Handyman Matters of Greater Boston

This company is horrible. We hired them because our tenant’s kitchen cabinet door fell off and hit him in the jaw. We hired them to re-​attach all the doors. They didn’t do the job correctly, then charged us for 12 hours in 1 day! (great scam-​advertise a low rate, then charge the client for 12 hours). We weren’t on site — I am SURE they weren’t there for 12 hours! Never hire these people.

We had some water damage on the ceiling of our porch. I saw all the great reviews, and called to have them come out and take a look to get a quote. They said since it was outside, I didn’t have to be there (read not have to take off work) when they took a look. They said they would email me the quote. Three days passed, I called to ask when I would get the quote, they said they were busy but by the end of the weekend. 1 week passed, I called again, she said they were busy, but would remind Bob to send it out. It has been 4 weeks, I’ve given up any hope, I don’t even know if they ever came out. No sense of responsibility or accountability. Not a professional company at all

Terrible. Had them retile my bathroom and install new vanity and fixtures. There were no major hiccups with the project that should have resulted in them going over time/​budget, however, the project took twice as long as Bob (owner) anticipated. The final product was not very good and I needed to hire my own plumber because they didn’t have a plumber on staff who knew how to install my sink fixtures.
I ended up paying more than the estimate (but not as much as Bob tried to bill me for). The worker who performed most of the project was a nice guy, but was very frustrated with his work and told me that the Bob always underestimates projects and encourages him to rush through the work… Highly unethical. And the result is overpriced, shoddy work. I would never use handyman matters again.

Well in defense of Handyman matters… ironically I also had a problem with another company and paint peeling on old ceilings. They didn’t call me back at all. So that isn’t all that uncommon. Later I had several people out to *fix* the problem and I could tell immediately they didn’t know how to, although they claimed they did. The ceilings still aren’t fixed because we can’t find anyone who really seems to know what they are doing with older ceilings.
That said, I never thought of them for such complex job. I have used Handyman matters for two small, Handyman type jobs. First, re caulking my tub and second, putting up a fireplace mantel that had been pre-​ordered from a manufacturer. Both jobs I could have done myself and I only didn’t do because I didn’t have the tools. Both were done well. In fact, I asked the handyman that came out to clean the bathtub up a little (meaning after the re-​caulk) and he cleaned the tub too.
But the rates are cheap $ 155 for an hour and ½. And as long as the job you want is not overly complex… they can do it. Just don’t ask them to do a job that is overly complex because they will say they can do it and try to figure it out later.

I have been extremely disappointed with Handyman Matters. They did extensive work in my house a few months ago — including painting all my ceilings in an older house. Despite the expensive price, we chose them because they talked a good talk about understanding older houses, dazzling us with their know-​how: «I bet no one has discussed the fact you may have old style ceilings that will peel with typical paint.» We thought we were doing the right thing by going with a local company…
Well, as it came to pass, they actually painted my old style ceilings (calemite ceilings) with regular paint and within 1 week the ceiling started to peel. We called them to patch the area — which they did a really junky job doing (the paint doesn’t match and is shiny). Now ALL my ceilings are peeling– a few months later.
Bob Samson, the manager listed on the site doesn’t return my emails and clearly won’t honor the work effort. For over $ 70.00/hour one should hope to get better craftsmanship and guarantees than this.
I write this review to help other people understand more about this company and hopefully choose a Handyman that can deliver.
