Specialties
Oseh Shalom is a vibrant, inclusive Reconstructionist synagogue in Laurel, Maryland. We celebrate Jewish life through prayer, learning, social action and supportive community.
As a regional congregation, our members come from many area towns, including Columbia, Catonsville, Clarksville, Ellicott City, Gaithersburg, Burtonsville, Olney, Silver Spring, White Oak, College Park, Bowie, Annapolis and beyond.
Our members include both traditional Jewish families and nontraditional households, including same-sex couples and interfaith families. We believe that the quality of the relationship defines the family, not its composition. Our diverse membership includes Jews with Conservative, Reform and Orthodox backgrounds, Jews by choice, and individuals of many other religious backgrounds.
We welcome participation from members at all stages of life, including young singles, newlywed couples, families with young children, empty-nesters and seniors. Oseh Shalom also welcomes members with disabilities and work with them to enable their full participation in worship. Both family services and High Holiday services are ASL interpreted.
School age children attend our award winning Religious School program on Wednesdays and Sundays. We offer a home school program for families who can’t make the mid-week session but strongly encourage attendance if possible. We make every effort to accommodate children with special needs.
History
Established in 1966.
Oseh Shalom was founded as the Jewish Congregation of Laurel on May 24, 1966, by 16 local families. In August 1973, after much growth, members chose the Hebrew name Oseh Shalom, «Source of Peace.»
The Congregation affiliated with the Reconstructionist Movement in 1979. We moved into our current building in 1991. In 2006, Rabbi Doug Heifetz became the rabbi, following 26 years of service by Rabbi Gary Fink.
Cantor Charlie Bernhardt has been with Oseh Shalom since 1983, and publishes CDs of his music.
