Being Asian and growing up in the states, alot of people stereotype«asian» boys to already know some type of martial arts before they are even out of their mom’s womb! Kinda frustrating really… Trust me, I was so glad that my mother agreed to send me to some martial arts training when I was 8. At least, afterwards, I can say«yes» ~ I know martial arts… To this day, I can truly say that I do appreciate the arts, discipline, and lessons learned. As for this show ~ Kung Fu Revelations — Scroll 9, the performance was held at the Rio for a few days. As an X-mas present, my uncle got us tickets to attend this event. Needless to say, I was very excited. The show started at 8pm and was held in the Penn and Teller auditorium. We were seated in the Mezzanine section. Seats were comfy and had tons of legroom. By the way, I think I was sitting on some speakers or subwoofers. Everytime, they had a boom, I felt it under my seat… No, it was not gas! Lol. hee hee… Here is the good and the bad: Good: 1. Artistry and Creativity 2. Precision and Difficulty 3. Of note, there was only one act that I truly liked. It was called«shape». The kung fu artists dressed as Shaolin Monks and were having a meal. Utilizing the bowls, hands, kicks, and the tables, they applied music, artistry, and kung ful to the act. It was upbeat and amazing! Bad: 1. I was expecting for some type of story. Well, there is technically no story at all. It was like the broadway show«CATS» — tons of cats singing… at least at the end, they chose the best cat singer. Here, it was just 9 different«acts» based on a «scroll» message… some of the scroll message was«Diligence», «Paradise», «Shape», «Devotion», etc… Honestly, any of those messages could have been applied to any of the acts. I could not make heads or tails as to why the name stuck. Hey, I guess it is the Non-Artist in me. 2. Boring — after 15 minutes, I got bored and wanted to leave. However, my uncle was there and decided to politely stay 3. During each gaps between shows, there is this«speaker» who talks about the next scroll. Based on previous reviews, supposedly, this is an upgrade, he replaced an annoying lady who spoke about the next scroll. Well, they should get rid of both of them… boring… Just say the scroll or shoot an image up on the curtains… done deal… 4. During each gap, there would be this chick who walks across the stage with a sign of the«next» scroll. You felt like you were in a boxing matching between rounds… you know, one of those ladies walking with the next round number. It just did not mesh… 5. Get rid of the trees! Trust me, if you have seen the show, you would agree… Overall, it was great artistry, however, it was rather boring. I guess some people can appreciate it better than others. As an analogy, some people like«ballet». Honestly, I thought I was one of those people. until, I attended a Snow White ballet… Needless to say, after 5 minutes, I was zonked out and snored like a Tsunami. :)
