History

Established in 2014.

More than forty years ago, math educator Larry Martinek was inspired to find a better way to teach math.

As a teacher and consultant in public and top private schools, Larry possessed a uniquely comprehensive view of education. He saw a troubling theme in math instruction: a serious disconnect between the students’ basic skills training and the curriculum they were expected to master. They weren’t being prepared properly for their future.

Larry determined to find an approach that would provide children with the strong foundation they needed to succeed. Over the next three decades, he developed and assembled a blend of methods and materials. Instead of traditional memorization and repetitive exercises, Larry’s work focused on helping children understand math by honing their math instincts and getting them to think like mathematicians.

And it worked. Test scores skyrocketed. His work evolved into a complete curriculum. Now all children have the opportunity to succeed in math.

Business Owner

Jennifer opened Mathnasium to pursue her love of mathematics and problem solving. This began as she earned her K-8/Math and Reading Education BA from EWU and earned her secondary endorsement in math from Seattle University. Jennifer taught at preschool and college. She has been teaching for nearly 20 years. Because of this, she is well aware of the struggle teachers face as they try to reach every child and the challenges they have to overcome while working to help every student learn.

Having taught for the Tumwater and Shelton school districts, as well as at Grays Harbor College. Jennifer is very excited to help students fill in the gaps that exist in their math foundations and help them progress in math in a way they will enjoy, using the using the Mathnasium method of developing number sense.
