Super 8 San Diego Area / La Mesa

Probably one of the better hotels we stayed at when travelling in California.
The staff was friendly, the rooms were nice and very clean and the beds were comfortably.
The breakfast was not so good, just doghnuts. Coffe, tea and juice. And some fruit, if you were quick to grab some.
The hotel is located in a very nice area and there are some ok restaurants nearby and close to downtown La Mesa.

Haven’t been here in a couple of years and decided to see if they had a room avail since I was driving down to SD for a party. Since they did, I booked it. The room was spacious and clean. It had a kitchenette that proved to be useful given that I needed a fridge to store groceries for our party in town. The staff was very friendly. It was quiet, beds were comfortable, and wifi worked great. There were plenty of free channels although one didn’t have great reception. But who watches tv anyway…
In the morning the staff, perhaps he was the owner, made excellent recommendations for brunch and also beaches to visit. We ended up at La Mesa Bistro nearby which was excellent. And we drove up to La Jolla Coves which had great snorkeling, swimming, and beautiful coves.
Clean, convenient, friendly, affordable, quiet. Would definitely return!

I stayed here during Comic Con weekend. Everything near the convention center was booked so stayed here. My room was clean and tidy. The only thing was my towels where like sandpaper. Other than that everything was good. The guy at the front desk was nice even the house keepers.

My BF and I stayed the night here last night. We went to see Paramore at the Open Air Theater. We wanted a hotel close by the venue.
I have stayed at multiple Super 8 hotels, and this one was the worst one I have stayed at.
I thought that the lobby was cute and clean. The lobby is the only reason I give it 2 stars.
The room was gross. I did not like how the carpet had stains on it everywhere you looked. There was a weird door by the bedside table closest to the wall. I couldn’t see much, as it did not lift all the way. It made me wonder if the plumbing in the bathroom has problems.
The sheet that was the comforter had tears and a white stain. It would not come off. It was almost like it was dried paint. The blue fleece blanket was also torn and it looked like it had cigarette burns on it. When I got in the actual bed… there was little black rocks everywhere. I had to brush off the bed before I got comfy. The bed was caved in. I kept rolling to the center of the bed. Not fun. If I was not so exhausted after seeing Paramore, I would have slept in the car.
The bathroom looked updated. It was nice. The towels were like sandpaper. So dang scratchy. Bring your own towels, if you can. The tub was metal. That was neat!
The only clock we had was the one the microwave had. Someone must have stollen the bedside alarm clock.
Parking was cool. I liked how you had the option of parking in the cubicles or outside.
Overall, Super 8 is not gr8.

After a booking error at another hotel, my mom (and I) to stayed here recently as she’s in between housing. She is handicapped and they went out of their way to make sure that she is comfortable.
They have been nothing but courteous and caring and seem to genuinely be concerned about their customers. AND the rooms are affordable with microwaves and refrigerators. Breakfast is served in the lobby too. Lots of restaurants nearby for a quick bite…
I will absolutely stay here again!

I did a quick search for «cheap motel» for the area that I was in and this listing came up. I really wasn’t expecting much but I was so pleasantly surprised when I entered my room. The bed looked really comfortable (which it was) and the room was very welcoming.
There was an incident where I requested the room to be cleaned and when I came back from a job, I found that it wasn’t. I called the front desk and I believe the nice lady that answered was the owner of this place. She apologized profusely and said she was not able to move me to a clean room. She asked what I needed and I told her, «I guess just clean towels. It would have been nice to have the bed made but I guess that’s fine. Please just drop the towels off while I’m at dinner.»
After dinner, I came back to my room and found that she had put the clean towels in my bathroom, picked up the dirty towels AND made my bed for me. That right there is literally five star service (I should know, I used to work at a 5 star hotel).

Nothing more to add from what others wrote. It’s clean cheap convenient. Parking can be quite the test of skills and nerves.

