History

Established in 2006.

The location of Prudden Place is rich in history and it’s story should live on. This section of Lansing was a hub of activity and an important building block in our industrial rise as a city. We are proud to give the Prudden Place location back to the people of Lansing, so it can once again find life and become an important component in the revitalization of downtown Lansing.

The location of Prudden Place is adjacent to one of downtown Lansing’s important industrial founders. The «Prudden Building» was originally founded as the Lansing Wheel Company in 1855 by William K. Prudden, which supplied wheels for R.E. Olds’ first gasoline powered vehicles. This company also manufactured wheels for the Ford Motor Company, who used the same wheels in assembling their No. 174 900 Model T 1913 automobile.

By 1896, it was the largest producer of wooden wheels in the world. Not only does the building itself still remain, but the smoke stack labeled «Prudden» still stands proudly.
