History

Established in 1994.

It all started back in 1994 when three friends opened their first barber shop. A look back to see how this all got started begins with a selection from a news article written almost 20 years ago.

~“Las Vegas Review Journal April 20, 1994″~ There is still something to be said for having a dream, working hard, believing in yourself and realizing the payoff. Just ask Mike, Curt, and Tim, the three new bosses of A Cut Above the Rest.

Theirs is a story about three young men from predominately black West Las Vegas who avoided the all-​too-​common fates of gangs, drugs, prison or violent death.

After five years of building their barber skills and saving their money, Michael Jones, Curtis Anderson and Timothy «Tim-​O» Wilkinson held a grand opening Tuesday of their barber shop.

Now fast forward to TODAY and in a few short months «A Cut Above the Rest» will be celebrating our 20th anniversary!

DO NOT GO HERE!!! Visiting Vegas $ 15 ride Über both to and from this barbershop. Pics on website look great! The $ 30 line up I got wasn’t. $ 30 for a line up and the shop isn’t even nice. I just got a haircut on Monday back home all he had to do was follow the line. Widened my parts smh, Never again! I had to keep asking him to clean my neck up still hair there. Barber on left side in back far left…

Not your average barber shop. They take care of each person as if you’re family. Jordan faded me up and made sure I was happy with everything. from my design to my fade, and the length of my hair. After he was finished, he even made sure I didn’t want it shorter because he thought it looked a bit long. Great environment with great people. Definitely a go to place if you’re in the area and need a fade.

I noticed this place when I was walking out of Veggie Nation. It is right next door. I walked in to ask how much they charge to line up my beard. $ 18 for a shave is a pretty good price. I gave them a try. Jordan did a great job. It’s a cool little shop and everyone there is very friendly. Come check this place out. It is worth the drive downtown.

Went in looking for a clean up cut and not expecting much. Curtis did his thing and blew my mind. He did an awesome job and exceed my expectations. I will definitely will return next time I need a cut and in Vegas. I’m glad I took a little walk pass the Fremont Experience.

Wow this is a damn good place to get your haircut. I always have gone to china town to get my haircut but it always hasn’t been a fun experience. So with my great genetics my hair needed a shaving so I looked for a place to get a cut. Found really good reviews about this place so I said fuck it time to get a haircut .
Upon arival I was a bit taken back with parking, turns out next to the tatto shop these stupid meter you have to feed with coins .
The experience was great had an athentic feel to it. Getting my haircut was pretty long, about an hour but it was worth it. I asked what I wanted and they deliverd. Sitting there was pretty boss listening to what they are talking about. After the cut he showed me and I thought he messed up. Hell naw .And the man who was cutting my hair his boys birthday so I gave him a five .
Overall I recommend this place to anybody who wants to take some chill time and talk to some chill people and get a fresh haircut.

Been coming to Mike Jones for years now and his work ethic is like no other. He runs a professional environment with the old school Barbershop feeling. He doesn’t tolerate negativity from customers and barbers alike. All the barbers are hungry and professional. Even through the major redevelopment of downtown, Cut Above has weathered the storm and taken their business model to the next level to be accepting of a diverse crowd of customers.
If you’re a local or just visiting, stop by Cut Above for bit just a hair cut but a true experience.

Went in on a Friday afternoon around 4. My regular barber gave me some bad cuts and always takes way too long, so I figured I would give this place a shot. Walked in and got seated right away by the only white guy in the spot. I explained what I wanted and he got right to work. Seemed like I was an inconvenience to him the whole time. Heavy handed with the clippers and sloppy as hell. I asked for a bald fade with a combover. The fade is super choppy and not smooth at all. At least my old barber took his time while I was in the chair. Quality over quantity fellas. Seems like I can’t find a middle ground where the barber knows how to cut the way I need and who is at least focused and doesn’t leave me sitting in the chair for an hour and fifteen minutes.
I was in the chair for literally 7 or 8 minutes and the guy had the nerve to charge 25.00. He didn’t bring out a straight razor to make sure my edges were clean. He didn’t take the time to make sure the part in my hair was clean. I gave him the 25.00 and on my way out heard the other barbers and patrons making some comment about «flexing on them» as I walked out. Last time I’ll be going to this place. They need to charge an unrealistic amount to keep their location. No customer service. Crappy cut. Won’t be back.

I live in downtown and just moved from Richmond Virginia, this place is a couple blocks away so very convenient. Got a cut by TJ who is the son of the owner. Really cool vibe in there and TJ is really good with the clippers and uses a razor! Also gotta love the old school hot towel before he used anything!

