Kilburnie the Inn At Craig Farm

Absolutely beautiful place and well worth a visit.
My mother’s family is in Lancaster and I was returning after having been absent for 20 years. I wanted to find a place and ran into this inn on the internet and, luckily for me, it was only about 1 ½ miles from my aunt and uncle’s farm. I’ve had mixed success with B&B’s and was a little hesitant but given it’s proximity to my destination I figured I’d give it a try.
I can’t begin to praise this property high enough. The home itself is absolutely beautiful and located in a very peaceful setting. We stopped by outside the normal check-​in hours on the off-​chance we could be accommodated. We met the host, Johannes, and immediately fell in love with the place. His excitement, exuberance and knowledge of the local area was inspiring. He gave us a tour which included a history of the house as well as Lancaster.
The room was very comfortable and quite nicely appointed.
We arrived for breakfast at about 8:15 and were warmly welcomed. The three-​course breakfast was absolutely wonderful. Freshly made apple-​cider muffins followed by a pear and blueberry dish. The oven shirred eggs, though, were out of this world delicious.
Johannes has an interesting history in the hospitality business. His attention to detail, passion and skill are all on display and focused quite well on this inn. Get him to give you a history of the inn and you will see what is quite obviously a work of love to which all his guests benefit.

What an amazing place! Off the beaten path, for sure, but what a wonderful place and very worth going 30 minutes off the main highway to stay for an extremely relaxing and beautiful B & B. Well kept and expansive acreage, historic décor and furnishings, and (the BEST part), the Innkeeper. Johannes, as others have mentioned, is truly amazing. He takes care of his guests, is one of the most interesting persons I have ever met, and cooks the most phenomenal breakfast (s) I may have ever had to date.
If you are ever even close, it is worth staying, and if you are looking for a beautiful wedding ambiance or extended and refreshing relaxation getaway, I would strongly recommend you look this one up!

Love this bed and breakfast! Johannes is an incredible host. We loved hearing about his history as well as the history of this lovely home. My daughter and I were on a road trip to check out colleges and after a looooong day on the road, what a restful haven we found at Killburnie! Our third floor walk up suite was spacious, lovely and incredibly relaxing. The therapy bathtub was a godsend for our tired bodies and we slept like babies in the comfortable beds! Breakfast was a delish three course gourmet affair! Should we make our way back to lancaster, this is where we will stay!!!

First question you may be wondering is why in god’s name would I ever go to Lancaster South Carolina? Well, the only answer that I can fathom is to go to this Bed and Breakfast. I like to write a lot about ambiance. This place has the absolute best that I have ever experienced. It is an 1820’s rebuilt antebellum home that was restored from basically nothing, in 14 months. Upon first arriving you are greeted with the elegantly simplistic entrance, which is a narrow driveway lightly covered with crushed gravel. The house is visible from the road and doesn’t seem to be as impressive as when you go past the massive white and blue front porch. Parking is on the side and you walk around to the main entrance, up the steps and as soon as your on the porch an overwhelming feeling of elegance attacks your senses. Spacious yet intimate, simple yet artful, timeless but not antiquated. Thats just the porch. Crazy… The front door is so small if you have a lot of luggage you will have to open both of the doors. Small thin dark wood doors (one is the original and the other custom made to match the original) with the original handles (I think). After you enter you see the hallway going straight back to two of the huge bedrooms, a «L» shaped stairway to the left, a sitting room to the right, and the breakfast room to the left. I was immediately drawn to the sitting room, as was my family. We sat in there and played games and talked for about three hours. Each room is uniquely decorated with the time appropriate artwork, antique furniture, huge ceiling, and ornate crown molding. One of the wall pieces turned out to be worth $ 30,000 and the another for $ 150,000 (this one is in the breakfast room). Try and guess which ones. ) Each room, I think, has a gas powered fire place that is fully vented so you don’t get the smell, only the heat.
I actually don’t think that this description is going to do this place justice… but its a shot.
The owner doesn’t stay there, so you get complete privacy when there. We were spoiled because we were his only guests that night… lucky us.
The next morning breakfast was served at 9:00am and coffee was ready at 8:30. The meal was a homemade muffin of orange and other delicious-​ness… The next was a broiled grapefruit with sugar melted on top like crème brûlée. I usually don’t eat grapefruit because it is too bitter but the melted sugar soaked through the fruit and cut out the sharpness. You can find this recipe on his site as well (
). Next was the eggs… Not going to bother describing them because it is the first thing on the recipe section of the site. All I can say is if you serve this to your girlfriend, wife, lover, or whatever in bed you will make their day…
After breakfast he sat down with us and talked about the house and I asked for a tour. Pretty incredible. The two upstairs bedrooms are just as big as the ones downstairs with the exception of the bathrooms, they are bigger. The tub in each one sites across from another gas powered fireplace. If you are the type of person that enjoys relaxing in a tub with a glass of wine or a book then you will be in heaven here.
Next is the upstairs suite. I actually wasn’t as impressed by this one as the four others, but still interesting. If you stay there, make sure to get the tour and he will explain all of the details that I am neglecting.
Now to the grounds… When you step out on to the front or back porch at the time of year that we were there you will be amazed. The sky was a perfect blue that nearly matched the paint on the ceiling, the pillars are a perfectly clean white, the leaves on the trees blazing with orange and red and yellow and the grass a magnificent green. The temperature was probably in the 60s or 70s. Quite incredible… it made us actually forget for a little while that the reason we were there was quite sad.
So, if you are ever traveling somewhere in and or around Columbia or Charlotte SC this place is well worth the hour or so drive off the beaten path to stay for a night.
The owner is a very impressive man from Holland (I believe) who was a chef for Lucille Ball among other celebrities in Los Angeles. I think you can read his bio on the site.