I stayed here back in March of 2013 for nearly 2 weeks and was very pleased with the quality of the room and friendliness of the staff. Fast forward to July 4^th weekend, 2014 and I checked in for one night. Overall friendliness of staff is still the same but room quality has gone down. Fridge didn’t work and smelled gross, like old leftover food. As a result my fruit went bad because I couldn’t use the fridge. There were white stains on the bed skirt and the alarm clock, I don’t even want to guess what the substance was. Chair in the room looked dingy. I got the room at the end of the corridor and outside of my room was blazing hot, they should look into ventilating that area because walk a few steps out the corridor and it feels fine, plus it wasn’t a hot night. It’s an ok place, beds are comfy and you’ll get a good nights rest in one but they need to pay closer attention to appliances and sanitizing the rooms.

room was a good value and clean. plumbing was loud and not much in the area. nothing special but not bad.

A completely uninteresting place. You go here because it’s cheap and has a decent bed. They used to have good showers with actual water pressure, but no more. Chips in the walls, bad patch jobs with non-​matching paint and chairs that came from 3^rd hand shops. The bed at least was clean and comfortable and all the amenities — fridge, microwave & blow dryer work.

My 2 sons and I recently had to stay here, as there was a slab leak in our apt. nearby. We are a 1 car family, which at the time was also in the shop for a new engine. I initiallly booked the room for two nights. I paid 100.00 cash deposit and the two nights rent. The rooms were ok, not great. The headboard of one of the beds had big gouges in the wood, and the other wood furnishings had big scratches in them. Long story, short… on the 4^th night there we saw a cockroach climbing on the curtain! !!! We shook out all of our clothes and packed up. We walked up the hill back to our unrepaired mess of an apt. It was better than staying with roaches!!! When I went back the next morning to tell the woman we were checking out, I told her and some people in the lobby waiting to check in. That is disgusting!!! Do NOT stay here unless you want roaches to take home as a souvinier!

Stayed here on summer vacation in San Diego two years in a row. Only good things to say. Clean, modern, comfortable bed and courteous staff. The wifi is included and is fast enough for Netflix and HBO Go in HD.
The location is good, most of the places we wanted to go in and around San Diego were about 20 min and easy to get to.
What you get at this place is well worth the money. I highly recommend.

Feels like three-​star hotel

I’m not looking for deluxe housing, just a clean place to stay for the weekend whilst visiting friends. Fridge, check. TV, check. parking lot, squishy, but check. crappy coffee, check. cheap rates, yes please! 3 rough but clean towels, check. Clean room, check. slightly shabby, but if I wanted fancier, I’d be paying more, right? No bedbugs for me here, so for sure I’ll be back! Oh yeah, I slept like the dead there, so that’s extra good in my book! I barely noticed any other guests. This is a 2^nd story hotel, with limited parking below, so the only potential noise would be from neighbors next to you – I heard not a thing!
There is a limited continental breakfast served starting at 7am.

Similar experience to Remain A below regarding the Indian woman. I reserved for 2 nights but only got one. Instead, they upcharged the second night without my knowledge. I only noticed when they asked if i wanted a copy of the receipt when checking out. Hmm, why not just give me a copy? Sure, I want a copy and sure enough they increased the 2^nd day’s rate, I tried to explain but they don’t care one way or another. Unscrupulous family business. Should have gone to any of the other numerous places around.

Stayed 4 nights, Internet was down a majority of the time. When it was up it was horribly unreliable. If you are looking for a place to stay then the price is reasonable, but assume you will have little to NO Internet access.

renovated rooms done more like a higher end hotel would be. Great shower. Cleaning staff does an excellent job! Staff is very friendly and helpful. You just can’t beat it! a real bargain at a clean well kept place. And of course the best is free WiFi, unlike where you have to pay for it at higher end places. It makes no sense. but to me that a make or break thing. Why don’t the bigger hotel chains get that.

