History

Established in 1950.

Gunter Pest Management was founded in 1950 by L.R. (Reggie) Gunter. The original name of our company was L.R. Gunter, The Bugman. Reggie’s gregarious nature and excellent business skills led to steady growth throughout the 50s and 60s. In 1971, Reggie was joined by his son-​in-​law, Norman O. Besheer, an attorney who resigned from his law firm to join in the «bug business.» In 1969, Reggie’s grandson, Jay Gunter Besheer, began working summers and upon graduation from Business School at MU, joined the business, rising to President in 1990. As of 2011, Gunter serves over 65,000 pest control clients in the Greater Kansas City area. In 2007, Gunter added lawn service to their list of services and in 2010, Gunter purchased Modern Fire Safety, LLC to add fire safety services to it’s portfolio of services.

Jay Gunter Besheer began his career at Gunter as a child, by helping his grandfather, LR Gunter on weekends. Jay was very close to his grandfather and always knew that he wanted to become a «Bugman.» As he grew, he did general pest work, did termite treatments and inspections and also helped out in the office. Upon graduation from MU with a degree in business, he fulfilled his lifetime ambition by joining the family business. From his grandfather’s humble beginnings, working out of his house in Brookside, Jay helped steer Gunter on a growth pattern that has made Gunter Pest Management one of the largest pest management firms in the United States with over 65,000 clients.
