Elite Event: Happy Hour of the Dead @ La Comida

Awesome. Awesome. Awesome. That’s all I really should say.
It would be like that movie Being John Malcovich. Awesome awesome awesome… awesome awesome awesome.
This was SUCH a great event. Thank you Drew and Molly for organizing this.
I really enjoyed this place, the food, the service, the people and the event. All were 5 stars. They had the restaurant sectioned off for our event, and that always makes me feel like a big shot. They had a TON of drinks and food on offer. They had 4 different margaritas, and each were unique and pleasing.
There were a ton of appetizers going around as well. The corn on the cob was SO good. I really enjoyed that.
I loved that the owner and head chef came out to talk to us and answer questions and tell us about each dish. That was cool.
VERY attentive staff, good food and good drinks. I’ll be back for sure!

Michelle and I were lucky enough to be in Las Vegas at the same time frame as this event. We checked in with Molly and felt so welcome from the get go. Grabbed a spot at the bar and had a choice of four different margaritas (my favorite being the blood orange). Guacamole and chips on the bar. Nice layout with exposed brick walls lots of seating and windows that opened up the front of the building.
Drew thanked everyone for coming and La Comida for hosting us and announced that Philly was in the house. It was then we met the coolest Unilocaler ever, Jessica M. She invited us to join the funnest table in the «joint» twith Brian P and Vanessa N. (I know I missed a few others. sorry). The tuna tostadas, mexican corn, shrimp ceviche, tortilla soup shooters, chorizo queso fundido and the tacos made the rounds. Everything was fresh and delicious. The owners and the chef all spoke about their passion and it showed in the food. Our new friends so so much fun that before I knew it the event was over.
Thank you Drew and Molly for hosting us East Coasters, thank you La Comida and a big thank you to our new Unilocal friends. If you ever make it out to Philly make sure to give ua a holla.

I have always loved La Comida and usually get their organic salad and a side of guac when I go there.
We sat outside and had a wonderful people watching experience that night LOL!
There were lots of non veg options going around the table so I asked one of the waiters if there were going to be any veg friendly options and he said «SURE!» A few minutes later they actually brought Amanda M. and I the Gardien chkn tacos! I had tried them here before and I knew how filling there are. I ate one and gave the other to Michael K.
I honestly think I ate my weight in guac that night… I can not get enough!!!
Our table rocked out TONS of margaritas My fav was a mixture of any two that I had at the time! See my pics of the layers of alcohol yumminess :) I drank tooooo many of them and might have the diabeetus now :(
I went back that Saturday to eat some more guac after the MAM march and that time I brought my own chips. I wish they would declare all non-​GMO. I know the owner supports most organic and local but it would be super awesome to rock out non-​GMO chips :) I saw the manager and thanked him again for having us that night and he was glad I returned.
I really wish I would not have been a wuss and had gotten my face painted!!!

This by far was the BESTEST elite event EVER!!! I mean EHV-​VERR!!! Now I may have been bias as I’ve had La Comida bookmarked for months now. And what better way to check this place out but through a theme: Day of the Dead!!! AMAZENESS!!!
Anyway, the ambiance of the restaurant sets you up for a delectable experience. I adore the Mexican theme played all throughout the whole venue. The vibe just works. Having tables adorned with Unilocal swag helps out a lot too. ;) I snagged me a few mint tins, a dope Unilocal fan, and an even doper sweatband.
The food tastes sooooo good. I didn’t want to come across as the hoarder as I definitely was having seconds but I know I could have had fourths. All of them are my favorites but if I must choose definitely the corn and tuna tostadas. And what was up with those endless margaritas??? Are you trying to make me stumble out of this place!!! Very yummy and very potent.
I enjoyed getting my face painted all muerte! I missed her name but the face painter was really friendly and obviously creative from the looks of all those who got painted. I had a mini photo shoot with my makeup. I even made my lovely plus one, Lisa, take pictures of me while we walked back to our cars — Downtown Vegas makes awesome backdrops!!!
But the best part of this event was helping out a local charity, Because of the Heart, by bringing our food donations or, ahem, food offerings to appease those restless spirits.

