Banyan Tree Deli & Bakery

Searched up and down Front St. Eager to try this place. Heard it went outta business a couple months ago. So sad. Pretty sure a Burger King took its place. Ugh.

5 stars for a long slice of chocolate covered bacon to munch on along Front. St. It might sound gross to some but its soooo good! Try it!
And the best chocolate cupcake I’ve ever had… the Chocolate Velvet was killer! Friendly guy at the counter too!

Gf and I came here to grab some quick breakfast to eat before going on our whale watching tour.
Got two breakfast sandwiches which were pretty good. Luckily, I took medicine for seasickness so I didn’t lose my breakfast. Price was decent. Overall a good place, but nothing that is really totally memorable to me. Maybe if I am ever back in Maui I will get to try their other baked goods.

Randomly walked in and wow, were we happy we did! We only got to sample some banana bread and a banana chip muffin, but even with just those two tastes, we LOVED it. Our boys (who usually don’t each very much) pretty much devoured the food — there were so many yummy looking things in their display case, we will definitely put this on our go-​to list next time we’re back on Maui!

My family and I were in Lahaina and looking for a place to get some food before we went on the road to Hana. This place had such great reviews and we decided to check it out.
The service was great, the girl at the front was extremely nice and helpful. I told her that I was a baker and we talked about that for a bit. I like that they have tropical fruit in their scones and crazy stuff like chocolate covered bacon.
I got the mixed berry scone and I was pretty disappointed. It was really dry and dense and didn’t have much flavor. My husband got the mango scone and it was similar. Overall I just wasn’t impressed, but who knows, maybe the scones just aren’t their signature item. If I were in the area I would perhaps try them one more time just based on their friendly staff.

Had the German chocolate banana bread and Scone + medium kona coffee
–little on the expensive side
–super sweet
–coffee was a little watery
–nothing to brag home about, but if you’re craving for something sweet instead of shave ice, a place worth going

Wanted to visit this place after reading about it on Unilocal.Wouldn’t you know they had the same reviews on the wall in restaurant when I got there. Maybe this one will make it up on the wall, too. Hi, fellow eaters!
I was definitely not disappointed by this place, a hidden gem on Front Street in Lahaina. Please, *please* pass up the Burger King and walk juuuuust a little farther down to discover this little haven from the heat and humidity.
Following the suggestions of so many people here, I had the pastrami sandwich, and it was delish. Just the right size – not too big or small, and definitely fresh. The meat was tasty without being too salty, the bread was obviously baked that day, and the toppings (lettuce, tomato, sprouts, mayo & mustard) were in just the right proportion. My wife had the turkey and cheese (and I may have stolen a bite!) and her sandwich was good, too. Fresh and delicious.
We also couldn’t leave without sampling a bit of dessert, so we tried a chocolate & caramel «cake drop», which is basically a bit of cake with some tasty melted gooiness on top of it. Again, just the right size, very fresh and delicious, and reasonably priced.
Don’t pass the Banyan Tree Deli & Bakery up next time you find yourself on Maui. It’s a very pleasant break from all the overpriced mediocrity you find on the island (in particular on Front Street). We’ll definitely be back!

If you’re passing through Lahaina, do not leave until you eat here!
I ran into this place after riding on the submarine tour. There was a large selection of pastries and sandwiches to choose from. I had the opportunity to meet the owner Darren who is a super nice guy and he told me about his story. They cookies are like chips, you just cannot have one. I bought so many that he threw an extra one in for me to eat behind my wife’s back ;) The sandwiches were really delicious, too bad I didn’t get to try everything & I can’t come here all the time…
For those of you commenting about the Chocolate Bacon, COME ON, it’s chocolate & bacon, what else should you expect???

Haven’t had a good sandwich like this in such a long long time. I got the ham and cheese sandwich and hubby got the pastrami.
Hot sandwich to go, perfect for after snorkel adventure. Loved the sprouts they put on there.
really wanted to try to bakery items, especially the maroons. I saw they also make their own choco peanut butter cup.
Very interested in visiting this shope sometime soon again.
I’d have to say, parking around here sucks! really 11 dollars for 30 mintes to 2 hr parking? Geez I was only there for 10 minutes max!