I was in Vegas from out of town for my wedding and I was worried about not knowing any local barbers but Mike Jones took care of me lined me up and sent me on my way with a smile on my face. Anyone from out of town don’t hesitate and head straight to A Cut Above The Rest the team will take care of all your needs!!!

I got a haircut from this barbershop, mostly because of the reviews. The barber shop had a very upbeat vibe, many barbers singing along to R&B or whatever was playing. It’s your typical «black» barbershop with that typical vibe. More positive than a typical Supercuts, but lacks the style of FINO, for example.
I got a good but not spectacular haircut. The barber mostly used clippers which I think is a cheaper way to do it.
I nicked a few stars for:
— being charged $ 25 when the price is $ 20 (I wrote off $ 5 as the tip but I won’t come back and advise others not to).
— having the guy put gel in my hair when I asked not to.
Overall. is the place ok? Yes. Will you get a good men’s cut there? Probably. Is it above average? Not to me. Worth $ 25? Absolutely not.

Will never go to another Barbershop! Troy not only takes the time with my four year old but my four year old doesn’t mind taking time with him.
Not to mention he has my son looking absolutely adorable anytime we visit. He gets compliments afterwards for days! The shop is in the newly renovated downtown area with cute restaurants and entertainment within walking distance. So if you have to wait… You’re in a good place to do it.

They gave my boyfriend a great haircut took him a couple of tries in different barbers to find the right one for a fade and this one is it. They know how to cut hair.
They probably won’t cut your hair after 5, but that’s why you should set appointments or come earlier than that.

I gave these guys a chance and they failed miserably. Like a previous poster said, don’t even try to get a cut after 5pm! They advertise that they are open until 6pm, but I got there at 5:15 on a Friday and I had to beg to get a cut. Dude eventually said he would cut me and I waited 45 minutes for the cut. At 5:30pm two more people came in for cuts and were turned away! How can a place advertise they are open until 6pm and send people away a half an hour before they close! During my cut the barber took breaks to watch tv, talk on the phone, and to chit-​chat with people coming in and out from the street.
This place tries spin that «Classic Barbershop» nonsense. But the truth is this place is rundown with secondhand furniture and decorations. They put the absolute minimum investment in the barbershop and it shows in the environment.
Not to mention, they advertise prices like $ 14 for a haircut online. However, dude charged me $ 32 for my haircut. So proceed with caution, seems like the barbers at this shop make-​up prices as they chose.

Professional. Courteous. And Efficient. O and 1 of my good friends works here too. I wouldn’t suggest you go anywhere else but HERE. Best barbershop in town. They can have my money allday. They can cut line up any hairline and cut any DO. So get yo ASS down here cause the line always long… lol

Needed a haircut and found myself in downtown, so thought I’d give this barber shop a try. I’m probably not their target demographic, but hair is hair, right? Ended up with an average haircut for slightly more than I was hoping to pay. The Unilocal pictures showed $ 14 for a haircut but I think it ended up being $ 20 when I came in. Quite the price hike! Probably won’t come back to this place again as there’s some other cheaper barbers in Vegas.

Unilocal says this place is open until 6 PM. I walked all the way over here… about 10 blocks. When I walked in at 5:10 PM, I was told by the barber that they close at 5PM. I thought that was interesting since they have printed on the door that they were open until 6PM. Personally, I just feel like he didn’t feel like cutting any more hair that day and so he told me they were closed. #whatevs

Man this place is the spot in Vegas! That have two sides of barbers and everyone cuts good! Been coming here for years and my kids love it here too! They just recently remodeled this area in downtown Las Vegas, and it is always nice to see black owned companies make it. A cut above the rest is the best!

Just got my hair cut somewhere else which actually influenced me to write this review. I don’t know why I decided to try somewhere else after going to A Cut Above. Partly because it’s a little far from me, partly because I wanted to see what else was out there. I looked for convenience over quality that I know and trust.
Mistake.
I’m now in regret mode after getting paying too much for a less than decent hair cut. Definitely going back to a cut above from now on to get a quality cut at a good price.

Never the F again. I walk in because I always make it a point to support downtown biz. Dude points at me like I’ve got you. Another dude walks over asks if I have a barber yet? I say the guy over there said he’s got me but I don’t care I just want something different. He asked me like what? Other dude didn’t ask. So I’m thinking second dude who has long hair like mine is the better choice. But first dude and another dude start fighting and it actually got loud! Next thing I know errbody has an opinion. I walked out. I feel bad tho. The owner followed me out to try and make the situation better. I went off. Truly went off. Sorry owner dude. Most uncomfortable situation you can imagine.