One of the best Elite Events I have been to! The food was an embarrassment of riches. Please dont ask me to pick a favorite. I also need to add the rainbow of margaritas. I had enough of those to put W.C. Fields out of commission. The staff could not have been nicer or more gracious, I will be back! I suggest you do the same! Live It Up You Are In Las Vegas For Cryin’ Out Loud!

I almost wrote this entire review en español but I will try to keep it to a minimum. Any place that rocks the Yeah Yeah Yeahs right after some Hector Lavoe tunes deserves more than five stars in mi libro. I thought I was at Frida Kahlo’s house in Coyoacán just walking to the entrance of the restaurant. I tried some good guacamole and the kitchen staff was so nice to make Gardein chik’n tacos for the vegetarians, but the margaritas were definitely las estrellas of this event. The passion fruit, prickly pear, and blood orange versions were awesome, and the guava tasted more like grapefruit. It felt just like Margarita Mondays when I was in college. I was a margarita esnob so I would make drinks with premium tequila and fresh squeezed juices, or grapefruit margarita mix from Williams-​Sonoma if I was being lazy. I’d definitely return to La Comida for more margaritas during Happy Hour. Sounds good right now!
Besides the neverending margaritas, I was impressed that they brought so many different plates for us to try! The elote asado had too much parrilla flavor for me, but I do love the flavor of fresh corn just dripping with mayonnaise and cheese. We were seated on the patio, where Ms. Las Vegas gave us a lesson on the difference between a Mexican and a Mexican’t. After four margaritas or so, I noticed that the face painter wasn’t busy and I definitely needed my face all Day of the Dead-​ed up! She did a great job, because my daughter was scared when she saw me.

I realize not all are lucky enough to be able to attend an event that starts at 4pm, but for those of us that could we enjoyed the heck out of La Comida! Bottomless margaritas, delicious food, fun music and face painting — and all for a good cause (food donations).
Unfortunately Shane N. and I arrived about 5 mins. late, due to 2 accidents on I-​15. Because of that we ended up sitting sort of by ourselves at a table away from all the action. We still enjoyed ourselves and the staff was so wonderful! Several people walking around serving up various drinks and food tastings, almost as much as one might want… and some items even more than we wanted! It was a gorgeous afternoon and many enjoyed the patio area, while the rest of us enjoyed the fresh air coming in through the open doors.
There was so much food! We got missed on a few items so we didn’t get to try the ribs and honestly, the burger wasn’t my favorite. But I loved loved loved the guacamole! I enjoyed the taco, the tuna tostada (I think I had 4 or 5 of those), the shrimp ceviche, and the pork shoulder. The corn was a little buttery and over seasoned for my liking but that didn’t keep me from finishing it! I ate more than I should have and tried several different drinks, although I didn’t finish a single one. :)
I don’t frequent East Freemont, so it was fun to try out a place that I otherwise likely wouldn’t have ever found. La Comida truly has great food and tasty margaritas! Seeing that they also have amazing happy hour drink specials, I’m sure we’ll soon find our way back here.

Time to heap my five starts on top of everyone else’s!
I’m glad to see a Unilocal event where we can give back to the community. Dropping off food donations to the homeless and less fortunate is a great way to kick-​off any event.
To begin, La Comida is a beautiful restaurant that really captures the look and feel of a Mexican cantina. The walk-​up window and swing by the bar are a great touch. The swinging saloon doors for the bathrooms were interesting and I was amused at the use of pictures of Mary and Jesus to specify the men and women restrooms.
Service was great, you really see the passion from the owner and chef trickle down to everyone else. Downtown is a perfect place for this restaurant.
In terms of food, La Comida pulled out all the stops. With in a matter of minutes every table was swimming in margaritas and appetizers. The carne asada tacos and guacamole were delicious. Chef Pauloma talked about the tropical influences on her style of Mexican cuisine and it turned out great. I have a special place in my heart for places that serve up drinks in mason jars and big props to La Comida for picking jars over the knock-​over prone skinny margarita glasses I see everywhere else. They had a great selection of mini-​maragaritas: blood orange, prickly pear, guava, and passion fruit.
Again big shout-​out to Molly, Drew, Victoria and the awesome face painter for another great Unilocal elite event!

