Gateway Inn

I stayed at the facility across the street from the BBQ place and Warhawk gym.
I retired 5 years ago so its been a while since I’ve stayed on Lackland, but let me say they just need to plow this place into the ground and start over.
At least two buildings have significant structural damage. House keeping ranges somewhere between mediocre and horrible. The «kitchen» area is just about non functional, so don’t count on it. The bedroom area with the desk is small and cramped… too much stuff in too little space. I liked the water pressure in the shower (just short of a fire hose) but it tended to get water all over the floor because the shower curtain was too short.
I’ve stayed in worse places, but it’s pretty much like they’ve given up on this place.

This hotel was perfect for me for the weekend staying at lackland. Way cheeper than staying off base, and walking distance from my fiancés dorm for us to meet up in the mornings. Everyone here was very pleasant and helpful the entire time. The room isn’t huge, I’m guessing it used to be old dorms that they fixed up. But it’s perfect for 1 – 2 people for a couple of days. I wished I would have stayed here for his BMT grad. One of the best parts about this hotel is that there’s a bus that will take you to the airport when you leave. I also loved that it’s basically walking distance from a lot of things on base. It’s a quiet area and I wasn’t worried at all staying here. It’s cheep, so no it’s not Hilton quality rooms but it’s perfect for visiting for a weekend, plus you won’t be in the room much anyways. I will stay here again when I go to visit.

I came here on Nov. 11 – 16, 2015. I saw my Airman graduate. I was offered free rides to the main events, like Airmans run, Coin Ceremony, and their Parade. The room was clean. One queen bed, a computer desk, flat screen tv, an alarm radio, microwave, coffee maker, fridge and free fast wifi ! It was nice for when my Airman wasn’t allow to leave base. My room was 44 $ for each night. No taxes. In the lobby they had free coffee and they also offered different types of coffee. The only thing I didn’t like about my room was that when I first got there, it felt a little humid. But they also had a cooler and heater there. My room would be cleaned out everyday. Having a shared restroom was uncomfortable, but I never had a problem with it. If I had to go back, I would stay here again since it made everything accessible. The staff was also nice and very helpful.

I’ve been here for 10 weeks TDY. When I got here to check in they were overbooked and moved me to some dump for 2 days. That was a disaster in itself. I was stranded homeless while the tried to find me a room. When I finally got to the gateway inn, it wasn’t horrible. I have a good housekeeper who kept the room clean for me. The room itself is a bit out dated, kind of grungy. My dehumidifier constantly leaks and they wont replace it. Three days ago the hot water in my shower wouldn’t turn off. I called the front desk and was told it would be fixed. Well its still running for 3 solid days. It’s steaming up my whole room and I have to keep the bathroom door shut at night. From the hot water running, the whole bathroom is soaking wet including the ceiling and its starting to create mold. Now I’m checking out in 3 days and they offered to move me to another room. The closest one is on the 3^rd floor (I’m on the 1^st) on the other side of the hotel complex. I’m here for THREE MORE DAYS! JUST SEND SOMEONE TO FIX IT! I was told that «a dripping shower is not an emergency.» I repeated to them again that it is not dripping, it wont turn off! They still said that maintenance will get to it when they can. So in the state of Texas where it barely rains, a running shower for 3 days isn’t an emergency. Whatever, I didn’t pay for my stay here, but I would never want to stay again. Oh and 2 stars because I probably got the only good housekeeper on property. She was great.

Although extremely convenient to base facilities, this is the worst AF lodging I have ever been to. We stayed at the Family Temporary Lodging Facility. The closet doors were all broken in some form and the bathroom shower had rust and mold. Some of the sheets had stains on them. This place is in desperate need of renovations. There are some spiders and mosquitoes. For $ 63 a nite, is it worth it… maybe. It is cheaper than off-​post.

I have been in the USAF 25 years and have stayed all over the world and as far as Air Force lodging this is among the worst! The rooms are very old and filthy. I am here on a 3 week TDY and within 2 days the water was shut off without warning. It was off for several hours. There are bugs in the room, my neighbor had to move due to bed bugs. The next week I lost all hot water for 2 days. The maids are polite, but do NOT clean. They make your bed and give you new towels, that’s it. I had to clean the room myself and even ask for the room to be vacuumed. My point is, this is a «hotel» and I am paying to be here. Therefore I shouldn’t have to do this.

