Get them to share.
Also the fish tacos are unreal. I was full and ate them anyway. That’s a big deal for a small eater like myself.
Had the chile relleno. Omg! So good.
Peach cobbler. Excellent.
Fireplace is romantic and lovely. Great ambiance.

The food here it is really good. I didn’t give it a 10 because I’ve been to real gourmet restaurants that obviously take the 10. But the food here still amazing. Fish tacos are obscene. And the whole package it is perfect.
Something I realized in this area of La Jolla/​San Diego area is that some fast food restaurants gets 5 stars which I think it is ridiculous if you know about good food. So this place should be a 5 stars. Only ignorant people that doesn’t know about food gives bad reviews in places like this. Trust me on this one. Look for Michelle. She is awesome!!!

So this was maybe my first Unilocal miss informed… This is basically a over rate lounge sorta… Ok so we made reservations thinking it would be a great find. I was excited based on the reviews … Well I have mix reviews … Here it goes …
The table and chairs on the patio are ridiculous if ordering food! Chairs are not comfortable and the table is low. Basically it is a garden table And chairs type of thing.
So by the time I had a water tea and wine no further room in my table… Anyways so Unilocal has talked up the chicken nachos, we ordered them to try. Yea they are huge, yes the flavor is very good, however they where not hot nor was it fancy and worth the price … We did get a bottle of wine Moscato plus points for having my favorite wine … I had the burger and my husband has the fish tacos … The burger was very good and he loves the tacos. I think you are paying for the ambiance and not really the food. The food to me was a little upgrade from room service type of food. The decorations and the man playing the guitar where both amazing … I doubt we will go back since we spent 150 bucks on nachos, burger and tacos, oh and wine … Anyways cute resort that it is located at …

Pulled pork mac and cheese, craft beer, outdoor fire place, attentive wait staff. Wow. I got massive points from the lady for taking her here. Seriously find this hidden gem and take yo date. Its a hotel restaurant, but a delicious and cool hip romantic one. DO IT! AND GET THE PULLED PORK MAC AND CHEESE! Yummmmm. The other pasta dish with sundried tomatoes was decent but the mac n cheese…

I adore this quaint place and the servers are wonderful. The drinks are fantastic and creative. Post up for HH outside on the comfy couch or chairs in front of the fireplace and you’ll be taken to another place. The food is wonderful. The ceviche was so fresh and I love squeezing extra lime on it. The fish tacos were way better than The Brigs! The HH is Mon-​Fri 4 – 6. Ends a bit early so plan on traffic and parking around the area. On Fridays you can get pitchers of beer for $ 22 and Margs for $ 24 with fish taco specials! Their Barrel aged classic caddy is so good! Salt the rim! $ 14 reg price. Tues. HH is Mexi beer and TJ Dogs. I like Thursdays also, margarita HH with empanadas. Great place to unwind. Their spa is also amazing. Couples massages available. Snack int he relaxation room while you wait. WE had a private jaccuzzi just outside of our massage room. It was incredible.

I am such a fan of this resort and restaurant– I had my bachlorette party here, every family member that visits I recommend to stay here etc… That being said I had an awful dinner here last night. We ordered the chips which are normally great but last night were stale and boring. For entrée I ordered the chicken and to be honest I left more than half on my plate and could have gotten better chicken at a drive through. I don’t know what happened! Step it up Estancia– I would love to love you again

The first thing that impresses you simply walking towards the restaurant, if you’re early enough can catch a glass of champagne in the lobby lounge and sit by the fireplace and have conversations with your friends. with that your appetite is ready and off to the restaurant you go. What strikes you at first is how beautiful the pathways are, landscaped elegantly, lighted beautifully. that’s just the beginning of a wonderful experience at a beautiful hidden away restaurant. The staff will accommodate you to all extent ever seen possible. They simply aim to please. And they hit their target every time.

