Eagle Peak Shooting Range

So it’s been a while since I’ve visited Eagle Peak. I trekked out there today to go through a couple hundred rounds of 9m & 45c with my Ruger SR 1911 Lightweight, Taurus PT111g2 &
M&P Shield. What a great afternoon! I was greeted immediately upon entering the very well air-​conditioned office. Asked how I was doing, how had my week gone, etc… Paid my range fee $ 15.00…for the day… & was reminded to put on my ear protection before exiting. I was greeted again by the range manager, Bob. He mentioned a few of the rules and let me know if I had any questions to flag him. Bob ran a very professional line, but was not hovering over shooters or overbearing in any way. I did have one dbl feed and due to a strained thumb, couldn’t clear the pistol. Bob, came over and assisted in clearing it… with a smile.
Couldn’t have had a better experience this afternoon. Thanks guys.

I’ve been going to Eagle Peak for years. In the past, I would tend to agree with some of the negative comments about the Range Officers. However, there has been a change in Range Management !! No more shouting or belittling shooters, yes safety is primary absolutely no question, but management has put a stop to the yelling and screaming. I usually go Thursday or Friday and the staff inside and the Range Officer are FIRST rate. They’ll assist any shooter with helpful tips and available to answer any questions. Give Eagle Peak another look, you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

I am an experienced firearms instructor, both in law enforcement and in the military. I read the negative reviews and was cautious regarding the alleged rude range safety officers and staff. I didn’t experience that. The staff was courteous and the facilities were good for my needs. You can’t beat the price. Lots of range options and the ammo prices were what one would expect for a range. Open every day. Follow the rules, ask for direction if you are not sure, and if you think someone is being rude, be an adult and call them on it.

I really want to give these guys 5 stars because superficially they look good but after many visits, I just can’t. Safety is absolutely first priority here but they are real asswholz about it. The guy at the counter is taking care of business fine but the ability to communicate to human beings in lacking for sure. The RO is hot or cold. Mostly cold. He seems to enjoy embarrassing folks by loudly calling them out for their range rule infractions for ALL customers to hear on BOTH the pistol and rifle ranges. When he turns dick on people, everyone stops and watches like a train wreck. He has no problems yelling at 8, 10, 12 year old kids for their parent’s lack of following the rules. If you want to make sure kids don’t enjoy shooting guns, these old shitz are your answer. Maybe the POTUS should hire him to drive people from the sport!
On what will likely be my final visit I, for example, got a new AR for Christmas. I did not have a case yet so I carried it out to the range. They were in a cease-​fire so nobody was allowed to handle the weapons — agreed and understood. But I HAD NO CASE and had JUST left their offices. I had a bright yellow chamber safety plug in and trigger lock on but he immediately began yelling at me and wouldn’t STFU to see I had to carry the gun with my hands because IT HAD NO CASE.
I feel safe here but do NOT feel comfortable which does lead to accidents. Because of the tyrannical behavior, I feel I need to focus on their range rules more than safely handling my guns and improving my competency and skills. «Safe» like traveling down the Interstate with police cars on all four of your corners BUT then you begin to focus more on NOT breaking traffic laws rather than driving and paying attention to the road.
The final straw was that they DO NOT allow FMJ ammo on the rifle range. Seriously? Restrict damn near every target round WallyWorld and Academy sells??? I’m out.

My wife and I really enjoy shooting here. The staff are wonderful especially the lady inside. She is always a pleasure to talk to. The range officials are fair and if you get «talked to» then YOU did something wrong. We especially love the shotgun area. Most of the time, we have the trap throwers to ourselves. The only reason for deducting a star is they don’t allow full metal jacket ammo. That can make shooting rifle here expensive. Overall though, great place to spend a day. You only pay $ 15 for all day no matter what you shoot.

My first experience at Eagle Peak Shooting Range today! I was a little concerned based on looking at some of the previous reviews, but it was needless. The staff was very pleasant and extremely helpful!!! I was very impressed with their adherence to safety, but they were in no way rude or overbearing. In fact, they were genuinely friendly and very responsive to questions. All in all a great and safe shooting experience that I will definitely look forward to repeating very soon!!!

I am impressed at the friendliness of the staff and the strict adherence to safety. Prices for range usage and for ammunition were quite reasonable by east coast standards.

Prices have gone up 50% recently to $ 15. The staff is made up of pissed off old retired cops who have no idea how to treat people, no less paying customers. I bet I can pay anyone else $ 2 to treat me like dogshit and save some money. Go somewhere else. At least that’s what you’ll do after your first visit to this place.

