Great soup. Great atmosphere. Service is good. It can be a wait to get in sometimes but it is worth it.

Always a good meal and service. Had the smoked brisket seasonal homemade pasta fantastic! Pork schnitzel was excellent.

Everything on the breakfast menu looked delicious, but in reality, it was fairly average.

Went there for lunch with my mom and son. We were seated right away, and had our drink order taken. The waitress at first seemed intentive to our table.
Our food was brought out in a timely manner, within in five minutes of our food being brought out we were asked how it was and that was the last time our waitress stopped by during our meal. She never stopped by to refill drinks, but managed to drop the bill off. We waited twenty minutes for her to come back to the table to collect our payment, but after twenty minutes we were going to be late for an appointment, and handed the payment to another employee. At that time our waitress spotted us leaving, and when we told her another employee has the bill with the payment she seemed aggravated.

I love the atmosphere of Soup Spoon and the food is great as well! We always order the burgers and the soup and it’s been delicious every time! The staff is also great, and the wait never seems to be too bad for smaller parties.

I asked my Dad if he wanted to get breakfast at Soup Spoon while I was in town and he was like «Absolutely not the last time I went there the wait was 45 minutes and I don’t wait that long for anything I will never go there again!» A few days later my Mom joined the fight and we managed to convince him the wait wouldn’t be so bad at 8am on a Wednesday. Lo and behold, we were seated immediately upon walking in the door! Cute place. Friendly service. My Café Benny was good. The coffee was good. The menu was quite different than most of the breakfast places in the Lansing area, which is great! Oh, and my stubborn father goes there all the time now and it’s one of his favorite breakfast joints. Yay!

The bread pudding gets 5 stars it’s extremely sweet and delicious you definitely need to love sweet desserts for this one, the seafood chowder gets 4 stars as it was extremely yummy and the bruschetta was pretty basic nothing too exciting and exhilarating taste wise but I was trying to order something a little healthier, not too heavy and not a salad. The lamb burger was savory but I’ve had better in other cities, if you like lamb I think you’ll like it! This place definitely stands out in a place like Lansing where our options for great food are minimal but I will have to go back and try other menu items as well!

Pretty Good. This place is pretty good, lots on the menu looks good. Service is nice and friendly… the only problem is their popularity, it can be hard to get a table, not much you can do about that though.
Tonight my wife had the ribeye, everything on the plate was good. She ordered it medium, a few portions were medium rare, it was all really good, so this is just a little nitpick. I of course sampled her food, as a husband is oft to do.
I ordered the surf and turf, which was interesting in that it was braised shortrib with a blue crab potato pancake, not the typical steak & lobster. The shortrib was outstanding, I would have eaten a lot more of it. Really really good, it was all smothered in a spicy feta sauce, excellent. It came with feta bacon mashed potatoes, very good flavor, but a little dry. I think they could add some milk or cream or something. The potato pancake was good — but I tasted 0 crab in it, which is unfortunate because I really like blue crab, I just couldn’t taste it (nor could I see any in it). So that was disappointing. It all still tasted really good, I just think it needed more crab if you’re going to call it a blue crab potato latke.
I had the french onion soup, you can tell it had wine in the broth, which is nice, but ultimately it isn’t the best I’ve had. I tend to get it anywhere, Gilbert and Blakes probably still has the best in Lansing. My wife had a cheese & bean soup, it was good… if it was thicker it would have made a great queso/​dip.

Great place for breakfast or brunch. It can get busy in the mornings but it’s definitely worth the wait. Staff are friendly, price point and serving sizes are good and food is excellent! During peak hours it can sometimes take a while to get food but again… worth it! It’s also locally owned which is always a plus!

All I have to say is YUM! I loved the breakfest options. I ordered the Eggs Benedict with crab cakes which was very good and well priced. I also ordered a rosemary sausage and it was very good but you have to like rosemary or you will not like it. The service was good and everyone was kind to me. I will be back! Also the side of the restaurant is very cool and chalk is available to write on the walls!

Had the baja scramble and was not let down. Love the atmosphere of this place too. The house made potatoes were amazing and our waitress made sure we never ran out of coffee!

Soup Spoon Café is a Lansing institution. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner, and they have a liquor license now. I stopped in last weekend for the first time since I’ve moved from Lansing (about 4 years ago). We got there at 9:30 on Saturday and only had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated. The whole place was full, though!
The menu is full of interesting choices, with fresh local ingredients used whenever possible. I picked the Black Forest Omelet, a three egg omelet with Canadian bacon, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes and gruyère topped with traditional hollandaise. My boyfriend had the Irish scramble, housemade corned beef hash topped with grilled bell peppers, melted cheddar, green onions and two eggs any style. My omelet was great! I loved the combination of the vegetables with the traditional ham and cheese. The hollandaise was not great, though. It had separated a bit and was overly acidic. My boyfriend’s scramble had a lot of flavor but the corned beef hash was a bit lacking — I wished it was more meaty!
Service was great even though it was a full house. I have to say that I agree with someone else who used the phrase «Lansing good.» When I was in college, Soup Spoon Café was my go-​to, definitely one of the best local places. However, now that I’ve lived in Grand Rapids, I can’t say it’s anywhere near Cherie Inn, Marie Catrib’s, San Chez, or any of the other places I love to go for breakfast in GR. That said, I won’t hesitate to go when I’m in town!

