The 1927 Lake Lure Inn and Spa

Alright, there is a dated feel here, but I am seriously not mad at it (like, literally real keys). If I had kids, I would bring them here. The lake is right across the street, the service is great, while not being stuffy. Just a chill clean place to spend some time and enjoy the area. We plan to come back and stay a week.
Oh, and reviewer somewhere said there aren’t coffee makers. False, I am looking at mine.
One more thing if you’re wondering. We stayed in the suite in the motor lodge (hello box tv!). ;) But really, still love it.

It was beautiful and quite historic!

My wife and I stayed with our pet in the Overlook cabin. worst pet friendly cabin we’ve ever stayed in and also the most expensive. the only thing good about staying here is the breakfast. we will not be staying here again. Definitely not worth the cost. drive a little further or use
to stay in the area.

Husband planned a romantic getaway for us to celebrate our 1^st wedding anniversary. Sadly no more vacation days after a trip to Europe this summer, so had to be a local trip. I had no clue where we were going and husband kept saying I would have the time of my life (I kept thinking he must have lost his mind because now at would whatever dark windy road lead us to somewhere we would enjoy more than the south of France). So, my favorite movie is Dirty Dancing. So I was pretty excited when we pulled up and I realized where we were. Neither of us have ever been to a lake lure before (and we will be back, gorgeous!). The Inn is beautiful when you pull up. The Lobby is quaint and I enjoyed all the antique. Charming that it still feels so historic. We were quickly checked in by great staff. Where this resort loses two stars is when we got to our cabin. Hubby was so excited he booked the Baby Bungalow. And at 300 a night, he clearly had high expectations. Walking up it looks so cute. Charming bungalow with stone and rocking chairs on the front porch. But it all ends there when you open the door. Inside is a dark, dank, sad looking rooms. Think not even as nice as a Day’s Inn room. Several lights don’t work. Carpet is ripped, stained and fraying. Bed linens are stained and tired looking. Curtains that may have been purchased at Big Lots. Needless to say, I don’t recommend you getting this Bungalow. Perhaps the rooms are nicer in the Inn. Or more affordable. But for 300 bucks a night in this location, we expect at least a decent quality room. We travel extensively both business and pleasure and don’t expect perfection. But this was such a let down. We will not be returning. Either management needs to lower price to reflect quality of what they are offering or they need to make a few small changes to make this bungalow feel more upscale (new carpet, new drapes and linens, working light fixtures, paint scuffs and discoloration on walls and doors, and replace the rusting air grate!).

The Sunday brunch buffet is to kill for… The prime rib, apple bacon and the roquefort dressing were my favorites. My husband’s favorite was the bahi tuna spread that was made to perfection. The dining room is magnificent and over looks Beautiful Lake Lure. The real piano music is a treat and the white linen tablecloth and napkins give it a even more upscale feeling. I’m a large woman and the seats were very comfortable and there was plenty of room. We have eaten at many brunches from Palm Beach to the Riviera and this is one of the best!

This was our second stay at the hotel. I like it because it isn’t a cookie cutter motel. It has a lovely atmosphere; you really do think you have stepped back in time. The room was very comfy with a nice king sized. The whole place was very clean and the staff was very attentive.

