Hey Red!

I moved to MD about 6 months ago from Atlanta. My stylist in Atlanta, Peter, who was not only my stylist but a dear friend of over 10 years, always did a fantastic job with my hair for both color & cut, and is one of the top renowned stylists in the ATL. Needless to say, my next stylist had some pretty big shoes to fill!
I am very pleased that I believe I have found my stylist & salon here in Laurel — Kat and Hey Red. I have been to see Kat twice. For my first appointment, Kat sat with me and we reviewed the colors and products that Peter had used on my hair, not only was Kat familiar with them, but she was able to recommend the color line to use on my hair that was offered at Hey Red that would have similar results. I walked out that day with a great color & cut (over 6″ off!), and my next appointment scheduled. My next appointment was just as wonderful — I was relaxed and enjoyed the entire experience, and yet once again left with a great color & cut that I have received so many compliments for. I was ready for the holiday season & the parties!
My next appointment is in a few weeks after the holidays, and I am looking forward to Kat working her magic on my hair yet once again. So pleased I found this gem of a stylist & salon!

The girls are LOVELY!!! Everyone’s super nice and welcoming. And the haircut I got was awesome!!! And the cherry on top was the price! Extremely reasonable, not overpriced at all :)) I love this place, I’m ONLY getting my hair cut here

I have been going here for years! I have always had a wonderful experience. Michele is the only person I have trusted with my hair for at least 3 – 4 years, and as a result it is healthier and better looking than ever. I have had all varieties of highlights, all-​over colors, eyebrow waxes, haircuts, formal styles-​just about everything done here. The price is steeper than your average hair salon, but the quality and professionalism more than makes up for the difference. There was only one occasion my hair didn’t turn out well (the fault of a stylist no longer employed there) and I was able to return a day later to have it remedied free of charge. I highly recommend Hey Red to all of my friends!

Kat is freaking amazing!!! She is a genius with color. I came in wanting to go bold and she knew exactly how to do it without damaging my hair and making me look amazing. She knows what will work and I trust her completely with my hair! Would 100% recommend Kat to anyone for any hair service!

I have been getting my hair done over the last 10 years by the same person. Due to a misunderstanding I had to go to someone new so I was super scared/​nervous/​hesitant finding someone new!
So I related on my favorite and most trustworthy consumer review app ( Unilocal!) and found HeyRed!
I am ssssssooooo happy that I came here. Everyone here is so professional and polite and sweet and kind and welcoming. As soon as you walk in your greeted by Donna or MJ who are both very nice and seeing their hair immediately let me know I made the right decision!
They offer you something to drink as you wait for your appointment. They go the extra mile to get a good understanding of how you’ve been treating your hair.
First I came for a consultation at no charge. I was introduced to my stylist, Kat. She has the most BEAUTIFUL vibrant red hair. (Even more reassurance I made the right decision). We went over where I’m trying to go ultimately and she came up with a great plan.
2 days later I came for my appointment. Everything about our experience was 5 *****! Kat is very nice and pleasant. I got the best shampoo massage I ever imagined lol super relaxing. She proceeded to cut, color and style my hair.
I can go on and on about how great my experience was. But there’s probably not enough space in the review. All I can say, is if you need help with your hair, come to HeyRed!

I’ve been going here for over three years now; they’re the only place I trust to turn my hair a lustrous purple. I usually ask for Michele, since she has the most experience dying my hair, but I’ve also had a positive experience with Doreen and Deb. Everyone is very professional, and they offer you coffee or tea while you wait.
They’re not cheap: they charge for bleach/​dye by the amount used, which is a lot in my case (~$ 300 to bleach and dye my entire head of hair). However, I’ve found I’ve gotten my money’s worth: my hair was still very purple, 6 ½ months since my last visit, by the time my growing roots finally necessitated going back for my most recent re-​dye. A solid choice of salon, and I intend to keep going for the foreseeable future.

I’ve gotten my hair cut by Kat Warren, what can I say. I was so satisfied with my haircut. She did a great job and I had no doubt on her. She’s great and I will come back for more. She was so clean and serious about her work. Great work Kat and thank you again! I will come back for you again!

So you pay according to how experienced the hair stylist is which I think is pretty fair. I called the day-​of and asked for a more experienced person but they only had a level 1 (least experienced) and I wanted a haircut that day so I agreed. Wish I waited or went somewhere else. I didn’t get a horrible horrible haircut but it wasn’t worth the money. I asked if she had any suggestions for a new style and she didn’t. So I told her trim, side bangs, layers. It took a long time just to do that and I was running late for an interview. And the cut wasn’t form fitting or look good. Over-​priced for the level 1 hair stylist. Perhaps the more experienced are better and worth the more moolah.

I’m very picky when it comes to my hair and I recently got a hair cut by Kat and she did a great job. I do feel like she was not that friendly but who cares she did a great job. Deb also gives amazing cuts and is very friendly.

