Citizen Recording is an affordable recording studio in San Diego. We offer professional sound quality at cheap rates. We have a large live /​drum room, spacious control room, comfortable vocal room, two isolated amp rooms, a lounge, bathroom, and storage. Our goal is to offer the best recording quality at affordable, reasonable rates.

History

Established in 2013.

The concepts for Citizen Recording were conceived early in 2011. Patrick Norton is the owner and head engineer. He is an active songwriter & recording artists himself. He strives to keep Citizen Recording an inspirational studio with a warm and creative atmosphere– a place where the citizens of San Diego can record music at affordable rates.

I’ve been involved with music for as long as I can remember. I’ve been writing songs and recording music for nearly 20 years. I’ve been in many bands of different genres such as folk, rock, alternative, indie, hard rock, americana, electronic, blues, jazz, and pop. As a musician, I understand how important your music is to you. I know that quality matters as much as a comfortable and creative atmosphere. I also understand what it is like to work a job and be on a budget. I have worked many different jobs over the years (sales, service, office), while always pursuing a career in music. I spent the last three years building Citizen Recording and transitioning into recording music full-​time. My goal at Citizen Recording is to help musicians actualize their dreams and ideas, and have a great experience doing it! I always strive to be honest, fair, friendly, and helpful. If you have any questions at all, please feel free to contact me — I’d love to hear from you!

Patrick knows Protools and Protools knows Patrick. Book a session and watch Protools bend for him — It’s amazing because I can barely get Protools to turn on. And he’s also a splendid gent to work beside. Thanks again Patrick!
P. S. Bring your own sugar and cream for the coffee because he drinks his black — he’s a straight up kinda guy.

I just recorded my first album with Patrick at Citizen Recording. Before I was even a client, Patrick and I spoke on the phone for about 30 minutes as he described the process to me and made some very valuable suggestions. His counsel was much appreciated, and I felt like he was the guy for the job.
I had a really great experience recording with him, he is clearly competent with the controls, but what I appreciated most was his honesty and time management. If something wasn’t sounding right, he said so and made me sing/​play it again. But if something was fine and I was dwelling on it for too long, he suggested we move on lest we run out of time for the project.
In the end, Patrick finished up his work the day before he got married (and sent me the last track pretty late that night). The dude pulled through for me in a major way.
I would absolutely record with Patrick again, would send my friends to him in a heartbeat, and recommend him without hesitation to you, Unilocal people.
Maybe he’ll bust out the whiskey with you, too.

Before dealing with Patrick and Citizen Recording, I thought that «professional recording» was an oxymoron. I could tell by their Web site that wasn’t going to be the case.
From initial contact and booking through recording session and follow-​up, Patrick has been interested in our project, incredibly responsive, and a true professional. His booking process is as easy as possible (with PayPal) and his studio is a musician’s dream … great equipment, uncluttered, and comfortable.
Patrick devotes 100% of his attention to the work you’re doing on the other side of the glass. His ProTools skills are excellent, and he got just the sound we were looking for with a difficult-​to-​record nylon string piece. Noah was working alongside Patrick that day as well, and they both have excellent ears and suggestions … they’re also patient and dialed in, two important skills.
You absolutely can’t go wrong with Citizen Recording … we’re looking forward to our next sessions there!

This studio is absolutely amazing! I started renting it out for band practices a few months ago and love every minute of it; everything from the design, layout, ambiance, available equipment, etc. makes it a great experience. The only complaint I have is that it’s impossible to get the band to leave… I’m pretty sure most of them would live there if they could!
Another awesome factor is the extensive amount of equipment the studio has and how amazing the owners are at letting you use their gear to get the best sound. The vintage fender rhodes is definitely my favorite.
We’ve enjoyed having practices there and will definitely be recording our album there as well! Best studio in San Diego by far!

Amazing! Recording a song with 5 young boys ages 7 – 13 seemed like it could get pretty hairy. Patrick made it happen within the time scheduled (including all the editing/​mixing that was required), at an amazing studio price point, and our end result was beyond our expectations!
The boys had a lot of fun. Some guys might blow off a project like this, but Patrick took care to give each of the boys a great experience.
My band is definitely going to record our demo here. I was waiting to save up the money, but after looking at his rates on his website (which are clearly posted), I realized how amazingly affordable it will be. I better schedule some time in there quick before San Diego finds out about this!

So, this is it. That studio you and every artist with a regular guys’ budget is looking for, and needs. There’s no BS here. These guys’ website gives priced packages too, not ‘call for a quote’, which is nice to see. Because you’re dealing with a nice, small business, you’ll get time (if you want) to explain your project, your expectations, and goals, and these guys will do everything they can to accommodate you and your project.
Great location, great prices, solid gear, solid rooms, very solid owners. Save money on making CDs, or shirts, but don’t cut cost on your recording. And here, your dollars stretch out for you, so you probably CAN do more with your projects’ budget.

This place has everything that a real player needs to make a serious record. From gear to ambiance and professional staff/​engineering, these guys have it covered. The best part is that somehow, even though they have brilliant engineers and a healthy, impressive resume, they’ve kept themselves from the ‘ego’ that usually comes with a quality product. This is one of the best designed studios I’ve seen, especially for bands who want to record live or play out of multiple amps at once. There are several rooms to record and a big room for drums. The way the rooms are set up allow bands to see each other, play, and have their amps in a closet across the studio.
Patrick gave me and some friends a tour of the place and I’ve recommended him to others. He has a lot of great gear and his set up allows for you to really get any sound you want.