I’ve been coming here for over 8 years. At times twice a week or once a month. They don’t allow you to bring cleaning rods only bore snakes. Not a good place for new firearms that need to be cleaned while shooting. Renting the scopes for 300 yards is not a good idea. Buy some ear plugs at hardware store to use under your ear mugs if you go when it’s busy. Going to fire a couple rounds at the last hour is not a good idea. Plan ahead… bring your own STAPLE gun and PRINT your own targets. Breaking the rules is not a good idea even if it wasn’t an idea to begin with. Some of this will save you time and money. %%%I think they should have two range officers on the range during cease fires as reminders of the yellow line and to speed up the process.%%% An optional unlimited monthly pass would be a nice addition for the members.

First of all, I would like to say that I have never had an issue with anyone out here but I’m rating 1 star for the experience.
Listening to the range officers berate and scream at people the entire time you are out there really makes this a negative experience.
They do keep the place safe for shooting but I believe you can correct mistakes without screaming at people and generally treating them like garbage. I probably won’t ever go back now that we have another option in Leander.

WORST GUN RANGE around Austin, TX, without a doubt! Long list of reasons to avoid this place, but first and foremost, the people running this range are old and grumpy (as other reviewers have noted). They also seem to be very confused (along with some other Unilocal reviewers) about what kind of rules and atmosphere help to keep a gun range safe. Arbitrary, pointless rules don’t increase safety, they frustrate customers and drive away business. I was scouting this range for inclusion into a corporate outings guide… not a chance in hell after what I encountered!
Issues encountered:
1. As stated on their rules sheet; «NO (FMJ) full metal jacket RIFLE ammunition to be fired on any ranges.» They claim the FMJ ricochets. I’m not sure what there is for an FMJ round to ricochet off of when punching through paper targets and burying in a dirt mound, but ok, their range, their rules.
2. Range officer was extremely grumpy and rude. Negative from the second I stepped on the range. Long story short, he got mad because I asked for a cease-​fire to hang targets.
3. After waiting ~ 20 minutes for a cease-​fire, so I could hang some targets, I then had the joy of a muddy trip to the 50 yard rifle targets. Guess grass, gravel or something else to walk on is too much to ask for. I don’t mind getting dirty, but I’d rather not have to clean my boots and my car, along with my guns, just because I went to the gun range!
4. Next came the drama associated with me hanging targets on the space for slot #1 along with my shooting slot, #2. There were only 2 other shooters on the fairly empty rifle range. The other shooters were at the other end of the rifle range. The very (NOT) helpful range officer asked what slot I was shooting from, noticing the extra targets I placed on slot #1. He explained (rudely) that I could only shoot at the target for the slot I was on. He said I should move myself and my equipment between slots #1 & #2 as I shot on the associated targets. No «cross slot» shooting he called it, or something similar. He also demanded (yes, he was demanding, there was no politeness or request in his voice or the words he used) that I needed to immediately go inside to tell the cash register guy to hang my card on both slots. Very picky, is this really necessary when the range is empty? But whatever, I smiled, cleared my rifle and walked inside to advise the cash register guy, as requested.
5. Next was the continued «hovering» the range officer did in standing over me. He tried to make some small talk. I tried to show him the guns I had brought, but quickly figured out that he was only really interested in inspecting the ammo in my bag. He literally bent over to look at what all I had in my range bag. If you want to inspect my range bag or whatever, fine, just ask… don’t be sneaky or try to distract me with small talk.
6. Apparently the old, grumpy & rude range officer I dealt with didn’t have a good understanding of the no FMJ rule as written. He forbade me to shoot my .45 ACP rifle on the rifle range, because my .45 rounds were FMJ. The rule, as written and as explained to me by the even older person at the cash register, was that the no FMJ rule ONLY related to high velocity rifle rounds. This is exactly as it’s explicitly written on the rules list they hand you (see #1 above). I even showed my FMJ .45 ACP ammo to the person at the cash register upon checking in and was told it was completely fine to use. So… I politely told the range officer that my ammo had been cleared and also pointed out that the no FMJ rule was only applicable to rifle rounds. He wasn’t understanding that handgun ammunition in a rifle is still handgun ammunition. I was so frustrated at this point, that I politely told him I’d take my business elsewhere, and proceeded to pack up and leave. He stood over me the entire time I packed up, muttering some excuses and seemingly trying to make amends for running me off. Not offering any apologies mind you… only trying to explain his misunderstanding of the no RIFLE FMJ rule.
7. Upon arriving back inside the check-​in area, I advised the person at the cash register that I wanted a complete refund and would be leaving. I advised that there were too many arbitrary rules and that the range officer was not helpful and was extremely rude. I don’t think I’m the first person to ever leave this range out of frustration for the way they run their range. He didn’t even ask me any questions. Just gave me my $ 15 dollars for the lifetime membership card back. I asked about the other $ 15 for use of the range and he asked «did you shoot». I said «yes, 2 rounds total». He then said «so no refund». I told him fine, I’ll note that in my review of your range. Didn’t phase him. Pretty sure he had zero concern for my experience as a customer.
So in summary, AVOID THIS RANGE!!! Rude people running the range and confusing, arbitrary rules about FMJ, where & what you can shoot and on and on. Terrible experience, terrible range!