Another great event! What else can one ask for when neverending margaritas keep coming around like if it was some kind of Oktoberfiesta! Great company, great great service, and great food. We got to try many items that they serve, the seviche, queso fundido and the elotes being my favorite. I wish I remember the names of the servers but all can say is that they were all great they made me feel like it was mi casa. This was not my first time at la comida and it definitely won’t be my last, there are so many items on the menu that I still need to try.
Thank you Drew and Molly for putting together this wonderfull event! Thank you everyone at La Comida for inviting us to your wonderfull casa and made us all feel bienvenidos! Also many thanx to the young ladies painting faces making this event fun and better looking! (Lol)

Another great event! Thanks to Drew for setting this tasty and fun event up! Molly was there to check us is in and take our food donations and the La Comida staff worked non-​stop taking care of us. I can’t speak highly enough about how hard the staff worked. When the head Chef was introduced to us along with Jenna Morton, I was sad that a round of applause wasn’t offered to the rest of the amazing staff for everything they did. I took a moment to let a couple of our servers know that they deserved a round of applause as well and my hubby gave them each an individual tip for there awesome hard work.
The food started coming right away. I sat at a table with 4 other Unilocalers and laughed the whole time. it is always fun catching up with Unilocalers and meeting new ones. The chips and salsa were great. The chips came out nice and hot. The salsa tasted fresh, but was too spicy for me to continue to eat. My hubby loved it and could have just picked up the salsa bowl and drank it! Next came guacamole. This was the best part of the meal for me. The guac had good sized ‘cado chunks in it. The guac not only tasted fresh, but had just the right amount of spice in it for me to thoroughly enjoy. When small bites that involved seafood were brought to the table I politely passed on these items, but they looked pretty! Now comes the shocker, at least a shocker to those who actually know me. I ate a WHOLE burger! OK so it wasn’t your average size burger, but it wasn’t really «slider-​size» either. It had bacon on it and a chipotle sauce. I don’t know what was in the burger (another Unilocaler said chorizo) and I don’t care because it had so much flavor and tasted great! The margaritas kept coming to our table in flavors blood orange, guava, passion fruit and prickly pear. I only took a sip from each to see what they tasted like since I was the one driving us home, but found them tasty! Hubby liked the ‘ritas a lot! We also grubbed on pork shoulder, tortilla soup shots, steak tacos, tortillas (not made in-​house) with queso and chorizo and some really tasty street corn. Phew I’m still stuffed! Thanks for the fun times!

The restaurant was smaller than I expected, but cozy. I loved the décor and the cute little patio.
The servers were all REALLY great. The food was superb. We had a little bit of everything — delicious chips and salsa with homemade guac (which was a bit spicy, the way I like it). Also the tuna tostada and shrimp ceviche were 2 of my favorites. The street taco was great, and I am sad that I didn’t get to try the ribs. Additionally, the street corn had great flavor as well, and seemed to be a big hit! I liked the queso fundido, but it seemed to get cold and hard quickly, which made it difficult to get out of the dish (still delicious). The mexican slider was pretty tasty as well.
The best part was: we had a vegetarian at our table, and she didn’t want to say anything to the server. After so much food came out and she only ate guacamole, I mentioned to the server that we had a special request. They were more than happy to accomodate, and made her 2 special «faux» chicken tacos, along with her own order of queso fundido, minus the chorizo. While speaking to Jenna Morton, she mentioned that they pride themselves on accomodating any and all special requests, which is a BIG plus.
I am not a big tequila drinker, but I could manage a couple of the tasty margaritas that were offered. They were: prickly pear, passionfruit, guava and blood orange. All were delicious.
It was nice to meet a few new Unilocalers and to catch up with some old faces. As always, thank you to Drew and Molly for organizing this wonderful event. You both looked fabulous with your faces painted, as did everyone else who participated! I hope that a lot of food was collected for donation as well — I think this is something we should do at all events!