My cousins and I came in here randomly because it was open when we were there around 8. We walked in and chocolate bacon? We’ve always wanted to try it so we got one to share.
What we got:
Chocolate Bacon ($ 2.25): I’ve been waiting to try this and when I did, I was kind of disappointed. I don’t know how to describe it, but it didn’t taste like how I imagined it to be. To me it didn’t have the chocolate taste or the bacon taste. Maybe I just don’t know what it is suppose to taste like, but after eating it I don’t know if I would want to try chocolate bacon again…
Service:
The lady behind the counter was nice. There were not that many people there in the morning so service was fast. She was kind enough to cut the bacon into 4 pieces for each of us to try, but other than that it was just a-​ok.

Had a scone, red velvet cupcake, and turkey sandwich. I’ll be honest, the sandwich has this freshness to it and just lets your taste buds know the baker put some major time and sweat into starting a super early day to get the breads and pastries out. I’m not sure if there was an issue with my red velvet cupcake but it was not like the usual cupcakes you’d get because it had this hollow wet sponge like texture to it. I don’t even know how to describe it. The scone was not to my liking but to be honest, in the end this is like a ma-​pa shop and all of it (whether it suited my tastes or not) had that ma-​pa love put into the food.

We happened upon this deli our last morning in Maui. Walking down the street in Lahaina, I was drawn in by the smell of their fresh baked goodies. Hmmmmmmmm…
We came in and were greeted immediately by the girl behind the counter. I decided to go with the mango scone — ohhhhhhh! I’m not much of a scone girl, but this one was good.
My bacon loving husband saw their chocolate covered bacon and went for that. I’ll let him vouch for the bacon — he says it was very good… just like the Salted Hot Chocolate from Starbucks.
I’ll take his word for it.
Great neighborhood spot with very friendly people!

I was really excited to try this place and support a small business owner. We popped in for lunch and had a turkey and roast beef sandwiches and a cookie for dessert. The bread was good but the meat, lettuce and cheese tasted like Subway to me. It’s $ 7 for a small sandwich, no chips or drink. I get that it’s Maui and Maui is expensive but I thought I would get a bit more like a pickle for the money. The cookie was pretty good, redeemed the lunch. $ 25 for two sandwiches, two beverages, one small bag of chips and a cookie. The woman working the counter was nice and the place was clean.

I am so happy Unilocal steered me to this new bakery in Lahaina! I went by the other night after dinner but they were closed, so made a special trip yesterday to check them out.
This is a sole proprietorship all the way — my favorite kind of shop! The bakery items are all fresh and look homemade, which I love. I got a slice of the walnut apple pie for my husband, who declared it delicious (this is a big deal for boring old apple pie to a pastry connoisseur such as my hubby!). I treated myself to a chocolate dipped macaroon which was the coconut-​tiest I had ever had! It was wonderful!
I look forward to popping in the next time I’m in town and trying something different. I was hoping to see the white chocolate dipped peanut butter cookies featured on Unilocal,but you basically get whatever they made that day (and pb cookies weren’t on the menu when I was there — boo!).
Service was a little slow as there was only one person working, but she was very sweet and patient as I asked her several questions about the offerings.
Those enjoying their treats looked very happy, and all plates were cleaned off as they were turned back in for dishwashing. A very good sign!

The owner starts his day at 2am to start baking the stuff he’s going to sell for the day. Everything from the bread for the sandwiches to the dozens of sweets in the shop.
I stopped in to Banyan Tree Deli & Bakery on the way to the airport. I ordered a pastrami sandwich to go. After learning that I was not going to eat my sandwich right away, the owner packed the components of the sandwich separately so that my bread wouldn’t be soggy! So nice.
I also ordered a few cupcakes and cookies. I was curious about the POG (Pineapple, Orange, Guava) flavored cupcake and was hesitant on trying it. The owner gave me the cupcake for FREE to try and said that he won’t charge me if I didn’t like it. Now that’s customer service. I actually didn’t like it because it was too sweet for me, and the owner made good on his word and did not charge me for it.
Overall, a friendly little place with great food. The pastrami sandwich, red valvet cupcake and jumbo cookies were delicious. This was definitely one of the better places to eat in Lahaina!