I had a good experience here, my highlight color looked good and the cut was great. My problem was when I referred my boss to this place, I told her they were very decently priced I only paid around $ 100 for highlights a tint and cut, blow dry. She went to her appointment and was charged $ 250 for highlights and a cut but no blow dry. The price on the website states $ 89 for full highlights for the level she had booked, but she was still charged over double the price for the service she had. When she questioned this she was told she had to pay extra as the stylist had to refill her bleach pot a couple more times, which that is down to the stylist not measuring correctly not my boss and then apologized and said I should have told you from the start it would be more than normal. She told me that even the receptionist seemed puzzled at the price and confirmed it with the stylist. I have been highlighting my hair for years and I thought I had found an awesome place to go to but after this, no, never have I hear that you will be charged more because the stylist didn’t know how much to fill with bleach. Ridiculous. I have seen pricing go off the length of your hair but still to pay double the price? No not all right. I was also told I would get a coupon for $ 20 off my next visit for the referral which 3 – 4 weeks later I still haven’t got so I am taking my business and my referrals elsewhere.

Everyone seems to love this salon but I didn’t have a great experience. I recently moved to MD from WPA and I am having the worst time trying to find a salon I like. I decided to try Hey Red since they have great reviews and the last salon I went to dyed my hair a chocolate brown after asking for the same light brown I was used to getting. It was easy to get an apt which i was excited about since i was in desperate need of a hair cut and color.
When I first arrived I heard some whispers that others stylists were having to help the «new» girl since she was so far behind. It was soon realized I had the «new» girl Kat. My experience went downhill from there. I went in for a cut and color and was at the salon for over 3 hours. My salon in WPA I would’ve been in and out in a little over an hour.
After asking where I parted my hair (i part on my left side) she parted it in the middle and started to cut. She never asked how I wanted my bangs and she cut them at a slant. I always get my bangs cut straight across. I wanted to go lighter since I never wanted to go dark to begin with. She put the color on my hair and my roots came out so much lighter than the rest of my hair she had to redye my roots. Now my roots and the rest of my hair don’t match. She then told me because of the previous dye she couldn’t lighten the rest of my hair. Well, since she does this for a living, shouldn’t she have known that because I’ve previously dyed my hair that there would be other color that could prevent it from lightening. She shouldve explained to me that in order to lighten my hair she would’ve had to have put highlights in not just do an overall color.
All of this and it costs me $ 130 for just a cut and bad color. Everyone else at the shop seemed please with their stylists so if you go make sure you don’t go to the new girl Kat. And I will continue to look for a salon in MD who will actually do a good job.

I move a lot and I often find it hard to find a stylist/​salon that can understand me when I talk about what I want my hair to look like. It’s a combination of edgy yet refined enough to be pushing the edge of business appropriate. Then I found Kat and Hey Red! here in Maryland.
Kat understood my quirky hair desires and I’ve NEVER been happier with my hair than when she worked her magic with dye and scissors on it. To think I was ever nervous about finding a stylist!
The Hey Red! salon is the most warm and welcoming professional salon I’ve ever been to. Instantly it feels like you’re among talented friends. They’re quick to offer you something to drink, making it feel much like home. I tend to go for a chai tea. They also have some of the best products I’ve ever had used on my hair. I recently went from blue-​black hair to brown and ash blonde (all by Kat) and I swear that the Eufora line of deep conditioning shampoo/​conditioner helped a lot in keeping my hair happy.
I could go on for awhile, but bottom line, this is a GREAT salon and I’m happy to have met Kat and will be heartbroken when I have to leave. There’s no way anyone or any place will compare.

Found Hey Red based on the great reviews this salon has on Unilocal and am not disappointed.
I’ve gotten my hair cut by both Meri and Doreen and both have been really great at listening to what I was looking for and suggesting new ideas, but totally not being pushy about it. Everyone is incredibly professional. The products they use are pretty good too, but they don’t push them too hard. I like that they email appointment confirmations and reminders, but they also send out a few too many promotional emails for my taste (and unrelated products, for example, skin care announcements to hair cut clients).
The only other negative thing I have to say is that the last time I came in, I was seated in the aisle rather than in your standard salon station. The place seemed busy, but seemed to be handling it ok, other than my haircut happening in an unconventional space, with a chair in front of a smallish mirror hanging on the wall.
My SO also got his hair cut here, and while the price was a little steep for a men’s haircut, was the same price as a women’s, and took way longer than mine, his stylist (Angela?) did a great job, and I ended up taking home a handsome guy :)

I took my niece here for her first haircut. We were def not the easiest for them to work with. The staff was super friendly, amazing with my young niece and just lovely people. I appreciated their understanding i am biracial with dreadlocs and my niece is white so they were def able to explain many aspects about her hair to me. I would recommend them at anytime.