First, we all got to have our feel goods present by dropping off food donations. Yay for good deeds!
La Comida, for those of you who don’t know, used to be a Laundry Mat. Hand to Jesus (hey-​Zeus), for realz. This place has been transformed into the beautiful place we were invited to. The ambience starts once you see the restaurant, then that delightful little stroll down the little alley. Once you enter there a fully stocked bar with about a zillion tequilas and a swing!
As soon as I sat down, a server was over and welcomed me and offered me one of many margaritas! Olé! Soon my table was full of amazing Unilocalers. Chips, salsa, and guacamole soon arrived! The salsa was delicious, tasty, a hint of spicy and the guacamole was fresh and perfection.
We were bombarded with so many bites all of which were fresh, flavorful, and artistically presented. My favorite was that tuna tostada. I was over telling my fellow Unilocalers that it was «mouth sex» and one of the owners overheard me and said she’d have chef Pauloma (sp?) out to talk to me. Wow! Super impressed. Other stand outs were the Mexican corn, shrimp ceviche, tortilla soup shooters, chorizo cheese, the ribs. I didn’t get to try to the tacos, but I am sure they were amazing as well. Chef Pauloma explained to me that she is from a specific region in Mexico and that there are tropical influences in her food, how awesome was that plantain chip with the ceviche? Genius. She was kind and answered all my silly questions.
He blood orange margarita was delicious! Then I tried the prickly pear and the guava. I’m not a big tequila fan, my mind has been changed. And let’s talk about how freaking pretty that prickly pair color is!
Shout out to the lady painting faces! I gave her artistic freedom and she made me look like a day of the dead princess! Holla to Joseph for capturing the memories!

Lindsey had a margarita ready for me when I arrived. I think I tried all the margarita flavors but table aka the fun table had difficulty keeping track. My favorite flavors were the passion fruit and blood orange, but the light pink one was good too (guava, I think) I didn’t much care for the neon pink one, but I do want to bring my sister in to try it. It’s her favorite color. They were served in small mason jars, perfect for trying multiple flavors.
The standout food items were the sweet corn. It was delicious. The Tuna Tostada was pretty good. I could have easily had twenty of those. The Guac and salsa were both good, although I didn’t have that much of it… to busy filling up on delicious margaritas. Someone at my table didn’t much care for the chicken tacos, but I actually really liked them. Somehow I missed the tortilla soup, but I heard it was really good.
Staff was very good about keeping the food and margaritas coming… I never had an empty glass… usually I had my next one on deck while finishing the last of the other. I thought it was a nice special touch for the manager and chef to take the time to talk to us.
Face Painting. I jumped at the chance get my face painted. I love stuff like that. I thought she did a great job with everyone. She was friendly and even told me about why they would paint the dead’s faces. Because they were worried that the dead could talk. She said they would continue re-​painting the skulls. Sounds crazy to me.
More about my fun table. I had so much fun and definitely made some new friends. Thanks to Lindsey O, Angela T, Elizabeth B, and Amanda M for welcoming me so graciously. Angela taught me about drunk time traveling and we even realized that we went to the same high school. I event ended up with a alcohol related knee injury. I couldn’t ask for a better time.

Guava, Prickly Pear, Passion Fruit and Blood Orange Margarita overload! Oh my! La Comida rolled out the Rita Red Carpet for us. The drinks started coming as soon as we arrived and they never stopped.
This is a cool little spot with a nice patio area. The owner and the chef were great and they seemed to be enjoying themselves. When the owner and all the staff have a great attitude it can only trickle down to the customers and provide for a fabulous experience. Which is what we had. The service was fantastic. Seriously, I can’t say enough about the staff, they treated us like royalty.
I had a great time with the Unilocal crew! We drank and ate, donated food, face painted and had a great happy hour together. Big thanks to La Comida and to Drew, Molly and Victoria for the Elite love and fan-​freaking-​tastic events they have been putting together.

