Amazing 5 star service by a super friendly owner. I had a rear glass window installed on my convertable. When it was done, the installer went over everything that had been done and what too watch out for later.
Do not let the building fool you. It is not a shining car dealerships service bay. It is way better!

I had my top on my Toyota Solara done several months ago and put off the review due to procrastination! These folks were the just the best! They went above and beyond my expectation! I would recommend them without hesitation! My top looks great! We really need more businesses with their work ethics!

I messaged Jim several months ago for a quote to get my headliner replaced for my car. He responded immediately and told me to bring it in whenever and he would get it completed the same day. We put it off and finally made time to make the drive over. My husband was primarily working with him and gave him the exact quote he gave me months ago. The new headliner looks great and my car looks a little nicer. He even fixed the dent on my rear bumper. We picked this place because of the 5 star reviews and so glad we drove further (we live much closer to Kearny Mesa) for excellent work. Thank you!

Without a doubt, this will be my go to shop for any and all upholstery and convertible top needs. From beginning to end, I got the feeling I was going to be very well taken care of. Started with a phone call to the shop a week prior to the installation to talk about different convertible top options for my 2001 Miata LS. Spoke with Jim at length about different products, vinyl vs. canvas. Jim is a very very nice guy, he took his time explaining things to me about tops, the installation process.
He provided a very very reasonable quote over the phone and within 24 hours of deciding to schedule the appointment he had the canvas top I selected delivered to his shop. I dropped off at 10am and my car was ready that same day. When I showed up at the shop I was super impressed with the outcome.
Jim and his crew are true craftsman dedicated to their specialty. They had such a wide variety of cars in their shop, from antique collector’s cars to modern Porshe’s, American muscle cars, all types. While I was in the shop I admired some custom tops they are installing on several antique cars, amazing work.
I’m so glad I chose them. I’ll never go anywhere else.

Bernie is awesome. I had an issue with my 370Z top. The dealer, Pacific Nissan said that the entire top needed to be replaced — which would cost more than $ 10k. I took it to Bernie’s right away, as something did not sound right at all. why replace the entire top, for just one issue?! Bernie checked it out FOR FREE and basically confirmed, what I thought — the dealer was full of it. it’s rare that you find someone as competent, honest and straight up cool as Bernie. Thanks very much… if I ever do have a legit issue with the top, I know where to go!

Just got my convertible top done at bernies.
He’s very honest and really knows what he’s doing. I was so afraid of going to dealer for my bmw m3 and paying a arm and a leg. Jim, who is the owner made my day. Fixed my top in 30 min. And I left with my top down.

Bernies auto upholstery is a life saver ! When my husbands car got broken into via slashed convertible top we didn’t know where to go. Geico payed for it but kept insisting that we use one of their «approved locations» to get it fixed at (most of which wouldn’t even do tops and the ones that did had horror stories on the review) so they said we could pick a place of our choosing. Thank goodness we chose bernies! Jim was so informative and through he helped us more with understanding the insurance claim more than the insurance people did ! He was very personable and an all around great guy and my husbands new top looks amazing and it was done very quickly (2 days) thanks Jim!

Simply stated, the customer service at Bernie’s is second to none-​in any industry!
Jim and the guys are craftsmen. They’re thorough, precise, honest, and the just best there is.
It’s obvious that they love what they do, and go out of their way to make sure your job is done absolutely perfectly. There aren’t a lot of guys who have the experience to replace the top on my car-​and MR2, but Jim had mentioned to me that he has been doing this kind of work for 35 years, and his experience shows! The prices are fair and reasonable, the work is done in a timely manner, and you can rest assured the work was done right. In fact, the work is so good that you almost feel guilty for not paying more.
I didn’t use a lot of! s in this review because there are SO many reviews for Bernie’s that can seem a little over the top with enthusiasm, but don’t let those fool you-Bernie’s deserves every 5 star review on Unilocal.
If you need any convertible top or upholstery work done, do yourself a favor and call Bernie’s; you’ll get outstanding work at great prices performed by the absolutely nicest guy you could ever want to meet.
This will be the best repair experience you have ever had!

