L & J Auto Body and Paint

I have been using L&J AutoBody for close to 10 years now…
And wouldn’t take my car anywhere else!
I do a lot of driving, commuting, travel, etc., and unfortunately have had some minor mishaps over the years. L&J was originally referred to me by a friend, when my leased SL Mercedes was hit by a Hit & Run driver. I had insurance, but was carrying a $ 1000 deductible and did want to involve my insurance company. I have to admit I was a little nervous at first, because it was an expensive LEASED vehicle and the color was a specialty item (Black Opal), which would be hard to blend/​match if done by someone less than an expert or professional. Needless to say the owner Juan & his beautiful Assistant Angelica were able to assure me that everything would come out perfect and within 2 days. I was immediately relieved and excited that I would only be without my vehicle for a short while. I was given the option of a FREE loaner or discounted rental from Enterprise, which is conveniently located right down the street. I opted for the rental because of my high mile commute. I would’ve felt guilty racking up the miles on their loaner even though they informed me that it would fine. They even gave me a ride to Enterprise! 2 days later, my car was finished and perfect as promised. And for about ¹⁄₃ of the cost it would’ve been, had I taken it to the Dealership. At that point, I was sold…
Since then, they have done repairs on my BMW, Cadillac Escalades, & GMC Yukon.
Also, I have referred at least 15 family, friends, & acquaintances who have all had equally satisfying experiences.

We have had two vehicles that needed repair after accidents in the past year. One was an older Mercedes (hit and almost totalled while parked at a valet) and a brand new 2012 Honda Accord Crosstour (6 weeks old when accident occurred).
Both times L & J auto body made the process seamless and the work was done perfectly and efficiently.
The office staff is courteous and knowledgeable of insurance processes. They picked up my cars, towed them to their shop, dealt with the insurance companies and kept me informed of everything.
Both vehicles looked as if they were never in an accident. You would never be able to tell that my 2012 Honda was in an accident with over 12K worth of damage before I even got the plates in the mail. Thank you L & J, I won’t go anywhere else.

What a relief it is to have a «go to» auto body shop that I can actually trust. I have been going to L & J Auto Body Shop for almost 10 years. Luckily, I have only needed their services twice! The work they do is top quality. I had them paint my Audi A4 and they over exceeded my expectations at a reasonable price. The best part is the individuals who run the business. The owner Juan is a wonderful trusting man along with the office manager Angelica who keeps you informed of your car every step of the way. There are no gimmicks with them! They are just lovely to work with. I have been referring business to them for many years and all of my family and friends continue to use them as well. They will not let you down!

Is it worse for a business to be completely dishonest or absolutely incompetent? With L&J Auto Body and Paint in Lawndale, you won’t have to choose because they’ll provide BOTH in abundance.
I will state upfront that I’ve thought a lot about this review. What I’m describing to you happened 6 months ago, and I was so angry over the situation that I decided to cool down and keep this review to myself for a while. What you’re reading here is my review after I’ve had HALF A YEAR to forget what a low-​class establishment they are.
I have a motorcycle, and I love that bike. In the spring I decided to give it a little of my own personality with a new paint scheme. I did my research and figured out what I wanted and I began doing the work. I took the plastic fairings off my bike and stripped off the factory decals. I cleaned the parts well and sanded them down with 220 and then 440 grit sandpaper. I cleaned them again and looked for a local body shop to put on paint for me.
I found good reviews for L&J on another review site, so L&J made the short list of places that I went to visit. I met the owner, I showed him my motorcycle body parts, and I told him what I wanted done. I asked very specifically if he could put down a black satin finish. Every question I had was answered with an immediate, «of course,» or, «no problem.» I asked if he could do a satin finish clear coat and he went out to talk to his guys and said they could do it for me without problems. I then asked him how much, and he was right at the top (but within) my planned budget. He then said he could to it by the next day, and that sold it for me. I was told to bring cash payment the next day, and I left my parts.
I went back the next day to find a gloss finish on my bike parts. I wasn’t happy. It wasn’t what I asked for or what we discussed, but I could live with a glossy black bike. When I looked closer, I noticed something that looked like dust on the parts. I then realized that it wasn’t dust ON them; it was dust UNDER THE PAINT! WTF!!! Everything in their shop is dusty; it’s not surprising that my parts got dusty waiting to be painted. Why didn’t they wipe down the parts before they painted them? Didn’t they do this work in a spray booth?
It gets worse.
I then notice that some of the parts have these flat spots with paper stuck to them. It looks like they painted the parts and then set them on something to dry. The paper underneath the wet paint stuck to the parts as they were drying… and the paint was running on some of the parts… and there was a THUMB PRINT in the middle of one of my parts!
These guys are complete amateurs! THEY DON’T KNOW HOW TO PAINT! Of course you need to wipe down the parts before you paint them. Of course you should paint them in the spray booth. They have no pride at all in their work. How could they even think to deliver something like this??? I was pretty unhappy, so they call the owner and he comes to look at my parts. I show him the dust and the dried paper and the thumbprint and the scratches (I didn’t mention the scratches, but they were everywhere). He claims that he can’t see any of it; nothing at all! We’re both standing there looking at my parts, in the same sunlight, and he’s claiming that he doesn’t see anything!!?
I couldn’t believe it. It’s like I’m in a bad dream. I point to a huge scratch in the paint that even this guy couldn’t possibly deny. You know what he does? He licks his finger and wipes the scratch! Keep in mind that this paint is less than 6 hours old; it needs like a week to fully cure. Aside from being just GROSS, that saliva stain was then permanent in their crappy paint job.
To top it off, one of my parts is missing. They go to ask where it is and they tell me that they’re not done with it. I have to come back later, and it turns out that that one had white dots all over it from another paint job’s overspray. They tried to buff it out, but they completely fail at making it any better.
I took my parts and left L&J. These people are horrible and incompetent and they will take your money and provide nothing in return.
I brought my bike parts home and let them sit in my living room for a week. I looked at them every day to see if it would hurt me less to see what these people had done. I never felt any better, so I started all over again.
I washed all the parts and sanded all the crappy paint and dust and fingerprints and saliva off. After that, I did even more research. I bought the paints and an inexpensive HPLV spray gun, a respirator, and materials to build a spray booth. I painted my bike parts in my garage. The pictures of what I did are in my profile.
L&J Auto Body and Paint is a horrible, terrible «business» that took my money and provided low quality, dishonest, and shoddy work. They then stood there and tried to convince me otherwise.
Stay away from this place.