website, it said that there is 24 hour staff on duty, check in time was 3pm, and check out time was 12pm. It said nothing about smoking charges even though I booked non-​smoking room for my toddler and I. I knew that we would be late so I called them on the check in date around 9:30pm to let them know of our late arrival. The customer service guy said no problems. We finally showed up at around midnight.
The first problem I encountered was the parking. The parking spaces are meant for compact cars so if you have large cars, you will have to hog two parking spaces. If the parking lot is full, then you are out of luck finding something nearby as the motel is off of the main busy street.
The office was closed and locked. There is a night window for check in that appeared to be closed as well. I rang the bell. An elderly woman walked out and checked us in. This is where the ISSUES began.
This elderly woman made me sign the registration form which included statements that said they will charge us USD200 if we smoke in the room and check out time would be 11:00am. I told her that the reservation said check out time is noon. We argued about this issue for a few minutes. One thing lead to another, we were arguing from one subject to another including smoking charges. This woman asked for my credit card for incidental damages. At this point I refused to give her my credit card and told her that I want to do cash deposit. She kept insisting on the credit card. After a few more vocal disscussions, she finally said USD100 cash deposit then. The woman got mad and said that if I am not happy with the registration terms and condition, I can just cancel the booking and leave. I told her that the reservation is nonrefundable and non-​cancellable according to
. Then she told me to hurry up because she was tired and wanted to go to bed. I told her that the reservation said that there will be 24 hour staff on duty. She said that she was up waiting for us as we are the last party to chec kin. I signed the registration form and gave her USD100 cash deposit. I asked for the receipt of the cash deposit. She manually wrote on the registration form USD100 cash deposit and showed it to me through the night window. I told her I want a copy of it. She threw a fit while making the copy to give to me and said, she has never had customer like me wanting a copy of everything and trusting nobody. She said that the front desk clerk will give me the report when I check out and that I do not need the registration form. She continued with her fit and warned me that I better make sure my toddler will not break her new LG flat screen TV. She continued on to saying that she has a water polo team staying there, my toddler and I better not disturb them by making too much noises.
After all that, we finally settled into our room which located right at the stairs. I can hear traffics all morning even at 3:00am. I can hear guests coming back to the motel at around 2:00am walking up the stairs and balcony. This motel must have changed hands recently. The microwave that was nailed down to the fridge both said «Best Value Inn.» The room appeared to be clean but does show wear and tear and decadence. Apparently, the only thing appeared to be of value in the room is the new LG flat screen TV. We didnt use their towels as they have stains. Whatever detergent they used on the linens, they do have distinct «motel» kinda smell. At first settling into the room, it does have that distinct «motel» odor. After the first day, either I got used to the odor of room and linen or the smell of our foods masked the odor.
We stayed there for two nights. When we checked out on Friday morning, the office was opened. I noticed that there is a sign right on the counter that said there will be USD150 charge for smoking in the room. The front desk clerk made us wait while the maid check the room before giving us USD100 cash deposit back. I asked for the report of our check out. The front clerk said that there is no such report. I told him that I want something that said that we checked out at 11:00am. He wrote on the motel business card and initialed it that we checkout at 11:00am.
This appeared to be family owned and operated business. There are good and negative aspects. Apparently, this particular family owned and operated motel business do not care about you as they don’t think that they will ever see you again. If they loose your business, it will not hurt them in any way.

We recently spent 5 days here while waiting for our new apartment to be painted. We chose this location because it was very close to my wife’s work and we’re a one-​car family.
The motel itself was what I’d expect from a room in this price range (We paid about $ 63/​night by paying in advance).
Nothing fancy. A 32-​inch flat screen with standard definition cable, a bed that wasn’t all that comfortable but no less so than any other bed I’ve experienced at Motel 6 or similar chains.
The biggest positive was the front desk staff… both the guys working that week were very helpful — 5 star service! Much more than I’d expect from this type of lodging and better than some of the service I’ve received at higher end hotels.
The location is great… easily accessible to both the 8 and the 94, which will take you anywhere in San Diego.
The room was serviced daily. My wife did have some guys walk into the room through the front door and she got the feeling they were hoping to find the room empty. The neighborhood isn’t the best but it’s not what I’d consider a «dangerous neighborhood either. Nearby the food choices are not great — though La Mesita and Oscars will give you decent Mexican fare and Shenanigans isn’t a bad place to grab a drink.
If you’re looking for an inexpensive place to stay, then this is a decent choice.

5 star service at a Super 8
I still can’t believe what an amazingly wonderful stay we had at a Super 8; the rooms are beautiful… our room was newly renovated and had the look and feel of an expensive hotel. I travel a lot and generally stay at high end places… The owner/​manager, Mitesh, was really incredible and took care of our every need… he even adjusted the water temperature in our shower when we asked about the temperature setting of the water. We’ve already booked our next stay there (we need to be in the area of SDSU) and cannot believe that we have found such a great place for the price. I highly recommend this wonderful gem.