Also repaired my rear quarter window, replace a seat and then did a load of extra work tidying up bits and pieces on the roof mechanism without me even asking

Same day service, helpful staff, I would recommend Bernies to anybody looking to fix their convertible top or seats. Jim was a great help and got my top (slashed from a break-​in) looking brand new again.

All i can say is WOW… I took my bmw 330ci comvertable here and let me tell you… theese guys know what they are doing. Friendly service… no bs… if you need interior or your convertable top repaired this is the place to go… hands down… the best

I had to replace a rear window in my convertible Sebring, asked for a quote in 3 different places and opted for Bernie’s. Why? Best customer service, best price and exceptional service! I’m really satisfied. They justify all these high recommendations here!

A very common problem with the Audi convertible top is the separation of the fabric at the glass. I tried many types of glue and cement with diy repairs, followed You-​tube videos etc. but none with any success. I didn’t have much confidence the top could be saved but I took it to Bernie’s anyway as a last resort.
Well, well, well. Bernie knew exactly what he was doing, did his magic and bonded the fabric back to the glass like the day it rolled off the assembly line. That was over a year ago and the repair is still flawless. Truly a pleasure to do business with him.

Top-​notch service! Jim is such an easygoing, knowledgeable guy and is very passionate about his work and it shows! I recently took my 2000 BMW Z3 to Bernie’s to have the top replaced. Living in North County, I had a few other choices available to me that were a ten minute or less drive away. However, I opted to take it to Bernie’s because of his great pricing and all of the great comments here.
All I can say is wow, wow, wow – Jim did such a great job and my car looks years newer! He completed the work in no time and he went above and beyond, doing some additional repairs at no extra charge. He also gave me some great advice on caring for my new top and my car in general. This probably had to be the best customers service I have ever received !!! Jim was honest, courtesy, and professional… I would recommend this place to the Queen of England is she needed anything done on her motorcade… They put people before profit and you can’t teach that, either you have or you don’t. When the back window was busted out of my convertible, I called several windshield repair shops until I was directed to contact an upholstery shop. The guys at Bernie’s not only knew what they were talking about, but they were also able to cut me a deal. They did an awesome job replacing my Toyota Solara convertible top and it looks great. I would highly recommend using Bernie’s Upholstery for your convertible top needs. These guys specialize in convertible tops and they are damn good at what they do!

Everything you’ve read about this place is true. Jim is a craftsman. Just make sure the project you bring him is large… If not, then he will let your project sit unfinished for many months.

This is going to be a long one. The short version is this place is AMAZING! Here’s the story.
I just bought a 2003 Mustang GT convertible where the glass had become detached from the top itself. I’ve gotten into looking at Unilocal reviews & found Bernie’s. I called up Jim & asked for an over-​the-​phone quote. He gave me one. A couple days later, I decided to bring my car down & maybe have him look at it to see for himself. He did tell me that it wasn’t repairable as originally thought & gave me a new quote. & mind you, I stopped by about 10 minutes to close but he took the time to go over everything… BEFORE me agreeing to a quote!
Now he could’ve stopped there. But he told & showed me what happened, what my options were, & even gave me a tip on saving my weatherstripping when using my top. He also gave me used/​new prices, & didn’t try to sell me on more things (he could’ve easily said the whole top needed to be done, but he said I still have a couple good years left on it).
A couple weeks later, I decided to have it done. He said if I brought it down at 9, he’d have it done same day. Unfortunately I didn’t make it until 10:30. I still had my car back, new window assembly & all just before closing. When calling to see if it was done, Jim said «drive safe. Don’t speed just to get here by close. We’re not going anywhere.»
After picking up my car, he asked a bit about me & what I do, then showed me some of the other services that he does. & nothing ever reeked of him trying to sell me on anything. He was very professional & personable at the same time.
It’s not very often that I can do business with someone & have the whole experience be above & beyond, but Bernie’s did & that’s why they’ll have a customer for life (so long as it’s not engine/transmission-related…they don’t do that).