The 1927 Inn was recommended to us by someone whose opinion I trust, but I should have asked more questions. The area itself is lovely… Lake Lure is in a beautiful valley surrounded by scenic mountains, and there are lots of cabins built on the lake with overflowing decks where visitors can jump right in the water or board their boat or kayak and take a spin. But we weren’t in one of those lovely cabins, we were in the inn.
The lobby is filled with lots of dark antiques, in our opinion, to the point of looking dreary. Yes, there are some interesting old clocks and music boxes, and some interesting newspaper articles framed on the wall. But too much, too cluttered, just not appealing to us at all. You might like that sort of thing. The collection of stuff continues in the hallways on the guest floors as well, in fact large arm chairs are placed right in front of the stair landings on the second and third floors. I guess they assume you will use the single elevator with shiny brass and mirrored effect walls circa early 1980’s.
You get your real key attached to that strange shape key fob that Holiday Inns used like 30 years ago. It is historic, so no shock there, then we arrived at our room.
To say this room is small is an understatement no matter what inflection you use. A huge four poster oversize king bed dominates the room… truly dominates… way too much. We also had chunky bedside tables that when placed beside the bed made you feel like exclaiming «Choo! Choo!» because railroad tracks could not have been tighter. To get to the far side of the bed, hubby had to squeeze by a table I guess you would call a sofa table, and then maneuver past the closet type set up attached to the wall, there is no closet. Then squeezing past that, the window air conditioner is right beside where his chest will be… roaring away.
I had requested a room with a view of the lake. That view was from a window adjacent to the room’s closet structure, in the corner, and was mostly a view of a tree.
We then opened the door to the bathroom, and yikes again. The toilet had a cheap wire shelf unit above it with towels and a basket of toiletries, a pedestal sink, and a cute vintage look medicine cabinet above. Then this shower, a tiny ridiculously small shower was your only bathing option.
I can handle a small hotel room, and I can tolerate furnishings that were obviously horrible choices for spacing, etc., but that tiny «telephone booth shower,» no. I went down to the front desk to relay, as politely as I possibly could, and see if there were any other options available. I knew there were, because it was obvious from the parking lot we were one of only maybe seven guests.
The nice, but not overly helpful clerk said this is a historic hotel and the rooms are small, and the showers are small, that people were simply smaller in general back in 1927. Really? Her only suggestion was the suite next door to our room that she would gladly switch us to for more than double the price we were paying. (I’ll admit, this room was only $ 99 per the special they quoted me when I called to reserve, online said $ 149 I think, so the Patrick Swayze Suite was only $ 229, but I’m not happy in general… so I’m not paying $ 229). She offered to call her manager while we went to dinner, which she did, and when we came back gave us a key to go visit another room that was somewhat better. (That room at least had a chair in it, and a bathtub/​shower combo like you’d expect. The reason we didn’t switch is that window air unit was not turned on, so it was hot, and for some reason we can’t 100% say the towels from this room’s cheap wire storage unit had all fallen into the toilet. At least, that’s what I’m assuming happened, but regardless, I wasn’t really wanting to wait on maintenance or housekeeping, etc. to remedy while the hot room was cooling off and then still be small and have a huge four poster bed).
We had a restless night with a cheap mattress that had your choice of hill or valley to sleep in, and if you moved at all the wrong thing shook. The air was blowing directly on us too strongly/​loudly, but without it things smelled musty. We finally got up at 7 and hubby took some resemblance of a shower in the tiny stall, but I just opted to pull my hair back and head out, knowing that would just frustrate me more.
We skipped breakfast, although from what we saw it wasn’t much to skip, and for only the second time in my life checked out a day early to head home. We knew we did not want to spend another night here, and if we explored Lake Lure and nearby Asheville for very long, a standard Hampton Inn room would be a huge improvement for these accommodations.
And please know I am not picky, I’ve only asked to switch hotel rooms one other time in my life, which was not the same trip where I checked out a day early one other time in my life.

First time visit to the Lake Lure Inn and Spa. It’s a beautiful inn and a step back in time. The inn staff were very friendly and our room was very cozy. I would suggest this spot for anyone wanting to escape for a weekend getaway. Excellent food at the Moose & Goose and the Veranda Restaurant which are inside the inn.
We will be returning visitors every time we get up to Lake Lure, NC. It is a very family-​friendly town. For all you movie geeks out there, this is where parts of Dirty Dancing were filmed.

The bathrooms have no fan or ac. Window ac units in my upgraded room. Worn out carpet throughout. Checked in and no one else in the entire place. Bar & restaurant never opened. Tried to use pool, some lifeguard training class taking place. Planters have no flowers, cigarette butts. Their website is completely misleading. Everything is old in a sad way. Entire place is pavement. Gardens? There are none. Free pastries in AM are left there all the time & hard as rocks & there were fruit flies inside the container. Gross! Everyone that works there was nice. This place is like an old school motor inn. Interesting historical photos.

Sunday brunch is always amazing! The inn goes all out to cover all of the bases for a great dining experience. The roast beef and turkey was tender, juicy and delicious! Menu items change but I enjoyed the variety of fresh fruit and vegetables along with the casseroles available, especially the mashed potatoes. The wait staff is very friendly, accommodating and efficient. Save room for desert because you’ll see the chocolate fountain, a piano covered in assorted pies. If you want a mimosa, you’ll have to wait until 12:00.

We only used the spa services and found them incredible, tranquil and very accommodating

Attended a birthday dinner at the inn. Not a single person was pleased with their dinner. The food was bland. The pasta was very plain, it only had a little bit of cheese melted on top, and the vegetables were the same. The chicken and fish were extremely dry. I’ve never been so disappointed, especially with the very high prices of the dishes. The selection was fine, but please fix the quality!

A lot of charm and great service. Hotel has a great location right on Lake Lure. The hotel and the lobby are very impressive when you arrive. Check in process could have good smoother but it was the night shift. The room was a little musty when we walked in but I found the room to be very clean. This initial mustiness was probably just because the hotel is so old. Once you open the awesome old windows and air the room out everything is cool. The bed and my sleep were great and while the room was small the antique fixtures and décor made up for this in the charm category. This is a great place to stay if you are passing through the area just for one night or staying the week.
There is a public beech right out front where you can rent paddle boats. There was a bar and restaurant in the hotel but we arrived late and left early and they do not serve breakfast at the restaurant. They did offer pastries and coffee in the morning though. There was a great breakfast shop within walking distance along with shopping and walking to fill the day.

