So we just ate here for the first time and will NEVER eat at any of these places again! First we had a hair in one of the BLT’s then we pulled a bug out of the top of the ketchup bottle. We were told that the assistant manager could not do anything and if we didn’t pay they would call the law. We were given a card to call the general manager William Venable 913−908−1523, who’s number is conveniently going to voicemail

I grew up on Winsteads. I hadn’t been in years and recently took my kids and my son’s friend there for lunch(so 2 six year olds and a 3 year old). They LOVED it. I got them all shakes, burgers & fries which is a treat for my kids. They now tell me Winsteads is their favorite restaurant. I wasn’t sure that as an adult I would be impressed with their food, but the burger was great and the onion rings were good too. I snuck a sip of the chocolate shake from my 3 year old and it was tasty. We will be back I’m sure.

This Winsteads is not the best Winsteads in town. This service is a little slow. The food is good. It is clean and they are usually friendly but not always. With all the restaurants in the area you think the staff would be friendlier. Sometimes there’s someone to seat you. Other times someone will just say from behind the counter sit anywhere someone will be with you. Eventually someone will come over and take your order. You will get your food. I’ve never had a problem with the food. It’s good, the french fries and onion rings are always crispy & hot. The burgers are always delicious. You will get a good meal here. The service is just hit or mess.

Man I’m only 20, but I grew up going here with my dad for awesome milkshakes. It seems this place is bare ¼ full most the time, and usually it’s field with senior citizens who come here to remind them of the good ol’ days, till they get their OK burgers and no longer amazing shakes. Also those prices… man $ 20+including tip for 2 people? Ridiculous, because the waitress always forgets to put half the things we ask for on there, when we get the 50⁄50(half fries half onion rings) on or the other is never cooked all the way or cooked too much. They give you a kiddy sized amount of onion rings. The staff in the back looks like a bunch of dirty guys/stoners. I haven’t talk to them so they could be gentlemen, but I’m not sure I want them handling my food. And worst of all… the shakes… I mean they still«taste» like a shake, but most of the time they aren’t even mixed all the way. And when I ask for a malt it doesn’t even taste like one… infact I think the Malt powder might be invisible –_– This place use to be fantastic. It’s really gone down hill and it sucks to think someday there won’t be a Winsteads. But then again I don’t think you can call that place much of a Winsteads anymore…

I stopped by because I needed a picture to go with my music theme for a project and they have a jukebox in the restaurant. I couldn’t just run in take some pictures and leave, so I decided to have an early lunch. I typically am not a fan of super thin burgers, but if you like your burgers that way, Winstead’s does it right. I usually stop by for breakfast if I go to Winstead’s and I love their breakfast sandwich. The breakfast combo and biscuits and gravy are also good choices. The service in the drive thru is a little slow, but they are cooking your order fresh so very much worth the wait. Not being a fan of thin burgers, I will say I do occasionally like to grab one from Winstead’s. I do have to get a double or triple so that the meat is noticeable, but they cook it well. It just misses the grease that you get with a thicker burger. Of course I love the fries. Any restaurant with thicker fries can only fail if they don’t cook them properly. Great crunch on the outside, meaty on the inside, the way fries should be! I usually get the 50⁄50 which is fries and onion rings. The rings are thick cut and delicious. I would recommend salting both the fries and rings out of the fryer unless someone requests no salt. I personally think there is a huge difference in salting later instead of straight from the fryer in taste. I have only had chocolate shakes and they are pretty good and it requires some work to get it up through the straw. A little thick, but good for dipping your fries into. The taste is spot on and a great compliment to a burger and fries. This particular location is pretty clean, but the interior is starting to show it’s years and some new ceiling tiles, paint, carpet, etc, could really pep up the interior. I generally go through the drive thru when I visit any Winstead’s and always get such friendly service. Dining in was exactly the same. The waitress I had seemed to be just as much a part of Winstead’s as the burgers. Customers were hugging her as they left, stopping and having conversations as they were leaving, and obviously knew her from coming in. Her service and the relationships she has with her customers gives the restaurant a real small town diner feel. Huge plus in my book!

After moving to Kansas City and hearing amazing reviews for Winsteads I decided to give it a try. Went in around 1:00 on a Saturday and weren’t able to get any service at all. Sat in the booth for 15 minutes making small talk. After walking up to the counter to ask for someone to help us out, even just get us started with waters we were told that they would be with us shortly. 10 minutes later we decided to go somewhere else, because unfortunately the staff wasn’t interested in helping us out at this location. I will give it another chance eventually, the first visit wasn’t what I imagined a local landmark to be. Obviously they are doing something right if they have been around since the 40’s, so I will try again later.

Not too shabby. I have been living in KC for about six months and have driven by several Winsteads. Each time I drive by I think, «Self. You should probably check that place out. Since they are everywhere.» I have heard on several occasions from people that they used to go there all the time as a child. Well — I went through the drive thru(the Lenexa location has sort of an awkward drive-thru) — ordered a single steak burger and fries — not too shabby. The steak burger reminded me of old Wendy’s hamburgers — I actually preferred Wendy’s hamburgers back in the day when they were all thin. The taste was pretty divine. The fries… not so much. They weren’t cooked all the way and were pretty standard. But I did like that they didn’t salt them and left that on the side for you to decide. I will have to go back and try their grilled cheese or chicken sandwich. I didn’t try any shakes or malts — I will have to do that too. I’m definitely returning there — had a really good vibe about the place. Two thumbs up. Oh. And the price is SUPER right. Five bucks for a hamburger and fries — stellar.

Very good hamburgers! Still, it just doesn’t seem the same as the old Winstead’s on the plaza. Shakes are fantastic especially the chocolate shake you eat with a spoon.

Winstead’s has been around forever, so it doesn’t have to work for the retro-chic vibe; it comes by it honestly. It’s a decent date-night spot. Burgers, onion rings & fries are all yummy, but the portion sizes are a tad small for what they charge. I ordered my burger with mayo, but it came with a dollop of supiciously sweet goo that I think was actually Miracle Whip(ew, can’t stand MW.) The malts are expensive but HUGE, you can easily split one with your date & everyone will be happy. Parking is pretty easy at the Lenexa location as well.

Every once in awhile, you need a good old-fashioned burger. Winsteads is KC’s answer for that and has been since 1940. This place has a nice little vibe about it. The staff was a bit quirky but no doubt cool. Very friendly and willing to make your day a little brighter with a smile or an attempt to get you anything you might need. The burger isn’t the finest in the world but it does remind you of simpler times and that friends is a good thing. P. S. Get a chocolate malt or as some like to say, frosty. It’ll bring happiness to your tummy.