I came here based on Unilocal reviews – I’m new to the area and even though I do not live near Laurel (25 – 30 min if no traffic), I was willing to try it out since nothing near me sounded very promising.
I’m glad I followed that instinct! I was assigned to Meri, and now I don’t want anyone else to cut my hair while I live here. The whole experience there has been very good.
Let’s start with the front desk – I’ve always been greeted warmly and offered a hot drink. They have lots of different herbal teas, which is my favorite, and they have a drink menu posted which is very convenient (especially my first time there when I otherwise would have felt awkward asking them about their selection, etc). Really a nice touch!
Next, the shampooing. Oh, a little bit of heaven. Seriously, I love how this woman shampoos my hair. I have gone to more expensive salons by far and never had as great a scalp massage as I get here. I always wish I had a little more time in that chair but I never feel gypped. Wonderful.
Then, there’s Meri! She is friendly and has always been responsive to however I was feeling that day (chatty vs. not). I always come in feeling tired and sort of not talkative after work, and by the time she’s starting to dry my hair I’m feeling a lot looser and chatty.
My first time in, my hair was a mess. A bunch of personal stuff had come up in my life and I had put off a haircut for so long, my long hair was COMPLETELY FULL of split ends. When she was done, I felt like a different person and my hair felt new. She works with my hair well – it’s an interesting combo of coarse, baby fine and medium strands – and I will be back and be happy to recommend Hey Red! to other area friends.

FANTASTIC salon! Doreen and everyone there is just great. I’ve had so many issues with getting my hair colored over the past few months and Doreen really saved the day and my hair! I trust her 100% she is the first to be completely honest with me and she made sure to explain everything multiple times from beginning to end. I’m so grateful to finally find someone I can trust who is so professional and sweet. While I was there all her clients said the same. I’ll be coming back for sure and will definitely be a long time customer! Thank you Doreen!

I have never been so nervous about trusting Unilocal as I was with my hair.
Having just moved here from Hampton roads and a great, nationally trained Scruples salon, I was terrified to have to get my hair done in this — pardon me — small town.
But Meri proved quite capable, she listened to my incessant details about the textured cuts I prefer for my bangs and the bottom line of my hair. She helped match my color back to the preferred natural red I look so adorably Ginger in.
She also took her time in both my color and cut, which can be a problem in almost any situation. I felt her apply, comb and detangle each section of my hair as she colored it.
The lady that shampooed my hair reminded me of my Grandma, but with ADD. She was very spunky, though maybe a little rough on the scalp. Meri dried and cut my hair. The time she spent thinning my hair is probably the most important to me since I have pounds of hair, but I never felt like she did anything wrong.
Oh, and my hair is adorable.

This place is seriously awesome. I started going around October and I’ve been back twice since. Everyone who works here is super friendly and good at what they do and the spa itself is clean and cozy. As soon as you walk in for an appointment they offer you a drink from a long list (I bring my mom with me sometimes and they offer one to her as well, even though she’s not there for an appointment). I’ve had a few different treatments here including a hair cut and eyebrow wax and I’ve never been disappointed. The price is slightly higher for some services than they would be at other places but I’m ok with paying a little more for the quality of service.
The last time I scheduled an appointment was particularly awesome. They were running behind schedule earlier in the day and called me a few hours before my appointment to let me know so I wouldn’t have to wait. I was scheduled for a hair cut, eyebrow wax, and hand parrifin treatment (they send you a postcard during your birth month and offer this for free!), all with Meri. I’d heard from the woman at the front desk that Meri had had a rough day with a few difficult clients in a row so I wasn’t expecting her to be as cheerful as she was. She did a great job on all three things and was perfectly polite the entire time. Looking back, I wish I’d spoken to her manager to let him/​her know how awesome she was.

I first visited this place back in Oct 2011 because of all the positive reviews on Unilocal!Meri was the first person to cut my hair here and have been going back to her ever since!
The place is cozy; staff are nice. Prices are reasonable!

I saw this place and all of the good reviews here on Unilocal,so decided to try it out. I made an appointment, in advance, and the day of my appointment they made me sit and wait for an HOUR after my scheduled appointment time. All because she had taken a walk-​in. What the heck was the point of me making an appointment?!
I brought in a picture of the hairstyle I wanted. I really needed some layers put in to add some more life to my boring flat hair. I felt all she did was a couple snips. She asked me what I thought and I said
«Wait, you can’t possibly be finished.»
She said «What’s wrong?»
Which I replied «where are the layers I asked for?»
She went back at my hair, making tiny snips while talking to another hair dresser. She finished… still no layers. She than persisted that everyone would love my haircut. I said «What haircut? You took off less than a half an inch and this resembles nothing like what I asked or showed you.» By this point she was rushing me out the door for another client.
I’m hoping maybe another appointment will change my view of this place but so far I would not call this my go to hair salon.