Clean, comfortable, relaxing and charming. Spent a night here and must say, I will definitely come back. This place is affordable and well kept. The staff is friendly and great for advice on the surrounding area. There’s a beach out front to enjoy and also a pool. Just a short walk to the Italian restaurant near by too. The beds were heavenly! I woke up refreshed and happy.

We attended a wedding held at the lake lure inn and were so excited by the beautiful location and the convenience of the rooms being connected to the wedding venue… We checked in easily, we got ready in our room then attended the wedding and came back to our room to shower and sleep, looking forward to the next day! To our surprise, as we pulled our sheets back to crawl in bed… Something was crawling IN the bed! A tiny brown bug! No way it could be a real bed bug tho right? I grabbed it with toilet paper and dropped it in the toilet — but decided to keep looking around the bed. I flipped over my pillow and found another bug! The other pillow? ANOTHER BUG! The more I looked, the more I found. A total of 7 bed bugs before I got so creeped out, I made my husband call the front desk and inform them we would be checking out!
The man at the front desk told us it probably wasn’t bed bugs, it just might be some other kind of big… I took photos of the bugs and brought them to show him. He acted weird about it and told us he didn’t have any other rooms to offer us but he would refund our money. We accepted this offer, and left! ASAP!
We have since attempted to contact the management twice about the bed bug problem but they have not returned our calls, emails and so I feel responsible to warn anyone considering this hotel to think again! Camping in a tent would likely be cleaner and less stressful!

I’m not sure at all what this guy Gunter was talking about, except that perhaps he went in with the wrong expectations. We fell in LOVE with this place and can’t wait to go back for a romantic relaxing getaway.
In summary, this place has everything to love about a bed and breakfast, and none of the things you hate (think nosy woman asking when you’ll be gone and be back, asking if you slept well, and generally making you uncomfortable) It’s set in a sweet little small town that’s perfect if you’re looking for peace and quiet and mountain views.
We went here for a friend’s wedding, and booked two nights in the Inn-​Saturday and Sunday. We arrived at midnight on Saturday to the lavishly appointed lobby and a super friendly hotel clerk. He was happy to tell us all about the area when we checked in, about how the area pretty much closes at 8pm, but the hotel stays open late for guests. We chatted about the scenes from Dirty Dancing, about how excellent the brunch downstairs was that would be served in the morning. We were on a first name basis with him by the time we headed upstairs.
The third floor hallway was incredible too. It was covered in richly appointed furnishings, wall-​to-​wall with art, and the double staircase had a huge stained glass window. It was obviously incredibly dated, but that just added to the charm.
Our room was small compared to most hotel rooms, but that was in part because it was filled with the biggest four poster bed I’ve ever seen. Large ornate furniture, cute tiled bathroom, and conveniently mounted television for superior in-​bed viewing. Aside from the TV and the air conditioner we felt like we had been transported back in time.
The next morning we took a stroll around the lake along a cute boardwalk as we watched the paddleboats and kayaks meander across the lake. We made it past the marina and little waterslide area to the park with all the spring blossoms flowering and memorial trees (it was springtime and sunny) while families picnicked, fished, and played. Later the wedding was held out at this gazebo, surrounded by a variety of flowering landscaping and against a backdrop of lake and blossoming mountains. A small trolley was also available to take us to and from the gazebo and hotel.
See my review of the Veranda to hear about the amazing brunch. That night the ornate dining room was host to our buffet style reception, and the veranda and poolside hosted the cocktail hour and dance floor. Fun lighting and beautiful staging made for an excellent party.
By the time we made it back to our room, the bed was exceptionally comfortable, the AC had it nice and cool, and we couldn’t ask for better facilities.
The next day they offered free extended checkout, the parking was practically right up to the door, and you were less than 5 minutes from chimney rock for an adorable Main Street, exceptional hiking and mountain views, and quaint dining. (Gunter is right in that you won’t get outstanding cosmopolitan food here. Expect average southern dining from the area and you’ll be perfectly happy – think hot dogs, ice cream, fried chicken and sweet tea. There’s even a Mexican and Italian place.)
I know this was long, but if you’ve made it this far I hope you’re convinced that this is a slice of tranquility in the NC mountains with enough nostalgia and springtime to create a fairy-​tale setting. Next romantic getaway weekend, this is where you’ll find us.

On August 12 this year we went on Vacation to North Carolina and stayed at this Inn. I must say that this was a disappointment to say at least. We like to pick Places with nice Restaurants when we travel so we can enjoy a nice wine with Dinner without driving in an Area we don’t know. Unfortunately, the restaurant was closed that night.
The Room was in the attached Motel and was very dark. The door had a open space when it was closed. Enough to get plenty of Gnats into the Room. The Bed was very uncomfortable.
Thanks God this was the only place in the 7 Nights we stayed in North Carolina in which we where disappointed.
