I’ve taken several classes with John Kern at Combat Tactical Academy and each one was terrific. John is a patient, articulate and thorough instructor. His classes are fun, educational and exhausting. His assistant instructors are great too. His Utah partner Chauncy is one of the best shooters I’ve seen, aside from John. If you are looking for instruction in firearms this is the place. Fun, safe and professional. Both of my adult daughters have trained with John and Chauncy. Pistol, shotgun or rifle this is where you should train.

My first experience with combat tactical was awesome. I took a CCW course with them and they let my husband in the course with me with very little notice. After this course I took another CCW course with my daughter I felt John is an awesome instructor. Me and my husband enjoyed the course so much that we took there two day hand gun course again awesome. The time that was taken with each and every student was great no one was just left on there own. John and his staff are very patience and understanding. Mirelle is great to talk to gives lots of effort for you and understanding. If you would like to learn to shoot and feel confident about it I recommend John Kern and his staff to get you comfortable and confident in handling your gun. Thanks Combat Tactical hope to take another course soon.

I recently purchased a handgun at a gun show and got my CCW. Have just started shooting and really wanted to get comfortable with my weapon. My boyfriend and I decided to take this class. We had talked about doing Frontsight before I met John and his wife at a gun show. This class was WAY more reasonable in terms of price and seemed to cover all the same things. I couldn’t have enjoyed the class more! From the curriculum, to the drills to the instructors, it was a perfect mix. The guys were both funny and fun, yet, engaging and serious when it needed to be. My boyfriend and I were laughing one minute and going into shooting our weapons the next. On the way home we were both shouting their praises and actually disappointed to go home after a weekend of «school»! :) I improved leaps and bounds under their instruction. WHen I came to the class I had probably shot 4 times in my life. When I left, I shot a nearly perfect score on the test and feel totally safe understanding my ability and mechanics of my weapon. We are already dying for the level 2 handgun and I think I’m even going to try a rifle! Thanks so much Combat Tactical Academy for a great weekend, great information and an affordable program.

After seeing my review on Unilocal Mirelle contacted my wife and apologized for the misunderstand and promptly sent us a refund for our deposit.
Just to be clear deposits are generally nonrefundable so this should be made clear prior to signing up for the course. I would suggest creating a form approved by a lawyer that states the terms that both parties sign so they isn’t any further misunderstandings.
It would also be easier for people to gear up for your courses if you provided direct links from your website to items on your store so people can easily buy items needed for your courses or at the very least see an example of what they need to buy.
A tip I got from a retired law enforcement officer is to make sure the place you take these courses teach you what is legal to do in your state. Since I didn’t take the course I am unclear if they do that or not. Given the George Zimmerman case I would highly recommend asking prior to signing up.
This review is based on a bad customer service experience with the company when trying to ask for my deposit back. There was nothing in the materials provided at course signup that our deposit was nonrefundable. Had we known that the deposit was nonrefundable we would not have signed up for the course given my wife’s work situation which was made very clear to Mirelle.
So any reviewer questioning the integrity of my review is out of line. Just because you had a positive experience with this company doesn’t invalidate those that don’t.

Wow, I’m not sure what happened with the prior reviewer, since my experience could not have been more different. We signed up at a Cashman Gun Show event, and my wife attended class having just purchased a new pistol. She attended the class which I was unable to make, shot the pistol, decided she didn’t like it, was given a stock pistol from John Kern to use, and finished the class. She had nothing but praise for the teaching methods, and she is a professional trainer, and curriculum. She didn’t pass the first time through, but John and Mirelle worked with us to schedule enough class time that she passed the second time. I took the level I handgun class, and I cannot say enough about the level of instruction, or the instructors who were teaching.
As a long time shooter, I’ve learned more with John and his team of instructors than I had been taught by professional instructors in two countries over 40 years. I’ve had some scheduling conflicts, and always been able to get them resolved.
Could not and would not recommend any other group for firearms instruction.
As a post script.
I purchased a pistol magazine holster to replace the canted mag holders that I currently use for my Springfield XD (M) 9 mm. Did not receive my product at the level II pistol class. Contacted John, and he remembered my purchase, which was in cash and in person, but then wanted a receipt, which obviously he did not provide. Have yet to receive the product or a refund. I’m writing this off as a bad purchase on my part, but my recommendation is for people to ask for and ensure they receive proof of purchase, even for the smallest things.
