i had the pleasure of joining jade and tien for david’s uye here during Unilocal helps month. i’d heard of three square previously but wasn’t aware of all of the amazing things they do for our community on a daily basis. their main focus is hunger relief through food distribution, childhood nutrition, supplemental nutrition assistance, senior share and their programs benefit over 650 partners in southern nevada including food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, after-school programs, senior citizens and more. i found this information on their website and you can too if you’re interested in volunteering or making an in-kind donation. for david’s uye, we were tasked with assembling bags of donated produce to be distributed to seniors through the senior share program. we had to weed out the«not so great» produce which would eventually be sent to gilcrease orchard for them to compost and use as fertilizer for their organic farming. nothing here is wasted! it was physically demanding at times but when you’re surrounded by great people and know that it’s all for an awesome cause, the time just flies by. the conversations were interesting and spanned across many topics but because we’re Unilocalers, it always came back to food somehow. at the end of the day, i was a mess, my fingernails were disgustingly dirty and my belly was grumbling but my heart was full. it was an extremely rewarding experience and i look forward to volunteering again. if you’re interested in volunteering as well, please check out these volunteer days that david has so kindly set up for us.

David set up a UYE as part of Unilocal Helps month so the 4 of us were set up to work the volunteer room. We were there to make bags of mixed produce going to the elderly. We had a line up of celery, carrots, onion, cucumber, red potatoes, yams, nectarines, apples, oranges so it was nice to see that these seniors were getting a good mix and balance of stuff. A lot of the elderly don’t actually have a good quality of life… I’ve seen this firsthand staying often at my grandpa’s apartment in a senior community. His one neighbor was definitely not lined up with much income and lived in difficult poverty. The one annoying caveat to our volunteering was there was already done bags but we had to do all over because the last group didn’t make sure all the bags had the same amounts or notice the onions were moldy. Some students and their teacher came to join our group and at first it was chaotic to figure out where everyone belonged but once we got into the groove we rocked out task! It was rewarding to see pallets of our work at the end of it all. I was tired after, but a very satisfied tired. We have plans to return in September and in October.

As an event for Unilocal Helps Month, a few Unilocalers and I heading out to Three Square to volunteer for the day. It is important to sign up early to insure availability. Originally we wanted to do the kid’s café and pack cold supper boxes for children, but it was booked up until September. Wanting to coincide with the months objective we ended up getting to aid in the volunteer room. The objective was to sort through fresh produce to make bags for the elderly. Working as an assembly line, we went through previous bags to ensure the quality of the items and then made new ones. Us Unilocalers were not alone. We had the privilege of working with some young students and their teacher. Working here reminded me of all the fun times I had in K.E.Y. Club and Kiwanis. The work was physically demanding, but rewarding. Due to the positive experience we had today, we have set up two more UYEs.
