History

Established in 2009.

Wanting to carry on my great grandmother’s legacy, who was the owner of the original Sugar Shack on Pennsylvania Avenue in Lansing in the 1960’s, I decided to move back to Lansing, Michigan and open again, the Sugar Shack in Memory of her.

Cupcakes are king at Sugar Shack, and most aren’t the typical palm-​sized sweets you can cook at home in a pan of 12. A rotation of more than a dozen different cupcake and frosting flavors keeps the daily special menu fresh, with a couple of options available for takeout every day. We also specialize in gourmet cookies, brownies, and freshly homemade pies.

The sugar shack is a unique family owned and operated company providing products and services to Lansing and the surrounding communities. With over a combined 90+ years of experience, we are focused on providing fast and friendly customer service. Through knowledge and experience, we are prepared to offer the best practical solutions of a wide variety in, ingredients, packaging, and other services

Great service! Delicious cupcakes! I ordered cupcakes to be delivered to my sister who is currently interning at MSU for the summer. Yesterday was her birthday and I don’t think she had any way to celebrate. Adrian was very accommodating and even added toppers and had the delivery driver (grubhub) sing to her. Thank you for helping make my sister’s day great!

Everything tastes like sugar only — there is very little flavor to most of their baked goods (or frozen poppers). I don’t bother coming anymore as I want my extra calories to be sinful and flavorful.

Used to absolutely love their cupcakes, especially the gourmet ones. But lately they’ve been over cooked, dry and tough as heck. Have called them to let them know, but they don’t seem to have changed anything. It’s been like this for over 6 months. Disappointing.

Bought 4 at just over $ 15.00. I have bought from them before and enjoyed them. Not sure what happened or if they were day old but the cake was really dry and tough. The frosting was gritty and way too sweet. I was disappointed on this purchase.

I just had to say that we order from here every time I have a cheat day and it’s consistently delicious! The sugar cookie is my favorite! The only reason it isn’t 5 stars is there isn’t much variety in the way of cupcakes and I wish they had more than just cookies, cupcakes, and brownies but if ur looking for a sugar fix I highly recommend this place!

They live up to their name. Literally.
I like their sweet treats. They are well decorated and tasty but they verge on the border of too sweet. Teeth cringing sweet. The texture of the cup cake on my most recent visit was very dense and it seems the frosting was more flavorful than the cupcake. Not to my liking for cup cakes. I prefer a lighter texture and fluffy cupcake with reasonably sweet frosting that has just as much flavor as the cupcake.
They are good but a little too much for my teeth and tastebuds. I’d tone the sugar down and the lemon, mango, lime and or almond flavor up.

I have gotten cupcakes and cookies from here several times, and have to say that I love their cookies, but am not super crazy about their cupcakes. The cupcakes’ flavors are pretty good, and they’re pretty, but they have way too much icing for my personal taste. You’ve gotta try their Maple Pecan cookies, they’re my favorite!

I will never order from Sugar Shack again. Everything was overpriced and tasted terrible. The cupcakes are bland and dry. The frosting isn’t much better. The cookie dough poppers were just dried out rocks. The cookies were similar and nothing special. Worst of all might have been the scoop cake, which was just a gross, stale upside down cupcake with drippy ice cream and candies tacked on top. I imagine the only reason this place stays in business is the fact that they deliver.

Holy cupcake! I can’t believe I have not been here before. I love that they are open on Sundays, huge plus. Everything is delicious sugary goodness. Cute and cozy inside. Weird that the entrance into the hair place is through the store, and I can see where parking on a busy day would be a problem. Nice service and I will be back.