For the Navy Personnel, you are looking for the «Air Force“gateway Inn not «Navy“gateway, lesson learned. Also, it is not on a main street, the building will be located right next to the gas station and store. The building to check in with your orders for Corrections school (Navy Personnel) will be in that same area, located right behind the gateway inn were you checked in for your room. To get to the quarter deck with orders from the gateway inn, you’ll either turn left on Gary from Femoyer and the building is to your left at the corner, or you’ll turn right on Metzger then another right, follow that around and it’ll be at the corner to your right hand side. building numbers/​addresses are placed on tiny plaques on the wall, so it will be very difficult to see the addresses at night, I highly suggest you come in during the day. I was placed in a room were I have to share the bathroom with my neighbor, I believe that is how it is for all students/​fleet returnees. I am enlisted and sharing a head with an Officer, which is fine, luckily she’s very sweet. The corrections school is right down the street from the gateway inn located at the corner of Truemper St. And Carswell Ave, by the intersection and next to the nice display of aircraft by the entrance, where Mc Donalds is at. If you enter the gate where McDonald’s is located, once you go in, you’ll make a left at the light and a right on Femoyer St. I happened to enter thru another gate and luckily asked for directions at the gate. Overall, The rooms are okay, but I feel like I have to wear my slippers and not walk barefoot in my room. Also I saw a silverfish bug right away on my bed. Yuck! My room did have enough space for all my clothes, my baggage, and other supplies that I brought. There’s also a tiny safe to lock your valuables, a mini fridge/​freezer, microwave and TV with DVD/​VCR PLAYER. My room is okay, I’m just glad I’m not sharing my bedroom with anyone I guess.

Very nice location, you get your money’s worth. Lackland staff very helpful. Price was good as well for 2 rooms.

I stayed here recently while TDY to Lackland for 4 months. After only a week, I moved in with someone at work rather than stay here any longer. The rooms are small which was expected but I did not expect the room to be so humid. The dehumidifier did not work and my clothes were literally damp. On a bright note, the laundry is free if you need to toss your humid, damp clothes into the dryer before work. I put in a work order and no one came to fix the dehumidifier so after a few days of damp clothes and sweating windows, I pried off the faceplate and fixed the dehumidifier myself. That thing is LOUD but effective. Unfortunately, the rooms are so damp that the bucket is full of water and the dehumidifier kicks off after only a few hours each time. So, I come home from work to a damp room and a full bucket of water to empty.
The shared bathroom is clean and I always had hot water. The person staying next door never locked me out of the bathroom so that was nice.
There is a tv with cable and free wifi in the rooms. Both worked well even if the TV has those bad reception bars across the screen.
The fridge and freezer are quite large which is was perfect for storing the ready made food I had to buy as there is no kitchenette.
HERE IS WHY THE TWO STARS:
The housekeeping is terrible. Simply lazy or inattentive. The trash in our bathroom was not emptied during my entire stay. My trash can in my room went two days without being emptied (not fun discovering when it was filled with food containers). The linens were never changed. The towels are what completely threw me off though… I came in to the room after work to discover «new» towels on the rack. They were dirty and damp and I believe they had been taken off the floor and re-​hung. The dry towels were somehow covered with hair that was not mine.
And…I’m not saying that there are bed bugs or fleas… but I have bites all up and down my legs and I was never outside during my stay where I would have been bitten up my mosquitoes.

Gateway Inn is probably the best place to go to if you’re a family visiting to see your loved one graduate from BMT. I’m sure most ppl will be unfamiliar with the layout of the base but this place makes it easy to access everything. It’s less than half a mile from most of the «dorms», drop off zones after town pass & base liberty, and it’s on base which is a huge plus. The rates are $ 60 for a suite with a private bathroom, fridge, microwave, 1 bathroom, 1 bedroom, 1 living room, a hugs closet, 2 tvs, and ac in both sections of the room (this is what I got). The other rate is $ 45 most likely for a smaller room and a shares bathroom. This hotel is also a great spot to hang out and catch up with your airman if you don’t feel like goin around trying to find things to do. Save money and relax with your airman here. They don’t really care bout goin out and just wanna be with their fam & loved ones. I tried to go out but I felt I just really wanted to relax with my airman and catch up and didn’t really care bout goin on adventures and whatnot. Room service is great. Reserving a room is really easy. They will make sure there is availability before they answer any of your questions. If you’re there for bmt, they give you an accurate schedule of the 2 days of graduation (Thursday & Friday). The schedule only changes most likely due to weather. The hosts seem to have all your answers about bmt since they provided me with a lot of tips from food to «where to go.» Since you need a DoD card to buy things on base they also have a small drinks/​snacks shop to buy from that’s within the lobby. You also don’t need to be a military family to reserve here. In order to get on base a day earlier since family is only permitted on base on certain days of the week for graduation purposes, all you need to do is provide some information about who ever is going. Can’t really complain about this place from my experience. This place isn’t fancy but because the staff was helpful and friendly and that the hotel was a good spot to be at on base, I’ll give it 5 stars!

If you don’t mind cold showers, no A/​C, loud parties and dirty/​old rooms… then you’ll enjoy your stay. However, I’m not 19 years old anymore and my wife and I were miserable. If there was a zero star rating, the gateway inn would win that hands down.

