History

Established in 1937.

Dr. Harold E Stauffer and his wife «Peg» were born in 1910. He started practicing medicine in Leola in 1937, in his home, and was a beloved country doctor. Later, when his son-​in-​law, Dr. Richard Niemeyer joined him, they out-​grew the office in his home next door.



Together they built Leola Family Health Center in 1977. Dr. Stauffer saw patients until 1995, when he was 85 years of age. His granddaughter, Laura DeBruin, daughter of Jean and Rich Niemeyer, is now a practicing Physician Assistant in the office.

My patients and I often had a good laugh together and really became like part of the family. I enjoyed taking my children along on house calls in those days and they were always welcome.»
