Entrée was okay. Chips and salsa with fresh guacamole was great. Shrimp plate had too many onions for me.

Well I was looking for a mariscos/seafood joint near work to grab a shrimp cocktail but a not too expensive one. I found the Unilocal reviews for this place and gave them a call for the price on a shrimp cocktail and tacos. The cocktail was a lil over $ 8 for the large size and the tacos were $ 1.25 each. The carne asada tacos were very good. The meat was cooked just right, flavorful, juicy and chopped up in nice little chunks. The needed sauces, lime, cilantro and onions were all there. Now the cocktail. It was a good size for the price. The cocktail sauce was spot on in thickness and taste and had chopped avocado. I tend to personally like my sauce just a slight tad thicker but this one was good. The only thing is that I wished they had put in a lil more diced tomatoes and onions. The amount of shrimp was about right and they were cooked well. As custom it came with the usual fixins as lime, red hot sauce and saltine crackers. Just be careful with the hot sauce as I think they already put some in the cocktail sauce mixture. So the cocktail already had some hot kick to it, lol. The place is small with about three or four tables inside and two round tables outside in the front. Im coming back for more tacos and to try the ceviche tostadas. Oh yeah!

South Bay Taco Crawl first stop. Cozy little taco joint with friendly service and ok chips and salsa. They were out of both Lengua and Birria so I had their chorizo and adobada tacos. The tacos came plated plain with a self serve bar for all the trimings across the room. Alex C. thought the chorizo tacos were good, I’m not a chorizo taco fan and LaCueva’s didn’t change my mind. The adobada, on the other hand was excellent-tender well seasoned and moist. If you come here it is a definit must have. On the weekend nights LaCueva also cooks up their tacos outside till midnight — do I hear midnight taco run? Next time? Birria

On Fridays and Saturdays this restaurant grills out after 7pm. You’ll see a whiteboard with the taco menu for the evening. We tried the carnitas, el pastor, tripas and lengua. They’re Ensenada style and served on styrofoam plates. Then there is a bar to the left with fresh onion and cilantro along with various kinds of salsa. Come here on a warm night and sit out on their patio. This is a totally cool hole in the wall and is now a regular stop for us. Wash it down with some Horchata-and it’s in a glass barrel, not a dispensing machine. That’s how it should be!

I was on my way to El Amigo for lunch one sunday afternoon recently and to my surprise I found out it was closed. So I ventured over to La Cueva about a hundred yards away. From the outside, this little hole in the wall restaurant, looks like a bar. But inside it’s a nice little restaurant. I’ve been there twice now. Each time I’ve been served by a waitress who speaks almost no English, but is very nice. In the back there’s a little patio area with a shrine and such. I like these little hole in the wall places if anything, for the fact that it makes you feel like you’ve jumped into another world for a bit. The food? I had some tacos de pollo on one occasion, and a burrito on the other occasion. Nothing really great, but for $ 4 what do you expect. When I come here it’s because I want to be in a little hole in the wall restaurant, not because I’m expecting great food.

i learned a new thing about mexicans today. they sho do freakin *luv* their shrimp cocktail! ha hahahha… i came here w/like 10 of them and almost all of them ordered a huge goblet of shrimp cocktail. now, me being unmexican, found that the dish looked unappetizing, not good enough to try. the word i got from the mexicans was that it was arite… sumn about the soup part bein bland???*****note to self: get used to eating shrimp cocktail to maintain honorary latina status****i got a plate of rice and beans and shrimp sauteed in peppers & onions(ranchero). everything was just arite. nuthin amazing. they had some pretty tasty chips & salsa! i dunno wut that says about a restaurant if their chips & salsa are more memorable than their food tho…

This place is a gem. If you’re doing takeout, order ahead because they make everything fresh and it can sometimes take 20 minutes. But it is worth it. The fish tacos are large and only $ 2(as of 4⁄08).

Just next door to Aloisio Silva Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu(see below review) on Manhattan Blvd., if you’re driving by you might miss this cool little spot, especially if you happen to blink. Its pretty much a hole in the wall, that looks pretty ordinary from the outside. Upon entering you feel as if you have been transported some tropical little island in the pacific… not really… but its painted up to make you feel that way. It adds to the charm of the place, especially since they serve only seafood. To our dismay they do not serve alcohol, but you are allowed to bring your own if you so desire. *Mental note for the next time… I ordered 2 Fish Tacos @ $ 2 a piece and the Shrimp Ceviche for $ 2.50. It was plenty filling! The seafood was fresh and delicious, which had me craving a nice cold beer the whole meal!!! The rest of the menu consists of different types of Seafood cocktails, soups, salads, Fajitas, and appetizers. All reasonably priced.