I walked in on a Saturday morning and there was 15 people waiting to be sat. The hostess kindly walked up to us and asked us if we would like to sit at the bar immediately and we gladly accepted.
The bartender looked out of place, but after watching her for a few minutes I realized she was terrific. She was taking care of over 10 eaters and making drinks all in the same. She took out order refilled our drinks and coffee and was on her game. The thing I liked most about her was that although she may have been working non-​stop, she was very calm and controlled in everything she did. I felt very happy that she was taking care of me, it really made my experience awesome.
I got the veggie breakfast sammy (breakfast sandwich) which came with hash browns. I ordered a side of the marble toast. The food was average to better than average, but for a Saturday in Lansing, it’s hard to find food, so it was probably one of the better things I could have eaten.
Cons: these things did not bother me, and may not affect the normal eater, but I had to make note. They had a weird system for washing dishes where they would dip them in what looked like a first soak with a machine running then follow with two rinses. The whole process took we seconds, for they just dipped, dipped and dipped. Cups came out spotty and I questioned if it was even sanitary. Secondly, the Hash browns were wet in butter. I prefer my hash browns dryer and crispy. They have the soggy type. Oh well.
Pros: the atmosphere was good and the people were great. We held conversations with strangers sitting next to us, and it was a great start to my morning.
Overall: The food left a little to be desired, mainly because of the Unilocal hype. The atmosphere and service was amazing. My 3 star rating is essentially a is 4 star rating, however I rarely give 5 stars. 3 stars means I would eat here again, 4 stars means I am going to come here again for sure and 5 stars means I’m bringing my mom to eat it 2 days in a row.

From the moment I walked through those doors, I was greeted with a casual, but fierce, woman: Jessica. The table was set with menus for all, polished silverware, and fully stocked salt and pepper shakers. We got the goods. Jessica then brought me my perfectly compiled sandwich, The Windy City. I then devoured this sandwich; a decision I do not regret. Jessica was great. The food was great.
It really is a world away from your monotonous 9 — 5.

This is a good place. I like everything from their breakfast offerings to the lunch and dinner. I love the soups and the specials they have, which vary. They also have great brews on tap including some from Brewery Vivant.
The Smoked Salmon Benny and Johnny Cakes (Cornmeal pancakes) are unique and great tasting. The Cubano and Peacemaker Sandwiches are also really good. That said, I like a couple breakfast places in and around town a little better and I have an all time favorite Cuban sandwich place I prefer.
However you can get all those types of meals at Soup Spoon Café. When you account for a variety in the menu, great beer, awesome coffee and friendly service, Soup Spoon Café is a stand out in Lansing. It’s my go to place when taking friends and family out to breakfast and lunch. It’s also one on the top places I recommend to out of town visitors.

It pains me to write this because at one time, Soup Spoon was one of my favorite Lansing restaurants. I moved away from the area but I came back to visit my bestie so we decided to go out for dinner. It was a Monday night, we sat down at the bar. The bartender didn’t seem particularly friendly but he took our drink orders and gave us menus.
We ordered and I said and I quote «We’ll start with the cherry bomb shrimp and for my entrée, I’d like the short rib». My friend then proceeds to order a salad as her entrée. So we sat and talked and I was getting hungry. I look at my phone and almost 30 minutes has elapsed since our order. Then I notice my friend’s salad sitting in the window.
Finally, the bartender delivers the salad and the cherry bomb shrimp at the same time. Well, about two minutes later my short rib arrives. So it was just weird. Who puts out the appetizer with the entrees? It was annoying. Then after that, he pretty much forgets about us. We both wanted another drink but he was so engrossed him a female duo who was apparently well known to him that all other customers be damned.
He finally made us another round like we were just totally inconveniencing him. My short rib was tasty but the amount of food I received for $ 18 was ridiculous. I got, literally, 3 oz of meat, maybe one leaf of swiss chard chopped up, and the potatoes au gratin were the size of a golf ball. Thank goodness I got the shrimp because otherwise I would have been starving. So for the price, I think it has gotten outrageous.

Tasty lunch and breakfast date with very friendly service. We stopped in at Soup Spoon on an MSU game day wanting to avoid the craziness of East Lansing before dropping my sister off at MSU. There was a short wait (7 – 10 minutes) but the host was very cordial and asked us if we wanted a drink. Two coffees and a water, and before we knew it our party of three was seated.
I had the pumpkin bisque, which was very interesting and unique. It was sort of sweet and spicy, and was garnished with whipped cream. It did have a tasty, savory aspect to it and it was very filling! After that I had the Georgia Rueben, which is your basic turkey Rueben with slaw and thousand island. It was sort of small for a restaurant sandwich but I found it to be rich and filling. I had it alongside the any gratin potatoes which were good but really heavy and greasy– if you have a sensitive stomach I would skip that.
My sister had the «French Toast Stack» which sounded better than it was. Don’t get me wrong, it was ok French toast, but the strawberry cream cheese filling was obviously just Philadelphia smattered in between the toasts. Meh. The bacon was super crispy though.
Last but not least my wife has the Cape Cod Omelette. It was a 3 egg omelet with tasty clam chowder-​esque filling. It was served with a nice portion of potatoes and an English muffin. It was so very tasty. As I walked around the place, I noticed that the breakfasts looked a little better than the lunch so I need to come back and have some breakfast sometime!

I was surprised by the large portions and the quality of the food at Soup Spoon Café, especially for the price! Service was a little slow but friendly. The wait was worth it. The shrimp voodoo pasta had a mild kick.
If you’re doing carry out, order ahead of time. My order took nearly 40 minutes and the place wasn’t busy on a weekday.
