Salon Red

I really wanted to like this place as the location is convenient for me. Got a mani/​pedi and hair cut with color. The place is a bit cluttered. While overall, it doesn’t feel unsanitary and they appear conscientious about keeping equipment and tools clean, it needs a thorough cleaning so it presents better. Clumps of hair clippings and dust in the corners are one thing that could be cleaned up.
As for the mani/​pedi… The owner, Ginny (sp?) set me up in an uncomfortable chair with one of those strap on massage seats. Then she pulled out the cheap-​o Homedics foot bath. I was a little taken aback by this because it felt like something I would set up at home trying to emulate a spa. So, to have this done at a salon felt like the owner was taking the cheap way out. The mani/​pedi came out looking top-​notch, but the mani only lasted 4 days before the polish started peeling off. Pedi is holding up a little better, but doubt it will last more than 10 days without peeling.
As for hair… I asked for color to match what I had and a trim that maintained my current style. The color came out darker than I asked for and my shirt got stained as Ginny let water run down my back when she was washing out the color. The cut is unmanageable and only vaguely resembles my previous style. I new something was wrong when she finished blow drying it straight and my ends were curling up. The layers she added are irregular at best and I can’t wear it straight. I’m not at all picky about my hair, but if the stylist can’t blow it straight, isn’t that a tell tale sign of a bad cut?
I wish them well, but won’t be going back.

One of the worst haircuts I’ve ever had in my entire life with the added bonus that it took forever to grow out enough for me to get it fixed up somewhere else. Also even though there was nobody else in salon wasn’t even offered a cup of coffee or water and no mention was made of the free scalp massage/​moroccan oil treatment the outside sign was advertising (noticed when I was already outside and leaving).Both salon décor and website are mindbogglingly horrible. I’d rather cut my own hair than go again.

My second haircut here wasn’t as great as the first. The style was too short and blunt, not really what I was looking for. And there may have been an incident with my ear and the scissors.
This place isn’t bad but just not for me. I’d still go in just for the head massage.

I am not one to normally write reviews on Unilocal.However, I do come to this website often to get feedback on various businesses. Also, being a business owner myself, Unilocal has been great to gather feedback to make improvements or give reassurance that we are doing something right. Therefore, I felt that I should return the favor and write a review for Salon Red. I know they are still considered a new business (4 years) and in this economy, we need all the help we can get!
With that, here is my story. I used to work at a hair salon on Newbury Street so I have been getting my haircuts (and color) done by the same person for years. It just so happens that my stylist in on maternity leave and my hair was BEYOND in need of a cut. I had let all the layers grow out and I would always insist «don’t take more than ½ inch!» to my stylist. Therefore, my hair was starting to resemble a dry and fried version of a 70’s hippie. No offense to any flower children out there but it was not flattering on me.
I took advantage of their buywithme special which was a haircut, morrocan oil treatment, and a blow dry. Making my appointment was not too difficult and the person I spoke to was very pleasant. (they have a really nice website too by the way!) My one suggestion would be that they do reminder calls as I was unsure of my exact appointment time and had to call that morning to double check. I arrived for my appointment on time and was warmly greeted by Marie. (or was it Maria? sorry!) She consulted with me and I warned her that I don’t really like getting my haircut but I was going to trust her and allow her to take up to 1 ½ inches off if necessary and she was free to add layers back in etc. Shampoo could have been a little more relaxing (ahh water in my eye!) but not a big deal. She took what seemed like a really long time cutting my hair and I have to admit, I started to get nervous. I did also enjoy the morrocan oil treatment which is done after the haircut while the hair is still wet. She did a fabulous blow dry and made sure I was happy with the results. I was! She obviously took her time because she wanted to get the job done right and in retrospect, I appreciated the time and effort.
As a side note, the owner (Ginny or Jenny, sorry!) came over and said hello which I thought was nice. I was offered a beverage and we had a nice conversation.
The atmosphere itself was not completely my style shall we say but if you are looking for a professional stylist and a great haircut, who cares about all the other stuff? At the end of the day, you want to look and feel beautiful. Marie delivered. :)