I got the pastrami sandwich on our way to the airport and it was bomb!
Perfectly seasoned and juicy meat. The veggies kept me guilt free and the bread wasn’t soggy after 10 minutes of sitting in the to-​go box.
Side potato salad and the pickle made it a complete breakfast! I’ll seek this place out again next Maui trip!

I eyed this café as I was sitting at a bench at the Banyan Tree Park across the street. It looked really cute from the outside and I imagined all the baked goodies that were probably on display. Alas, that day, I was not able to venture inside.
The next day, I ended up doing a submarine tour with Atlantis. Lo and behold they included a free cookie coupon from Banyan Tree Bakery! Who can resist a free cookie? The free cookie I received was actually quite big in my opinion (although smaller than the BIG cookie they sold for $ 1.75) and tasted REALLY good!
I left the bakery and went on with my day wandering around Front Street. By the end of the day I had to go back and actually buy one their big cookies. My bf also bought a chocolate chip/​mac nut muffin as well. The muffin was pretty good; but I have to say their cookies are top notch!

This is a great little place for a casual lunch. Popped in after surfing in the morning and had a killer hot roast beef sandwich. Melted swiss, horseradish aioli… and pay the extra buck for the caramelized onions. Killer. We snacked on a couple of the different chocolate macadamia nut goodies, equally great.
Wish we had room for the cupcakes, cause they looked fantastic too… but I’ve already got too much of a gut hanging over my board shorts. May have to hit them up a 2^nd time before we leave.
Oh, and the owner was super friendly… even tossed a couple of free chocolate samples our way.

Bottom Line: A great place to eat among all the commercialism in Lahaina!
This little gem of a shop is a great find at what seems the end of the busier part of Lahaina. It’s kind of fitting considering that we walked looking for a place to eat that wasn’t some touristy food attraction or some other franchised food chain.
It’s run by a couple of Darren and Pamela. They’re responsible for the culinary delights that come from this shop.
We had a great pastrami sandwich, and was fortunate enough to sample some chocolates and muffins.
First, the place is very casual, and the guys are great — Thanks Darren and Leo! Excellent service, clean, and very good food. It’s got a couple of 2 person tables inside, and maybe 1 or 2 more 2 person tables outside. Very quaint.
The prices they’re asking for their wares aren’t unreasonable at any price point, but considering the quality of food you’re getting it’s very reasonably priced.
Moving on — the pastrami is very lean, and probably the best pastrami I’ve had. It was very flavorful, and well balanced. The spiced mayo was very light and balanced the pastrami very well. The bread is on another level — it definitely takes this sandwich to the next tier. I’m glad they didn’t go with some heavier bread for it.
We had some chocolates that are hand made at the shop. I tried two milk chocolate clusters with some nuts, and a «secret ingredient.» I was unable to guess it, but I suspect it’s anise or something unexpected. The other two were white chocolates with different subtle flavorings like coconut.
The foods we sampled so far are very subtle, and well balanced. Not one flavor or texture overpowers the other. I like that.
On to an experimental muffin. (They said the muffin wasn’t actually for sale yet, but they are just trying to make some new recipes.) I was fortunate enough as a Unilocaler to get to try it! Nah, I dunno, maybe they’re just trying new stuff out. Anyway — it has some lime in there, and had coconut shavings on a mango icing. Again, very subtle, but good. This would go perfectly with a glass of milk. Let’s hope that eventually that this concoction makes it to the bakery shelf!
The last treat I tried was a red velvet muffin. To be fair, they warned me that the muffin was best to eat within 3 hours… unfortunately, that delicate muffin had to endure 5 hours of sun and touring in Maui. I will refrain from reviewing the muffin, because I don’t think it held up that well.
All in all, an excellent find in Lahaina and highly recommended. If on my next visit, they’re still churning out great food and treats with their friendly service, I won’t hesitate to give them another 5 star review.

This is a cute little shop that opened up about 3 weeks ago according to the owner. I purchased a red velvet cupcake which was pretty big compared to the cupcakes sold at other bakeries. The look of the cupcake looked like something out of a magazine and very cute. The taste of the cupcake was even better than how it looked. I can’t wait to try the other baked goods that are sold there.