Super glad I was footing the bill for this place! This restaurant is located inside the Estancia Hotel which had a nice rustic feel to it. The food was just average. Honestly nothing to brag about. I ordered the filet which was cooked perfectly, but I just didn’t care for the bean cassoulet or root purée that accompanied the meat. Seemed like their happy hour was decent (for this area) but I was about 5 mins too late to get in on the action. If in the area again I would give their happy hour a try.

Tried this place by myself on a Tuesday night. Service was awful. The wait staff made me feel like I shouldn’t be there. It took forever. I ordered the ahi and it was marginal. Overcooked and lacked flavor. For 28 dollars I was disgustingly disappointed. Only reason they get 2 stars is the décor was nice and outside fire place was great.

I have been to Mustangs and Burros several times. My review is not for dinner though, it’s for drinks and appetizers. I love the atmosphere, especially the outdoor seating by the fireplace. The cocktails have never disappointed & the appetizers are spot on. Very enjoyable for a girls night out or just hanging out.

Stayed at the resort and came here on our 2nd night for dinner
Got the ceviche with shrimp & scallops.
It was delicious and super fresh. Very enjoyable and I feel I know my ceviches pretty well. If anything I could of used more heat (spicy) to it. But no complaints at all!
My partner got the whole wheat penne pasta plate. It came with all kinds of veggies and whole cherry tomatoes. Very good as well & a huge portion. I ate the rest of it at my room later.
Good selection of beer there.
Top thing thou at this place is dessert. We only got the Guava Crème Brûlée but it was off the fuckin hook. Wow. Wow. Wow. I wish we got one of everything off the dessert menu. This place was great.

Sigh, I have mixed feelings about this place. My boyfriend brought me here on a surprise Valentine’s Day escape and had dinner reservations at 8pm. He said he specified that we would be bringing our pup with us (can’t leave her in the hotel room by herself) and they said that it would be fine.
Once we showed up to the place, the hostess said she was unaware that we would be bringing our dog and we had to sit in the back patio because other people are afraid of dogs because they might have rabies or something. I understand that people don’t want dogs around their food but the fact that it wasn’t remembered as a part of his reservation is what bothered me the most. She gave us free chips and salsa for dealing with the situation so that was a plus. Once we sat down, we waited for 20 minutes until my boyfriend went in and got the attention of a waiter. Turns out there was some miscommunication between the staff and they forgot about us. Great. The waiter was very apologetic and gave us our drinks on the house which, again, was a plus. I got a house margarita and my boyfriend got a beer. Both were delicious.
Finally the food. I ordered the Turkey Burger and my boyfriend got the Filet Mignon. My turkey burger was very well cooked and was quite juicy. The flavors really worked together. My boyfriend thorough enjoyed his Filet Mignon. He said if he could have had another one, without spending any $$, he probably would have had 3 more. Guess that guy really liked it :)
Since I didn’t go inside, I’m not really sure what the décor was like. It looked nice from the outside. Needless to say, for the price and the amount of miscommunication that happened, I won’t be back. Their saving grace was that the food was actually pretty good.

Staying at Estancia resort, we decided to dine in instead of hitting the town.
The restaurant itself is a very nicely designed and cozy place. We chose to sit outside and enjoy the late August evening weather.
Drinks arrived promptly and our waitress took order of two slightly different burgers (arguably the simplest item of the menu) and took off.
We didn’t see her again for a good 35 minutes. Apparently the kitchen is located far from the dinning area.
When finally the food came, she offered an apology only after I jokingly asked about a strike in the kitchen.
Now the most important part:
When you pay 16 $ for a cheeseburger with a side of French fries, is it too much to expect a better than fast food chain dry patty?
I had my share of bad burgers throughout my life but this was at least 12 bucks more expensive than the second worst.
Under seasoned dry meat (supposed to be medium) with too much salt on the fries. Not edible. I ate half of it because I was really hungry (usually that’s when everything tastes good) and couldn’t wait another half an hour for something else.
The waitress never cared to ask if we were happy with our meal and just took our half eaten plates out of the way. For some reason she offered a free desert at the end to make our experience less miserable but we didn’t take the chance.
