Sherman Swim School

I love Katy, she is a wonderful swim teacher. Unfortunately the registration process is terrible. I have been taking my daughter there for almost a year and each session you have to sign them up. If you forget (which I have), then forget it. The instruction part is worth three stars but the registration process is awful and gets a 1 star. I stuck it out for almost a year and decided it just is not worth it anymore

I was excited to take my little girl to the same swim school I learned at as a child especially after seeing Mr. Sherman still there but after signing up for just one session they prorated me for two classes because the instructor went on vacation. After registering for 3 more sessions they failed to call me back or place us in a time slot with a «sorry…», so we cancelled. The sign up process and registration is unorganized and unprofessional and for the price you pay you could join Oakwood and take your kid swimming everyday…

Sherman Swim has two fantastic veteran teachers: Katy and Brianna and then a bunch of high school kids who are there for the summer. The classes are expensive because of the one-​on-​one nature of the teaching. Taking classes there during the summer can be a pain because parking on Carol Lane can be difficult requiring parents to park several blocks away. The sign up process is confusing and unorganized. The office staff has high turnover. And there is no one to to answer phone calls just an answering machine.

I have a stubborn little kid that lives in my house. He thinks he knows everything. Well, he doesn’t know everything. Including not knowing how to swim.
This school is great for that stubborn little smartypants in your life. My son had private one on one lessons. The teacher was patient and confident and really knew how to wrangle him in when he needed to be.
He was hot and cold with the whole situation. Some days he was all about swimming and some days he didnt want anything to do with it. But with a patient teacher, he was able to get into what ever groove he was in for the day.
I was very happy with his teaching and hes become more confident in the water. Hes not a full merboy yet, but we are well on our way. He will be continuing his private lessons this next session.

This swim school is amazing! We will be starting our second season here with our now 3 year old. She hasn’t stopped talking about teacher «Katy» since last summer. My niece also attended lessons last summer and had an excellent teacher. Both girls had so much fun while they learned about water safety and the beginning steps of swimming.

I lucked out and found Sherman’s, one of the only pools in the area that has an adult diving program!
It feels just like you’d want your family run, neighborhood pool to feel. I’ve had a great time coming once or twice a week for the past year.

My kids love getting in the water with the fun and caring instructors here. They ask me every day if they can go to swim lessons. We tried another local swim school and had the exact opposite experience, and both of my kids didn’t want to go back because they felt like they were being pushed too hard.
So we came back to Sherman Swim School and after just one lesson both of my kids are loving the water again! And they are having fun trying things they wouldn’t try before, like going all the way to the bottom of the pool. The instructors genuinely like working with kids and make it a positive experience. My daughter keeps talking about «the rainbow bridge» and all sorts of other games she played there.
Sherman seems very hands-​on, walking around and talking with the instructors and parents. You can really tell he cares about his school and values that it’s a positive experience for the kids as well as helping them learn to swim effectively. I’m very grateful for this place, because my kids are progressing quickly and loving it. Yes, it’s expensive, but all private lessons are (as far as I have seen all private lessons seem about the same price.)
I also had a really nice discussion with the woman who does phone scheduling and registration and she took the time to explain to me how it’s really a big deal for a kid to trust a stranger in the water. The water is often terrifying for children, and it takes a lot of trust to overcome that and get into the pool, and even more to float on your back or try new things. She said it’s important not to abuse the children’s trust, but rather to make it fun for them and be very encouraging so they keep progressing.
I continue to be impressed with this place!

My 47 year old wife wouldn’t even wade in a shallow pool and these guys got her comfortably over her fear of water enough that after just 2 lessons she’s snorkeling in the pacific ocean (with a floaty of course).
We found them by word of mouth for our daughters (8 and 11). Excellent approach with kids. One on one is more expensive out of pocket, but cheaper in the long run over group classes when you see the improvements.

My child loooooves her classes and has learned to swim with confidence. I was shocked the first time she walked out on a long diving board 3 or 4 feet in the air and jumped off of it to her instructor. When I saw the look on her face when she got to the wall we were instant fans of the school.

We moved to CA from PA and were looking for a place for our child to dive. After looking around, I decided to call our old coach from PA; he knew of this place from clear across the country and recommended the school.

If your child wants to learn how to swim or dive, I can’t think of a better environment or program to go with. This is a family business and it shows. My oldest child has been diving with Steve Sherman and the travel team for 3+ years and loves the comradely that Steve fosters. My other two kids have started taking diving lessons as well, but don’t travel — needless to say they do backflips for Steve.

I give this place a high rating as my daughter, age 5 loves the instructors and their approach to swimming. They are very good with the children and I love their approach! They also have an amazing dive team.

We’ve had great experiences at Sherman for the past two summers. My 5-​year old twins learned how to swim there. One of my girls is fearless and athletic and the other was afraid to go in the deep water and took a long time to warm up and they were great with both of them! At the end of the summer, the girls were both at the same place with their swimming. The teachers are positive, warm and skilled at teaching kids how to swim. With two kids in lessons over several sessions, we’ve had nearly every instructor and they’re all great!
Their lessons are expensive, but we’ve found them to be worth the price when we consider how much the girls have learned in a short period of time. You’ll be amazed by how much progress the kids make in 3 weeks. Sherman has been around for a long time and they seem to have perfected their approach. At first I was skeptical of 15 minute lessons, but I think they’re right — that’s about how long the kids can pay attention and really focus. And the lessons are private so the instructor is totally focused on your child.
We highly recommend Sherman. We’ve been happy there.

We have had a very positive experience here. The lessons are pricey, but well worth it. I’ve heard from others that the parks and rec offer lessons, but that their children did not learn to swim. I have been very impressed with the knowledge of the teachers and they seem to really enjoy what they do. My son LOVES LOVES LOVES getting swim lessons here and totally recommend it.

I have seen several swim schools, and Sherman Swim School is by far the best. The instructors are trained very well, and the staff is very professional. Students are taught essential skills while having fun. If you want your child to learn how to swim AND love the water, then I highly recommend this school.