This is not the place to go if you expect to be treated like a person, like places that are ran correctly, or expect there to be adequate staffing.
When you walk out onto the range, there are no signs to tell you which range is which, we saw no safety officer for an hour, and when we did, he was a complete jerk.
I would go anywhere but here. The staff is completely unprofessional. Ran by a bunch of old codgers who think you run a place by yelling and cursing at people.

High prices and grumpy staff. And they only accept cash, no cards… Other than that is ok. Might try a different place next time.

This place is not that great. It is too far out for me, and the problem has been it has been too crowded when I go out there to make the experience worth the trip. Also, I brought a friend the last time I went, and the range officer was a first class a-​hole. He could have made his point easily without mocking my friend to his face in front of all of the other patrons. I have no time or tolerance for that type of poor customer service.
Like Woodrow McCall said… «Rude behavior in a man, I won’t tolerate it.»
Just go to Red’s and forget this place. I tore up my card and won’t be going back. Find any other gun range in town, and I am SURE it will be a better experience.

Management is rude and controlling.
This range would be nice and a lot of fun if the owners/​management weren’t so condemning of customers. I’ve only been here twice but it’s been nothing but problems. Today I watched them pull a guys membership because he was confuse about the rules– they said he had an attitude problem. I know for a fact that different ranges have different rules, but they accused the customer of trying to break a state law. I don’t think I will go back.
I did some research and found that the owner also owns the Garland range where there have been several problems, a death, an law suits. I guess these guys are just so reactionary, but they still don’t need to be rude to everyone.

I normally prefer Red’s, because I like indoor ranges in general. I’m weird like that. But I also love shooting clays. I think the shotgun area here is great, and one of the best options around.
A couple weeks ago I was going here to take my out of town friend shooting (because, when in Texas…) I don’t own a shotgun, so when I made the trek out here from South Austin and my friend who was going to bring his shotguns backed out last minute, we decided to just rent a gun and buy some ammo, knowing full well that it was a grit your teeth kind of deal.
The pistol rentals aren’t terrible at $ 15. They do say you need to purchase ammo from them if you rent from them… at range prices. (hint: At least, the first box of ammo has to be bought from them). A box of .45s cost nearly $ 40. Ouch. Top that off with the $ 15 per person range fee (and the one time signup for my friend) and we came away at a pretty expensive little field trip…
Anyway, the shotgun area is fantastic. The pistols are ok. A bit close together so tall people like myself often have casings going into the stall next to me. The hold times seem to be a little more often than I’d like, but I’m not sure if that’s a fixed interval or just gauged by the range officer. Unlike other commenters, I’m pretty happy that they’re strict on security. The ones who were watching that day were also good enough to answer all the questions my noobie shooter friend had that I couldn’t answer.
Going forward, this is still going to be my clay shooting destination, but for any pistols, it’s too far and too expensive.

–Admission is now $ 15/​day, which makes it less of a value, but brings Eagle Peak in line with Best of the West and Lone Star gun ranges
–No FMJ on the rifle ranges. Supposedly due to a pending lawsuit. Boooo
–The range officer in charge of the pistol range has gotten more… overzealous, than I’ve seen in the past. Mind your P’s & Q’s
–They aren’t huge fans of Class III weapons.
The recent changes make this less of a bargain, though it’s still a decent range in its own right.