HOLY FOOD COMA! I was literally STUCK at this place because I couldn’t move!!!
I came from Bare pool’s closing party, so I’d already had a few and I was ready to EAT!!!
The food was SO fantastic!!! OMFGEEEEEEE.
My favorite items were… waaaaaaaiiiiiiiit for it!!! CEVICHE!!! Oh yes! This was SO BOMB I had several helping of it. Of course! My other VERY favorite was the STREET CORN!!! I ate two of them and I know the second one I should have stayed away from because I was BEYOND full and my tummy couldn’t stretch any further, but I just HAD to have it and it was DELICIOUS!
The tacos were also mighty good too! I also had the pork shoulder, queso (EXTRA cheesey with chorizo!) and sampled the Mexican burger, it had chorizo or something in it — good if you like chorizo, I just personally am not a fan of chorizo but it wasn’t bad!
The margarita’s came in cute little glasses and they were pretty freakin’ awesome too, especially since I am not a fan of tequila! Good stuff!
Oh and let’s not forget the guacamole and salsa! SO on point! NOM NOM NOM! I think I totally filled up from just those two items because they were SO good and I just kept shoveling the food into my mouth!
The waitstaff did an excellent job with keeping our thirst at bay, and our tummies full!
This was a totally fun happy hour event! YAAAAAAAY!

Thank you to the management of La Comida who put on a great happy hour of the dead for about 50 or so Elites. Drew and Molly were there to great us and even got their face painted. We were able to sample several margaritas including pear, guava, blood orange and passion fruit. The guava was the best! Several appetizers were served from mexican style burgers to ribs, tacos, queso, guacomole and chips, tuna on a chip, and cerviche. The presentation on the tapas sized portions were beautifully executed. The food had interesting flavors, mostly with a spicy kick. The guacomole was excellent, the salsa very spicy, and the queso bursting with flavor. I was a little disappointed the tortillas weren’t made in house.
I was lucky enough to sit with the always beautiful Tu Anh, her friend Amanda ???, Christie L and Marc who I hadn’t seen since La Belle Terre. I also ran into Lindsay O, Kayla, Jenny D, Ron from Pennsylvania Unilocal,and many more that unfortunately their names escape me due to the margaritas flowing through my veins.
It was a fun happy hour. I wish I could have stayed longer but parenting called.

Thank you Drew for planning this event at this delightful gem of a restaurant. One of the things I hate about Vegas is that everything is so new and lacking character. So once I walked in to La Comida and saw how charming it looked I was super excited. My husband and I sat down and were immediately offered a margarita to drink. I tried several flavors and especially like the blood orange. While they tasted great I think they were a little light on the tequila because I drank MANY of them and didn’t get intoxicated.
The service was outstanding and I thanked a couple of the servers for their great service (and of course left a nice tip too). They seemed sincere when they said they hoped they would see me again soon. I appreciated that they would take the time to explain what each dish was and always kept me going with another libation. I loved getting to meet the chef and really appreciated seeing it was a woman. In a male dominated field I like seeing that they provide an equal opportunity for women.
I loved most of the food I had. I especially enjoyed the ceviche. When they brought out the queso they had me at the mention of chorizo. I think I swooned a little at my table at that moment. I’m looking forward to going back and trying something new off the menu. My husband already plans to include La Comida in the pub crawl he is organizing for his high school reunion.
La Comida is totally my kind of place. Where else in town can I wash my hands in a holy water font? Thanks so much to La Comida for showing my husband and I a good time. We will be back soon.

Another Elite event in the books, and as always had a blast with all my fellow Unilocalers. La Comida was very generous with their offerings and it seemed like a never ending parade of colorful margaritas. I was able to try all 4 ‘ritas: prickly pear, blood orange, passion fruit, and guava and they were all very tasty. You could even tell there was alcohol in their drinks too! The waiters brought by various appetizers for us to try and among my favs were the chorizo queso fundido and bacon chipotle sliders. The staff at La Comida was wonderful and each item was explained to us as it was being served. The owner and head chef also stopped by each table to see how we were doing and answer any questions that we had. I am really glad we had an event here because I never would have known that they existed! I will definitely be coming back here, especially during happy hour (3 – 5 PM) for $ 5 ‘ritas!

Thanks to the Unilocal LV team for putting together an awesome event like this. La Comida was excellent, from the décor to the excellent management and staff and of coarse the food and drinks. I absolutely enjoyed everything that we had. This was my first Unilocal event of any kind and I’m glad I was on the list. I was able to meet a few new foodies and I hope I get to meet more at another event. La Comida is a definable spot I will be returning to. Thanks Again!!!