Pros:

–they have strawberry pie!!! I’ve looked everywhere for this and can’t seem to find it — will be back to try it

–they have this awesome sign that says they’ll help you when you finish your cell phone calls (I HATE people who are on their cells when I talk, haha)
–really good cookies! Crispy on the outside, melts in your mouth on the inside. in fact, SO good that a week later, when I gave my cookie to a friend, he immediately said, «whoa…that is goooooood…»
–good cupcakes! A lot of frosting that made it too sweet, but I just didn’t eat it all. My apple crisp cupcake was also kinda grainy inside, which I liked!
Cons:
–small parking lot, and I see it getting crowded easily

$ 3.50 for a cupcake. I can only guess the price was based on size and not flavor. The cake had a muted flavor and could have been anything. The red-​hot flavored frosting was decent but out of proportion to the cake.
They also have pies on display with slices removed. This led me to believe I could order a slice. Boy, was I wrong! Don’t ask for a slice of pie – you won’t get one.

Nicest people who work there — open all hours but sadly, I was not impressed. They tried hard, but something about that frosting — yeow.
Nothing light and fluffy about it and it left an aftertaste. Not a good aftertaste —
Since the frosting is why I bother with a cupcake at all, it was disappointing. I know you guys are trying hard but I can’t get past that. I’ve been there once, never went back.

Not as good as my homemade cupcakes, and by homemade I mean from scratch, like sifting the flour, baking soda, and salt, and whipping the butter and confectioner’s sugar for real buttercream frosting. Forget the pre-​made cake mixes and canned frosting from the grocery store!
So, back to these cupcakes… my brother, who lives on the west coast, sent us a box of six regular cupcakes for my son’s birthday. The bakery called ahead of time to ask when we would be home, and they delivered when they said they would.
We got three kinds:
–yellow cake with chocolate frosting
–chocolate cake with chocolate frosting
–chocolate cake with white frosting
The cupcakes themselves were fairly good. The cake part wasn’t overly sweet, and the yellow cake was moist. The chocolate frosting was very good, but he didn’t like the white frosting – they may have added some sort of flavoring that he didn’t like. I couldn’t tell – it tasted fine to me.
Overall, a definite win if you’re looking for a place that delivers cupcakes!

Just ordered six cupcakes for a friend who had gone through a bad breakup. They came to my door half an hour late, smashed all together. I called to complain and the person on the phone was very apologetic and offered to send more out by her personal driver rather than the delivery company they use. I told her I would call her back after talking to my friends.
She called me half an hour later and was even more apologetic. She said she had been on the phone with the owner and was worried that we had tried to call back and she had missed us. We decided to come in rather than wait for another delivery. She not only gave us six more cupcakes but threw in two for free and a kiddy cupcake with a «Thomas the Tank Engine» ring for my daughter — she was thrilled!
The customer service at this bakery is unparalleled and they have certainly not lost me as a customer. I may not be back soon because my waistline wouldn’t be able to handle it, but I will tell everyone I know about this place!

Delicious cupcakes and fair prices. Their regular cupcakes are good, though not super amazing. They definitely hit the spot; and if you’re buying cupcakes to share, their cost for a dozen is great. They also have nice gourmet cupcakes, which you can buy by the half dozen for a decent price. Those are really good, I think. Solid cupcake shop for the Lansing/​EL area.

I finally had a chance to swing by on a Thursday to try the long desired Elvis and Tiramisu cupcakes. The Elvis was mindblowing… it was like a fresh, flavorful banana had relations with some sugary peanut butter and made a fat baby. Best dessert choice at SS thus far. Worth the trip.
I was a bit let down by the Tiramisu cupcake. It was «just good», but was my least favorite of the five types I’ve had. It lacks some flavor… I think more coffee or mocha would help.
On that down note, I do want to add that although others seems to be experiencing kind and delightful service, I received rather poor service on both visits. I believe this is where SS needs to focus their attention, because their treats are already wonderful. They never thank me or tell me to have a nice day, and no one smiles. They tried to hurry me out on both occassions, but they didn’t appear to be busy.
Perhaps the staff realizes that their desserts are so scrumptious that Lansingers will keep pouring in regardless of how their service is. I know I’ll return when I’m hankering some frosting.