I have been going out to Eagle Peak for 7 or 8 years. Pretty mixed experiences.
Facilities — The pistol range is decent. Sometimes the target boards are shot up and unusable. They don’t care and won’t change it out until the next day.
Range Officers — Most of the officers are grumpy old men with a focus on safety. They pride themselves in the ‘grumpy’ reputation. There have been two that were just incompetent and unable to control the range well on a Saturday and were looking to pick a fight and throw their weight around because they were so lost at managing the shooters. They were creating an unsafe conditions rather than keeping people safe.
Crossfire on the range — years back when the ranges were on different ceasefire schedules there were instances of crossfire from the pistol to the rifle range. Not exactly sure how that was happening, but actually met a guy who was nicked by something off the pistol range when he was setting his target on the rifle range.
Price — I wish I could say the prices were good, but it has gotten quite a bit pricier. As of July the range entry fee went from $ 10 to $ 15, range card from $ 10 to $ 15 and gun rental from $ 12 to $ 15. Their statement was that their costs have gone up and they needed to raise prices, don’t like it go elsewhere. One could spend a bunch of time debating that, the check for the range card should be less than $ 2, that price is pretty consistent in the market place. Gun rental fee bump was modest, but they didn’t expand the available guns available. Since the number of folks coming through the doors is 3x what it was years back, it is surprising that they needed to increase the fee.
Brass — Along with overpriced ammo, the range officers collect the casings almost as fast as they hit the ground. This is a huge revenue stream for the range. Even if you are keeping your brass you have to watch out because they are trying to get it from you before you gather it.
There have been a number of improvements on the shotgun range. More and improved throwers. It was hit or miss to the old throwers working on a given day.
I would have given the range a 4 stars but with the price increases, it is more affordable to join some of the private ranges if you are going to shoot 4 or 5 times in a year.

There are many things I like/​love about Eagle Peak Shooting Range and there are a FEW things I can’t stand. In general, there’s not much that would ever keep me away.
First the good stuff: It’s an old place, but quite functional. Best of all, at least for me, it is VERY close to where I live. The range masters run a very tight operation which I GREATLY appreciate because I can’t believe what some people do at the range. They run their cease fire operations like hawks which is great. Price is super affordable but bring your own ammo (IF YOU CAN, SEE THE NOT SO GOOD BELOW).
The not so good: someone else put it best. A BUNCH of grumpy old men. I’m probably older than one or two of the Range Masters but I’m NOT grumpy. There’s no reason to be rude. I was a champion marksman/​competition shooter in the military, know my firearms and safety inside and out. A little courtesy, especially for FREQUENT visitors would be nice. I go, but I think the treatment is mostly rude, even when its not busy.
ALSO… the NO FMJ on the rifle range is stupid, stupid, stupid. I was told the policy is to prevent ricochet – huh? Have you seen what a .223÷5.56 round does just from hitting dirt? It obliterates, It’s not going to ricochet. Don’t make me buy your high-​priced JHP ammo just because no one else on the planet carries it, or can get.
Their concept of rapid fire is kind of dumb. I think they recommend 1 – 2 seconds between shots. I mean really, I’m practicing for self defense, if I were EVER in a situation that required it, I need to be more comfortable firing, recovering and firing again much more quickly, with a modicum of accuracy.
They REALLY need to replace and keep the shell ejection screening maintained – not just better – SOME. Almost every station has torn or missing screens and I’ve had more hot rounds down my shirt, in my pockets, etc. Screen is cheap, c’mon guys.

What do I like best about this range… safety, safety, safety.
Yep, the range officers here are really on top of their game. They are alert to every single little stupid thing that a newbie might do, and that is exactly what you want at a gun range! Plus, they are all around nice guys. If you get a chance to talk to them, you’ll find that they are very helpful and very knowledgeable… even about bowling.
On your first visit you will have to sit through a safety film. Pay attention, because the rules in the film are the rules of the range. Break the rules and the range officers can kick your butt out. And, trust me, the rest of us will want them to, because we don’t want to get shot by some careless person.
You will have to bring cash because they don’t do credit here. But the range is inexpensive.
Best of all, this is an outdoor range. I will be honest and say that I just won’t go to indoor ranges. And, even less inclined ever since Mike L said got hit with a ricochet on his last visit to an indoor range.
If you are a girl, like me, you may like their girl’s shooting club. You can come and shoot with other girls after work, and get helpful pointers to improve your aim. Remember this is a sport, and the whole idea is to get more shots in the center circle than everyone else.
They also offer a skeet shooting range. And, while I do not ever want to go shoot a duck… I don’t even want to eat duck… I do want to shoot at inanimate clay targets falling across the sky. Yes, I said falling… every time I say flying my physics freak hubby points out that even something going up is actually falling… makes no sense to me but, what the heck… just go go shoot at falling clay things… I promise you’ll like it.
(Oh, and one last tip… no FMJ on the rifle range, but FMJ okay on pistol range. Again, that’s for safety, so deal with it.)