STUDENTS PLEASE READ!!!
Ok, so like many of you I had no clue what to accept when coming to this base for training (Navy Corrections) so I looked on here. I will give you the no BS version as it happed to me. First of all, if you are in the continental US you should DRIVE YOUR CAR. Trust me, DRIVE no matter where your coning from DRIVE, or at worst rent a car. Arrived on a Sunday night and was told I was a no show for a Saturday check in. When I made my reservations a month in advice I told the lady I didn’t have plane tickets yet, she said «we will just make it for Saturday and adjust as needed» Well, at check in they told me they had no rooms. A few firm words quickly cleared this up and I was placed on the opposite side of base from my school house. The walk was 1.56 miles and over 2 mile walk to the closest galley. As a student I could eat at the galley for free. The room was nice, zero complaints other than the location. 7 days later I was moved to the other side of base where all the students stay…
This is where it takes a turn for the worse, its easy for us to justify $ 44 a day for substandard living arrangements because technically we are not paying for it i.e. PERDIEM. Was given a room on the 3^rd floor and had to all my luggage to the building and then up the stairs. Not bad, expected. I got to my room and there was NO A/​C, this was February and the A/​C is shut off during the winter. BUT the daily temp right now has been 85ish. The rooms have next to no ventilation and only a small fan. I attempted to sleep which didn’t go well, instead I laid in bed all night sweating profusely with the door to my room open. I called the front desk to tell them about the room condition. AND I QUOTE «The base CO has not authorized the use of A/​C» I could not believe my ears. So thousands of service members are sitting in these rooms roasting and nothing can be done about it. Unacceptable, on so many levels. The INN needs to step up to the plate and challenge this. there are 57 students in my class all paying $ 44 a day for 27 days. My class alone will spend about $ 60,000 for this month and you are telling me we cant have A/​C. Shame on the base and shame on the Gateway Inn.
Hot water, personally I didn’t have this problem in my room but many class mates did. They didn’t seem to fix the problem just moved the students. Bugs everywhere, I made a friend in the bathroom, I named him Carl. See attached picture.
The rooms are clean and the staff does what they can given the situation they are in. My hat is off to them.
I hope this answers someone’s questions about what it is really like.
I do have a solution though, If you are in this situation, Raise awareness to it. I will be typing a powerful critique in hopes that it will be read by higher authority. I honestly think it would one walk through from any command level representative to fix this problem.

Update: after four days there I wake up in the morning looking forward to a nice shower and bam! No hot water… Didn’t have it for about 24hrs or so, so that was so not cool! I’m not really sure when they clean the rooms there but I’d usually leave around 9am and be back by 12/​1pm and nobody’s been in my room, so that was a slight letdown as well. But all in all it was an experience and hopefully I won’t have to stay there again.

It is a military hotel and the the price is absolutely affordable. Yes, it is old but it had everything we needed for just one night. More important, my husband forgot a very important personal item and he remembered when we were almost home. He called the hotel supervisor and she mailed it overnight back home.
That is customer service! !!

The hotel is so so. Very uncomfortable, outdated and it looks dirty but it’s not. We’re just sleeping here and our like tourist during the day so this meets our purpose. It’ll be nice if the AF knew the Army’s ranks… This define the «you get what you payed for»

This place is ok. Clean and secure. First time I came here I had a suite which was cool. No need to share anything. This time around I got a hamster cage, no big deal cause I was just staying one night anyway. The thing I hated was that I had to share a bathroom. This is so antiquated. With all the construction going on, they need to renovate these rooms so that you don’t have to share bathrooms and make it private. For being on an Air Force base, this is the oldest Gateway Inn I’ve been to. Never the less, it was still ok.

It’s okay. I’m now 2 months into my 3 month stint at the Gateway Villas (VOQ), located across the street from Smokin’ Joe’s BBQ and the Warhawk Fitness Center. The amenities are decent for one person. I have a mini kitchen with a full-​sized fridge, a small living area, a queen sized bed. The shower was just awful, I replaced the shower head with an acceptable one for my stay (see my picture I posted), I had NO HOT WATER this past weekend (a part for the boiler was broken), and I dealt with a water leak in my ceiling directly over my bed for 5 days before they came to fix it. For the $ 53.25/night the Air Force is paying for me to stay here, it could be a lot better! The housekeepers have been great and my air conditioner and fridge didn’t break during my stay (knock on wood), those are the only good points. The washer and dryers are okay-​when they are not broken. The WiFi was good too.

I came to my husbands graduation and stayed in a suite a total of 9 nights on the top floor.
This place is absolutely great. I stayed in a Suite with a private bathroom. It’s dated (not the Trump Tower) but is very clean and has everything you need.

We stayed at the Villa and the Inn. I know they are not five star hotels, but for the price it was clean, and we got everything we needed. Everything work fine. Both times we got suites. And, we were there for our son’s graduation which was perfect! Both of them were close to the ceremonies. The base bus passes close to both of them.
I would stay there again!
